My Girlfriend has mono, I got the flu a week later. How?

my girlfriend found out she had mono about a week after having symptoms and within that week we had kissed a couple times. 3 days after getting tested for mono, i started to feel sick and decided to go in to the doctor after not feeling good for 3 days. they tell me that its too early to test for mono but they test for influenza instead. turns out i have influenza b despite getting my flu shot earlier in the year. how is this possible? could her mono virus have been passed onto me as the flu virus? can i still get mono or can she still get the flu?
