Does your heartbeat immediately increase when you lay down, or does it happen after you fall asleep? If it happens after you've fallen asleep it could be a sign of Sleep Apnea. If you're married, have children, or a significant other, ask them to monitor you when you're asleep to see if you stop breathing. Sleep Apnea causes you to stop breathing for a short period of time while sleeping, then you take a sudden deep gasp of breath and start breathing again. This causes the heart to race faster (like you're scared) to make up for oxygen levels that dropped when you stopped breathing. I have sleep apnea myself.

Does it stop when you take a deep breath and hold.
Could it be a atrial fibrillation, if it is, you need to go to the hospital immediately and have it checked out, or call an ambulance, they will do a mini ECG, and tell you if you need transporting to hospital.
It is an electrical short circuit, of your heart and needs help to stop, sometimes medication is all you need.
If it is artrial fibrillation could could be very short of breath, and should not be ignored.
