My experience with Lichen Sclerosus

I was diagnosed with this disressing condition 4 years ago, which sprung up out of nowhere during menopause,  and prescribed Dermovate.  I went away and applied it for a couple of weeks and the pain and soreness disappeared so I stopped.  I wasn't told to use it for three months, first month every night, second month twice a week and third month once a week.  I continued to use the cream when I got very sore and sex was a painful nightmare.  I went back to my GP about 5 months ago and they told me how to use the cream properly, which I did.  The lichen improved but hadn't gone.  I had a painful split on my perineum which still made sex very painful.  I searched on line and read about Emuaid.  I bought the wash bar and the cream and proceeded to use day and night.  I'm now on my second pot of cream and the bar is still going.  It has taken a long time but there is now no sign of the lichen and the split has healed.  I am absolutely thrilled with this.  I am still using the cream day and night to keep it away and still use the washbar.  The wash bar is harder to obtain as it was on Amazon but is not there at the moment.  I have just dealt directly with a company in America to order two of the wash bars.  It has taken perseverance but I can't praise the Emuaid highly enough and its all natural. Its not cheap but it does work.  I think the fact that the cream also kept everything lubricated also helped.  Hope this helps!

So, Pat are you saying you're still using the Dermovate properly plus the Emuaid? I've been using Clobetasol/Dermovate for a year and am pretty happy with the results. But I give a lot of credit to the oily cream and ointment I use all the time, and the fact that I gave up on sex. Having sex while there's a tear in the perineum only hastens the scarring and shrinkage of the vaginal opening.

Hi Morrell.  I didn't start using the Emuaid until I'd done the three months of the Dermovate. By then the condition wasn't painful but wasn't gone either.   I'm now only using the Dermovate about once a fortnight, if that, at bed time. The tear has completely healed and sex is no longer painful.  The skin in my vaginal area was a grey/white colour and is now back to pink and everything looks healthy!  Am too scared to stop the Emuaid as it's doing such a good job.  Small price to pay in my mind!  I dreaded sex due to the tear but now everything is comfortable and the split has healed.   It did take about 8 weeks with the cream and bar to completely heal things but it worked for me.

Wow, that's quite the testimonial! LS does go into remission at times, so I suspect you're also eating well, you're in a period of relatively low stress...

Am not eating particularly well!  Do like the odd glass of wine too!  Yes life is quite low stress at the minute! Not sure why it's worked.  Think it's the Tea Tree oil killing off any bacteria and the other oils keeping everything lubed!  Maybe I was lucky and didn't get it as severely as some.  I know it completely stressed me out and it made me feel like I had caught something nasty even though I knew that it was an auto immune condition.  I don't know if its at all connected but I suffered terrible joint pain during menopause which really affected my mobility.   These pains have completely gone now I have come out the other side and then the lichen!  I am just going to keep going as I am and keep the Dermovate in case of a brakeout!  Very frustrated that I could have sorted myself out 4 years ago!

I know what you mean. If only I'd had a diagnosis and treatment forty years ago. Maybe I wouldn't have the atrophy I have now.

That's sounds very hopeful Pat.  Thank you for telling us.

Will keep you informed Hanny.  It will be a few months before I know if its keeping it away.  Different things work for different people and I did think after a couple of weeks that although comforting it wasn't working.  I persevered though and then all of a sudden I was clear (for now anyhow)

Start to think that too - different things work for different people.  But maybe, just maybe ....

I hope things continue to go well for you, Pat.

Oh, forgot to ask--do you use the max strength or regular?  Would just the cream work, or do you recommend the soap, too?

Hi Suzanne. I used the normal strength plus the soap. Have used it religiously morning and bed time. It took nearly all of the first pot to work but the bar lasts ages. Just on my second pot. Good luck - hope it works for you.

I have to agree with the idea that different things work for different people -I can't tolerate anything oily on my skin around the vulval area, I even have to use the dermovate cream rather than the ointment.  Washing with water after urination and gently patting dry is the only thing that I do apart from the hydrocortisone crean daily on a routine basis. I posted on another discussion that I had to resort to dermovate recently after more than two years of weak hydrocortisone, beause of a flare brought about about by stress. Things are settling down nicely again as my stress improves -it's so impertant to find your triggers.
