My experience of coming off sertraline

I have found this site very helpful during the period that I was taking sertraline and felt I should share my experiences of coming off the drug, in the hope that they may be of help to others.
I was diagnosed with depression last year and have been on 200mg of sertraline for approx 10 months. I also had some therapy during this period and recently took the decision (with my doctor's support) to come off the medication. Wary of repeating the experiences some other posters on this site have had I resolved to reduce my dosage gradually over a period of about a month (more gradually than suggested by my doctor).
Each week I reduced the dosage by 50mg a day. So week one I went down to 150mg a day, week 2 100mg a day etc. The first two weeks were fine with no real changes. By the end of week 3 I began to feel a bit light headed, with hot sweats and dry-mouth also returning. As a result I remained on this dose another week instead of stopping altogether in week 4.
I have now been 5 days with no sertraline and have found the experience of quitting surprisingly easy. I still feel a little light-headed now and again, but other side effects I suffered during the full dose (yawning, tiredness, sexual dysfunction) have all but gone, and although I kind of miss the 'wrapped in cotton wool' feeling I am glad to be back to life without medication.
For what its worth I would suggest that gradual reduction of dosage is the most effective way to avoid the worse of the side-effects experienced when coming off sertraline and that the good news (for me anyway) has been the speed at which the side-effects disappeared.

I've been on setraline 200mg for 2 yrs my doc has gradually been cut down and now I am on none. Side affects are terrible I'm so dizzy it's unreal. These zaps I get in my head are constant. Having crazy dreams feel sick and being sick.finally over the first week. My wee girl has heard my voice so much over last few days. I'm sick of listening to myself moan how I feel. Can't wait to get over these feelings .

Once weaned off day after I started L-Tyronsine & 5-HTP. You can't take one without the other. I am still researching other natural happy positive mind support stuff 5-HTP claims positive mood support & promotes relaxation & sleep.... whilst weaning I refused sleeping tablets & diazepam... I climbed the walls at night times. Now I sleep all thru

I had been taking Zoloft for about 6 years and finally decided it was time to try & stop. I have been off of it for about a month & a half now.
I still get the zaps every once in a while, but lately I have been feeling sad & sometimes even emotionless. I know my body & brain are still adjusting to being off the medicine. Any tips on helping to adjust being off the meds?
Also, my sex drive has not come back. Anything to help with that too?

Do you have any interests that you could use as a distraction?
I found that doing stuff gives me a sense of satisfaction that may help raise endorphin levels.
Maybe owning a dog could be good if you are able to have one. Good for companionship, meeting other dog owners and a means of getting some gentle exercise.
Sex drive? Is there a female version of viagra?
My Dr gave me viagra but I've actually not used it.
Best wishes.

Hi.
I have been on 50mg of Sertraline for a year after experiencing some issues following the death of my sister.
I recently went on a working trip to Asia and had made the decision to get off this afterwards as I had been feeling well and stable for some while previously.
My doctor suggested doing this over a month, taking a half tablet, approx 25mg a day for 2 weeks, then this dose on alternate days for the same period.
Today, after going on the last leg of this withdrawal a few days ago I woke to my alarm but felt like sh!t. Vague, tired, headaches but tired mostly. I took a day holiday and got on with a personal project.
Reading the experiences of others on this gives me reassurance that this is fairly normal.
The biggest problem I face as a beer lover is not having a good reason to stay "on the wagon" which I have done to give the treatment it's best chance of being effective.😐.
Good luck to all going through this process.

I am now 10 days since my last dose. I was originally on 50mg. I reduced by taking half a tablet every day for 2 week, then the same dose on alternate days for another 2 weeks, then stop. I experienced the dry mouth thing but that was all.
The patient on 200mg might benefit by getting the dose in 50mg form and going down in smaller (approx 25mg) steps to feel less noticeable side effects.
Good luck

Well done. Slowly coming off is the best way for sure.
I am in hospital as I type but because of a burst appendix.

Slowly tapering off has been hard! There's days I want to give up but reading these positive comments has really helped. I've been on antidepressants for 10 years. Sucks. I know I have to stay positive and FOCUS on the outcome.

Depends on too many different factors but my investigations, I’m giving myself 8 weeks and if still have varying symptoms after that I will resign myself to the fact it’s not time for me and go back on them.

Week 4/5 of withdrawal from 100mg setraline (which I was on for about 4 years).
Basically for about a month I was only randomly taking them as would forget and also I am at the point to try and come off them AGAIN anyway. Tried about a year ago and my moods etc were terrible so I went back on them (all done without doctors knowledge).
So after taking them randomly for at least a month I thought right let’s give this a go. So I am about week 4 or 5 of no pills on top of the month random taking.
First couple of weeks were fine, I’ve had a very irritating cough for the whole time and twice been randomly sick (actual rushing to the toilet to vomit then carry as on as normal) but there are lots of bugs going around at the moment so I don’t know if it’s that causing this.
About a week ago my skin started coming out very dry with blotches on my face, especially just under my eyes. But the worst symptom is my “irritability/anger flare ups” I have two young children and they have got the brunt of it - please don’t make me feel any worse than I do about that - they are my world and we have a loving home so I’ll sort that out!
My tolerance can be zero and arghhhhhh angry but I hope I’m through most of the worst symptoms now and going to peruse this for another month and hopefully be rid of SSRIs for good. I’ve always been over weight so in comparing other people’s symptoms I can comment about weight gain or loss. I am prone to migraines but touch wood have not had a headache during this whole withdrawal period.
Over the last year I have had numerous attacks of vertigo which was investigated and specialist said this was a virus but who knows maybe it was taking SSRI?
i just felt I needed to put my experience on here and hopefully others can benefit from it. For some silly reason I hadn’t expected too much coming off the tablets but boy was that a reality check but after reading others experience it’s given me the motivation and encouragement to keep going and if in another month I still feel these anger bursts I’ll speak to my Doctor and end up back on them ...........watch this space!
I hope I come back in around a month and let you know how it’s going but I’ll be honest it’s not been as easy as I thought it would be but fingers cross3d it works out well - only time will tell.
Thanks and and good luck everyone x
