My first THR on Thursday 19th October

Never joined a forum before but having a THR on Thursday and have been reading posts which are really helping me not to worry too much about it. Have been into rigorous exercise all my life (swimming, running and cycling) so devastated when I was told I would need this. Looking forward to the recovery and to discussion with others in similar position. (Friends are great but not sure they fully understand.)

Hi Salema. Have the procedure & do the exercises they give you. Take the meds you are given, they are prescribed for a reason. Before you know it you will be getting around well using your crutches, then one crutch, and eventually no crutches whatsoever. Let family & friends spoil you. Use the aids they give you. Best of success. Ray

I'm sure you will do well. Push yourself but not too hard. Listen to your body and if you overdo it rest up for a day or two.
Use both crutches until your muscles are strong enough to support you so that you are able to walk without any limping and a good gait. That's really important.
When I had my hip done twenty years ago I made a very quick pain free recovery and was back driving a low slung manual car at three weeks. Just turned up my diary so know that's true!
Had a revision of it a few months ago and again a good recovery but not quite as fast due to bad bruising I think because being on blood thinners for several years.
Good luck.
Richard

Friends are invaluable, but they will never ever understand like someonewho has been through THR.
Best wishes for a good THR & recovery

Hi Salema
A word of caution to you, as you are a keen exerciser, is not to overdo it when you first start to feel fit and well again. I did exactly that at three months post THR with aquafit high intensity interval training (HIIT is the current trend promoted for all ages/fitness levels) We were basically jogging really hard and fast in the swimming pool, and because the water supports your weight you don't realise the damage the repeated jarring motion is doing. It set me back a good month, back to painkillers and using sticks, and psychologically for much longer. Your bones and muscles need gentle treatment for quite a while in my experience.
Good luck with the op and recovery,
sjhips
