My experience 5 weeks after Haemorrhoidectomy

Posted , 172 users are following.

After 5 weeks of doing the operation and especially after passing through some really horrible times of pain and misery I promised myself that I owe it to everybody out there to share my experience so that you can derive benefit out of it. I had suffered from haemorrhoids for 20+ years and it is only because I became severely anaemic due to blood loss from passing stools that I was forced to do the operation. With hindsight I could have avoided 20 years of misery, of lost sports, of severe discomfort in cars and planes by taking the plunge and doing it earlier.

First and foremost, Haemorrhoidectomy is a very common operation and albeit there is a very small percentage where things get complicated the cases are getting less and less each year. I'm saying this because each and every person that does this operation will pass through so much pain that instinctively he or she will think that they are one of the few that is unlucky.

Secondly the pain WILL PASS!

I repeat it WILL PASS!

The absolutely horrible, can't take it anymore, about to throw up, about to faint, never going to be the same, never going to be happy, stuffiness, bloated feeling, blade cutting through your backside pain WILL PASS!

Realistically a person who does this operation will experience two annoying factors namely pain and discomfort. In the first few days the pain is so bad that you cannot think of anything else including the discomfort. After that the pain between going to the bathroom will slowly subside but the discomfort will increase primarily due to constipation. Hereunder please find my tips and what I would do differently if I could go back in time.

1.   Increase your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables and water weeks before the operation to soften your stools and prepare your body for a life change. This diet change is a must EVEN AFTER the operation unless you’re a masochist and want to pass through it again.

2.   Cut out anything that might make you constipated – research. This includes alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, refined foods etc.

3.   Do a fresh water enema the day before the operation.

4.   Do a list of all the things you missed out on because of your condition and promise yourself to enjoy life more after the operation and to take care more of your physical well being.

5.   Mentally prepare that you are going to be in severe pain but also be aware that this is only temporary and that you’ll be tons better after that and the effort would have been worth it. Incidentally I was in excruciating pain for about 5 days, in agonising pain 5 days after that and in manageable pain 5 days after that. By the end of the second week I was 60% better. By the end of the fourth week I was 90% better with only the annoying leakage to take care of. By the end of the fifth week I’m 95% there.

6.   Try and limit pain killer as much as possible as they will slow your digestive system and the resulting constipation is worse than the pain.

7.   The feeling of still feeling massive haemorrhoids after the operation is normal. This is due to the swelling. The importance of having formed stools that are SOFT is important. Underline formed not diarrhoea as you need your system to re-function even if it means a little more pain.

8.   The feeling of passing sharp blades during the first few days is unavoidable. This mixed with blood and excrement is not a pretty felling or site but I PROMISE YOU it will get better.

9.   Keep the are dry otherwise you’ll develop sever rash – been there done that – more pain to avoid.

10.                 Keep moving. The more you move the better your digestive system works, the less laxatives, the less bloated feeling, the happier you will be.

11.                 Be prepared to go the bathroom at a moments notice.

12.                 Run a warm sitz bath often – it does wonders to sooth the pain

13.                 Squat not sit to pass stools. It’s easier to excrete, less painful and quicker. I’m still squatting and there is no way I’m going back to sitting. Before I sometime spent between 30 – 45 min on the loo. Now I’m in an out in 3 minutes.

14.                 Keep the area clean. Use a bidet, shower or whatever you want. Use only toilet paper to pat dry the excess water. Again with hindsight this should be norm. After all if you covered you hand in excrement you wouldn’t simply wipe it off with toilet paper but you’d wash the hell out of it.

15.                 Drink lots of water and take a reasonable amount of fibre. Taking fibre without water is a recipe for disaster.

16.                 You are going to have to live with sanitary pads for a few weeks until the area heals sufficiently. It will get gradually better. I have gained a new respect for women who have to wear these things once a month; very annoying.

17.                 After you recover promise yourself to share your positive experience and the things that worked out for you on a blog for the benefit of others. It’s kind of a chain get better advice blog.

18.                 Most important of all – KEEP POSITIVE and take care of your health. You only have one body.

wow what a great post! totally agree with everything you have said. The pain initially is miserable, I have been on my hands and knees on my kitchen floor with ice pack pressed to my backside, crying, however, what is the alternative ? Let the prolapse take over your life? I am on day 9 after my op, it was a serious grade 4 prolapse and haemaroidectomy, liquid food, soups, juice, water, pain relief - its helpful to stay on top of it, keep a daily record in a pad so you know what you have had and what you can safely have,  I found having a commode in my bedroom, with books and my lap top near by, and a bowl of cool water to dip my bottom in, with towels et c... helped allot, a quiet private place to grimace and swear! and take your mind off by surfing the net. Its a huge thing, give yourself time to sleep, pad your bed up with towels/ news papers/ pads/wipes, everything you can think of, I got on well recently with dulcoease, and lots of brothy soups, and also using my fingers to carefully hold the area around the anus when trying to pass a stool, followed by using iodine or tcp to disinfect the wound. Ahh life is so glamerous

    Pre-surgery day:

Headed in tomorrow for a full hemorrhoidectomy! Can't wait! LOL! Been managing these since I was a teenager and after giving birth to 3 kids it became less manageable. I've done everything I can up to this point other than having surgery. I've had internal ones banded 4 times. I've tried infrared treatments to shrink the external ones but at this point there is no other way to get rid of them. I have managed them by watching my diet, adding fiber and buying a bidet which has been super helpful, but it's literally a constant pain in the ass. Either just a little annoyance or, when I have a serious BM or series of them in a day, bleeding, burning and sleepless nights. so I've decided to go for it. My doctor has been very clear on the length of time for recuperation and the extent of pain. I will be having this done in a surgical center which I like so much better than going to a hospital. Preparing for a liquid diet for at least a week. One perk from that perspective is the weight loss that is expected! Two Thumbs up!! I am looking forward to having this "behind" me once and for all!  Mentally, I am as ready as I can be I've been reading WAY to much about other people's situations and know that it is no walk in the park! The way I look at it is that I'm already having a lot of pain and uncomfortability with no end in sight so I figure that by the new year I'll be in a much better place. Trying to stay positive and am thankful to have a forum like this where there are others in similar situations who have shared tips I can use!

      Good luck to you.

I had this issue for over 20 yrs n with colon cancer n chrones in my family i needed to get them under control. Will i cant say i am not regretting it because I most certainly am. The surgeon had told me that this surgery is less invasive as in the past. How so! That I was not so sure of.

Like u i had internal n external roids.. Put up with a lot of leakage and bleeding minus the pain over the years. I am now three days short of 30 days post op..

Have not been able to go back to work yet.. The healing process is lengthy and painful.. Yes be prepared i certainly was not.

Dr said id have a week down time.. Well its a lot longer then one week.. I hope to wake up tomorrow and be back to my mormal self ... I can only pray.

Its the after math of the bm that seems to set me back. This pain last for hours.. I don't have issues going. its the stinging burning aching pain I cant deal with.. I tried to go out shopping n half hour later have to go home and apply ice.. Standing waking sitting all are bothersome.. I need my life back..

I really hope you heal faster then most of us.. Keep us posted on how you make out..

      Thx n good luck.

My doctor actually talked me out of it last year when I wanted to have the surgery. He told me how painful it would be and that at a minimum I'd be out of work for 2 weeks maybe even 4.  So sorry you are still having a tough time. Praying you get some relief soon!

ouch, good luck, how are you? I thought childbirth was bad, I am on the mend, still taking stool softners and laxatives, still find food a drama, I enjoy eating it, however know the repercussions, I am not having as many accidents anymore, and have been able to stop taking pain meds so thats good.

I am starting to feel much better now. Yesterday and today I’ve felt more like myself. The first week was prettt bad physically and emotionally. Glad to have gotten through it as it was one of the most difficult to have gone through. Seeing light at the end of the tunnel and actually think I will be going back to work on Monday which will be a day shy of two weeks! Follow up with my doc tomorrow but think I am healing nicely.

      How are you feeling?

I know it’s quite old now, but thank you for your original post. I’m now one day 5 post Haemorroidectomy and Anal Skin Tag removal following a traumatic birth and wowzers. It’s like Birth all over again. Every day.

I am literally hanging on your word that this will pass and one day I won’t feel like a freight train of razor blades is shooting through me several times a day!

oo the razor blade things is so awful, after 3 weeks I dont have them anymore, did allot of crying and drastic undignified things to try to help the pain, what I found did help was getting some ky or vaseline and gently inserting it with a cotton bud and gently circuling it around, also when in the bath gently prying open the anus,

We all heal differently. No matter whether healthy or not.

      Im on my 8th week.

Yes its been hell and I've been able to go back to work or have a normal life since Oct 10.

This morning i feel good but i have yet to have my morning bm..

But Im so hoping this is a turn of good days ahead as yesterday was still a very painful day for me as i still have to take one pain pill after morning bm..

I try to hold off taking the pill for as long as i can stand it.. But eventually i give in as this god forsaken pain keeps me in bed.

I want my life back like yesterday..

Hope it gets better for you.

I know it will and I've seen threads where ppl are still healing in their 12th month..

      Try to keep positive.

Did you experience any trouble urinating? It's been 4 days since my surgery & I can't urinate on demand. I am going, but not as often as I feel I should drinking the amount of water I do.

      Tommy,

For frost 3-5 days you will feel trouble urinating, as you cannot pressure while urinating.

My Dr suggested to have tea. Which is diuretic as well and it really help me.

I experienced the same myself. I had to go into the shower and place the shower head over my lower belly with running warm water. It worked wonders. Now I'm worried because I'm one week post op and I can see a lump where the hemorroid used to be. I guess it's just swell from the surgery but it's driving me crazy. If it weren't for that, I'm sure I'd feel much better.

It will go away, I was definetly freaking out when that happened, I felt soo defeated, but after a few weeks it all went down, I'm 7 or 8 months post OP and I'm 98 percent back to normal, I dealt with leakage for awhile but its finally going away after alot of kegal exercises. Keep eating healthy, fiber fiber fiber, and lots of water, make water ur new obsession, it's the best thing u can intake to make sure u poop right, lol, limit ur carbs too, that makes poop bricks that hurt, u want smooth fibery poop, good luck and I'll be praying for you!
