My experience 5 weeks after Haemorrhoidectomy

Posted , 172 users are following.

After 5 weeks of doing the operation and especially after passing through some really horrible times of pain and misery I promised myself that I owe it to everybody out there to share my experience so that you can derive benefit out of it. I had suffered from haemorrhoids for 20+ years and it is only because I became severely anaemic due to blood loss from passing stools that I was forced to do the operation. With hindsight I could have avoided 20 years of misery, of lost sports, of severe discomfort in cars and planes by taking the plunge and doing it earlier.

First and foremost, Haemorrhoidectomy is a very common operation and albeit there is a very small percentage where things get complicated the cases are getting less and less each year. I'm saying this because each and every person that does this operation will pass through so much pain that instinctively he or she will think that they are one of the few that is unlucky.

Secondly the pain WILL PASS!

I repeat it WILL PASS!

The absolutely horrible, can't take it anymore, about to throw up, about to faint, never going to be the same, never going to be happy, stuffiness, bloated feeling, blade cutting through your backside pain WILL PASS!

Realistically a person who does this operation will experience two annoying factors namely pain and discomfort. In the first few days the pain is so bad that you cannot think of anything else including the discomfort. After that the pain between going to the bathroom will slowly subside but the discomfort will increase primarily due to constipation. Hereunder please find my tips and what I would do differently if I could go back in time.

1.   Increase your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables and water weeks before the operation to soften your stools and prepare your body for a life change. This diet change is a must EVEN AFTER the operation unless you’re a masochist and want to pass through it again.

2.   Cut out anything that might make you constipated – research. This includes alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, refined foods etc.

3.   Do a fresh water enema the day before the operation.

4.   Do a list of all the things you missed out on because of your condition and promise yourself to enjoy life more after the operation and to take care more of your physical well being.

5.   Mentally prepare that you are going to be in severe pain but also be aware that this is only temporary and that you’ll be tons better after that and the effort would have been worth it. Incidentally I was in excruciating pain for about 5 days, in agonising pain 5 days after that and in manageable pain 5 days after that. By the end of the second week I was 60% better. By the end of the fourth week I was 90% better with only the annoying leakage to take care of. By the end of the fifth week I’m 95% there.

6.   Try and limit pain killer as much as possible as they will slow your digestive system and the resulting constipation is worse than the pain.

7.   The feeling of still feeling massive haemorrhoids after the operation is normal. This is due to the swelling. The importance of having formed stools that are SOFT is important. Underline formed not diarrhoea as you need your system to re-function even if it means a little more pain.

8.   The feeling of passing sharp blades during the first few days is unavoidable. This mixed with blood and excrement is not a pretty felling or site but I PROMISE YOU it will get better.

9.   Keep the are dry otherwise you’ll develop sever rash – been there done that – more pain to avoid.

10.                 Keep moving. The more you move the better your digestive system works, the less laxatives, the less bloated feeling, the happier you will be.

11.                 Be prepared to go the bathroom at a moments notice.

12.                 Run a warm sitz bath often – it does wonders to sooth the pain

13.                 Squat not sit to pass stools. It’s easier to excrete, less painful and quicker. I’m still squatting and there is no way I’m going back to sitting. Before I sometime spent between 30 – 45 min on the loo. Now I’m in an out in 3 minutes.

14.                 Keep the area clean. Use a bidet, shower or whatever you want. Use only toilet paper to pat dry the excess water. Again with hindsight this should be norm. After all if you covered you hand in excrement you wouldn’t simply wipe it off with toilet paper but you’d wash the hell out of it.

15.                 Drink lots of water and take a reasonable amount of fibre. Taking fibre without water is a recipe for disaster.

16.                 You are going to have to live with sanitary pads for a few weeks until the area heals sufficiently. It will get gradually better. I have gained a new respect for women who have to wear these things once a month; very annoying.

17.                 After you recover promise yourself to share your positive experience and the things that worked out for you on a blog for the benefit of others. It’s kind of a chain get better advice blog.

18.                 Most important of all – KEEP POSITIVE and take care of your health. You only have one body.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for making me feel normal and helping me see a way forward, 1 week post op.

My doctor said to me "it will be at least two weeks recovery" and I chose to hear 'a couple of weeks and you will be fine'. I smugley thought, I'll be ok in a week. I am now focused on week 5 and I hope it will have been worth it.

Thank you for reminding me that this will get better. I am on day 6 and can't I could heal after having BMs that are so painful. My body needs rest down there but I need to poop every day and it will not get the rest it needs. How can I possibly heal if I keep putting so much pressure on the wound area. I spasm on the sitz bath and need to go immediately. So far have not had great formed BM even though I have been eating correctly. I guess I just have to be patient. I feel good hours after I am done with all the BMs and feeling just a little bit throbbing ,but each day I feel like I'm going backwards once I poop again. When will it get easier to pass stool so I can get back to living. I know. One day. How are you two years later?

      Hi Nancy

I'm going through what you have described

Multiple bm a day. How will I heal if the wounds keep opening.

Please tell me if ur better???  I need hope...

Yes I healed in 2 months. Slower than most I think. I have other issues besides hemmoroids. I have incomplete defication disorder that forces me to push all the time since all bm not getting out. I now am search of an answer to this problem. It will heal though. Just a long process.

    Hi Glen,

I have a prolasped hemorrhoid also that swells with each BM and I usually have to lay face down and push it back in and lay there for a good 15-20 mins before I can get up. If I get up too quick, it just slides back out and I have to repeat the process. This is ruining my life. I should have got help sooner. I'm 34. I am waiting for surgery and it needs to happen quick. What did you do to relieve the swelling throughout the day? I find usually by mid afternoon, it slides back out again on it's own and stays swollen until I can get home and lay back down. NOT exactly how I want to live my life. Standing is uncomfortable, sitting is much better for me but still not great. I need help quick.

Thank you for sharing your story. Going on 5 days now after op. I felt like I am going to die trying to take a dump. I know everyone here knows the feeling. It's trying to explain my feelings to other people who haven't been in this situation the level of pain that I am in. I even changed my diet to a liquid just to try to avoid the pain. I know this will be over soon and reading stories like yours and everyone helps. Thank you!

Thanks Glen for sharing your recommendations. To everyone who has posted on this site it's provided some relief that I am not the only one going through this.

It's been 6 weeks now and i still have yellow/green mucus and no more than a drop of blood after my BM followed by dull pain most of the time.

At 5 weeks I sought a second opinion on recovery times which was 1 - 2 months. I had my surgery done in the Middle East Kuwait and my second opinion informed my my recovery is slow because of infection (yellow mucus plus tiny amont of blood) and his solution was to give me antibiotics.

I am normally bad with antibiotics so have resisted. Has anyone else been advised to take antibiotics because of the mucus?

      Hi,

I have the leakage, as seems common with everyone. On my first visit with the Dr, he said that the discharge was due to the wound becoming septic. He went on to prescribe antobiotics. These really helped for the five days of the prescription, the discharge had all but vanished: only appearing after a BM.

It's now 28 days since the operation, and the yellow discharge has since returned (though not as severe as before the antibiotics) especially after BMs.

I'm really confused as to whether the discharge is part of the healing, or if it's caused by sepsis.

has anyone else experience problems peeing after surgery?

I just has my surgery yesterday and since late last night, felt like I had to pee but almost nothing comes out. So I drank more water to help it along but now I just have the urge to pee and my bladder is so full but nothing comes out. I can get a few drops here and there but not the relief I was hoping for. All through the night I've felt like I'm holding in my pee and it's very uncomfortable.

Urinary retention is normal after the operation. Personally I had to pee through a catheter tube for the first night.

Thank you for your post. One week post-op today and was feeling a little disheartened by the slow and painful healing process. Read your post and feel hopeful again.

It will be 2 weeks on Mon since my Op. Up until yesterday I was very much regretting having it but bms are moving better and the pain is still pretty bad but i think im getting used to it. I was just wandering when you were finally able to sit again?

Hi Barbara. I am at seven weeks right now and still have an open lesion on the outside of my bum. It still is painful to go to take a BM and sitting is much better. I was sitting on cushions till about week five. Now I can sit on regular seats. I too want to know when I will feel my old self. I would like to ride a bike and I have a horse that just gets pet. This is a very long recuperation. And hopefully it will be done soon for me. We do get used to the level of pain were at and mine is probably a 2 or 3 on a scale of 1 to 10. 10 the first 10 days and 8 till t 3 weeks for me. So I've come along way and hopefully near the end and all we go back to normal for me. Any other questions let me know. Don't forget the sitz bath is your friend are use it at times to take a BM and it much more soothing that way. Good luck.

Have you had problems having a BM into your further weeks of healing? LIke have you felt constipated even though you know you ate lots of fiber, drank lots of water, etc. I'm having that issue for about a week now. Some days I have the strong urge to go but nothing is coming out but the urge is so strong so I keep going back and forth to the toilet. I've had to push hard at some points to relieve myself and that worried me.

I have same sensations. I always went in warm to hot sitz bath to do bm(dumping into toilet and refilling to do more) it hurts less and stimulates. I take a break and go for a 10 min walk with my dog to come back and repeat. I was taking 3 fiber pills and 2 softners 3 times a day for first few weeks. I went so much so cut it back. I then took 500 mg magnesium 2 x day and 2 fiber pills. I regulated my intake by how my 💩 Came out. I also did an enema once of twice when I really felt stuck. Any of this advice that I have here can be tried part or none. Up to u.

I had pain for a couple months and sitz bath helped. Also cold compress. Did your doctor tell u that u r all healed yet? Took my a long time cause I have a dysfunctional defecation disorder which causes me to strain. I now am going for biofeedback for pelvic floor issues. I have a fissure that causes pain as well. I am not a happy camper at all. The hemmoroidectemy did not clear up my bowel issues. Hope u have better luck.

Gawddd not what i wanted to hear.. Well Dr never mentioned that i was healing. Just was happy to know there was no infection. I don't have a tub so i use the hand held shower head. Cold water helps somewhat after bm. Im really upset that Dr gave me false hope in recovery time. This is the first time in 7yrs ive missed a day of work. Let alone 4 weeks now.. Not happy! I may go back but will have to work on perks as i cant do it any other way until this pain is gone.. Really not looking forward to this.

It is a recovery that my doctors said it's a very long recovery. I have others who didn't explain the extent of this pain. The blogs have helped. Buy a sitz bath that u fill with water and set over toilet. I used to go bm directly in it for 5 weeks after surgery. It helped keep it stinging. Dump the contents as u finish. Then full with warm to hot water and sit on it for 15 minutes after bm. Sometimes a finish up with a cold filled sitz bath for 5 or 10 minutes. That helps. Call your doctor and share your concerns. I would like to help u best I can. I feel for u. Nancy
