My experience of huge complex ovarian cyst

More of a story than a question in case it helps some of you get through the scary waiting time. I know that it is really hard as if you have this problem you will be looking for information and realising at the same time that your situation is only yours. I am telling you so that you can hope for a good outcome rather than expect the worst.

I am 50 years old and was still having regular periods.

I noticed my tummy looking a bit humpy on the right side about 3 months ago. I pushed the lump and the hump moved to the left. Trapped wind moving I thought. However it started getting bigger and when I tapped it sounded like a watery whump. It grew up and over to the middle so I looked pregnant. My insides gurgled, I was constipated and had bad backache every morning. My whole back was sore andI felt a bit out of breath. It got better when I stood up.

I could not get an appointment with my GP. Rang many days but missed the available slots. Called again and said I would have to use A&E, which I would rather not, if I couldn't see someone. Pain!

I had a total hysterectomy and removal of my appendix.

After surgery the consultant told me he felt the cyst was benign. I know he would have to feel confident to say that and he does expect the pathology to confirm.

It was a mass of mucus filled chambers with very thin walls and he had to scoop it out as it had become a mush. The appendix was also filled with mucous.

So here I am 5 days post op, gone through the fears, made a will and died many times in my head. Now I just need to get the confirmation of pathology and get the HRT. I will make sure I get testosterone as well so that I do not lose all my pubic hair.

I've been reading everything I possibly can on Complex Ovarian cysts and the like.. this discussion has been a good read.

This past thursday I had went into the doctors b/c I felt I had a UTI (never had one before)... I had severe gripping/pressure type pain when I urinated.. no burning, just that weird pressure. I also had a constant dull ache in my abdomen.

So I went in, they did a urine sample-- came back "crystal clear".. so my doc had me lay down and palpitated my abdomen which (near my belly button) produced a gasp of pain from me and immediate tears in my eyes.  She carefully checked the rest of my abdomen, then my back. She started to rattle off everything it "couldn't be" and wanted to get me in for a u/s immediately. It was unavailable (it was 4pm at that point) so she sent me to get a full hormone panel and scheduled me for a u/s down in the city at 8am sharp the next morning.

Apparently the U/S tech wasn't supposed to tell me anything, but she felt bad for me and knew I was in quite a bit of pain. She showed me a complex cyst on my left ovary which she told me was probably causing the general dull ache I've been feeling in my abdomen and back. Then she found a "Fluid filled mass" below my uterus, but pushing up on my bladder, not allowing it to fill completely, which she said is likely causing that pressure/pain when I urinate. It was quite large looking, but she gave me no measurements.

My docs office would tell me nothing-- saying she couldn't read the results b/c it wasn't her speciality.. and referred me to a specialist and sent all images over. The specialists office then called me later that day and got me in for tomorrow (5/29) at 2pm for repeat U/S and appt at 2:30pm.

I'm feeling really nervous and anxious as all I have to go on is what the tech told me... how likely is the tech right? could she be wrong?

I've been experiencing this pain for about 2 weeks now, I've also gained 5 lbs in just one month and I am NEVER one to gain weight unless I'm pregnant (and obviously not pregnant!).. the urinary issues are really annoying as well-- I'm going almost ever 30mins, seems like I'm going A LOT..but the pain of going is driving me crazy.

What can I expect at this appt? Will they tell me everything? I've never had cysts of any sort before in my life! I just had a pap smear back in Oct 2013 that came back clear.

Hi there. You will get a lot more infomation tomorrow, although they won't be able to be definate about anything without pathology.  They may be able to say what is suspected and ive a timetable for surgery. It is good that you will be seen fast because of the pressure on your bladder and internal organs. Will be thinking of you tomorrow. make sure you get back to us.

Oh, June, that is so sweet of you.  If I can I will definitely post back here afterward and let you know how it went.

I can tell you this much:  While I am very nervous about what lies ahead, as everyone else here says, I want the alien out more than anything else.

      Clare

not seen any updates from you for a while, I hope you are continuing to recover well. I followed your discussion for a while, as well as some of the others, it was really helpful to hear so thank you for posting, I'm a born worrier and to be able to relate to others with the same problems has been a  great comfort.

Hope you don't mind  me asking (sent this the other day but not sure where I posted it)' were you offered an epidural? They mentioned to me this would be offered instead of morphine (which I've had years ago) not sure I like the sound of it but just wondered if it was more beneficial . I also have six energy type drinks to take over the eve and morning of op, not heard anyone else mention these and was just curious if you had them. could be just different health authorities

      thanks

Clare thanks so much.  Once in the operation things went a different direction than they foresaw including needing transfusions so my experience won't fit with others here.  What I will say to June or anyone nervous about the operation is that you don't have to DO anything,  Nurses and doctors take care of everything.  You just follow instructions and you can do that, right!!

      Look for my private message.

Surgery all done! Consultant happy that there was nothing else other than the cyst there - and that everything is ok. Just got 2 weeks off to recover now. Will be happy when the bloating goes down and I can wear my clothes comfortably!!
