My Hemerrhoidectomy experience

I've read a lot on hemerrhoidectomies and was very put off about the amount of negative reviews on this procedure. I want to share my experience so people can understand that it isn't always as grim as google makes out.
I had 3 hemorrhoids removed last Thursday 18th May 2017, I live in Australia and this is my experience..
I went in for surgery as a public patient at about 5pm, came out and upon waking i was in a bit of pain and found it hard to get comfortable, the nurses gave me a fentanyl drip so I could press the button to boost my dose every 5 mins if needed. After I wore that out i was put on 3 antibiotics a day, 2 Targin daily, 10mg of endone every 4 - 5 hours as well as ibuprofen and panadol and the occasional fentanyl injection. I also need to take fybogel and Lactulose twice daily for soft stools for 6 weeks. I was made aware that I had a sponge of some sort up my rectum and that i'd been given a nerve block to stop pain for 12 - 24 hours.
I wont lie, once the nerve block wore off I was in massive amounts of pain, i dreaded pooing and couldn't sit on my bottom at all, i basically laid there on one side staring at the wall as i couldnt move much at all. I was discharged from the hospital on the Saturday (Thursday being my surgery day) and basically followed the directions of the pain relief and stool softeners.
I was in massive pain after i'd poo in the toilet and even then i didnt really push when i went to the toilet, i kinda just let it come out on its own, then last night i pushed the sponge out and today (day 6) i actually dont feel as bad! I know i have another 4 - 5 weeks of solid recovery but once that sponge was gone from the inside of my bum i felt a lot less pressure and pain! Today i went to get more refills of pain killers as i dont want to run out and then end up in pain again but i dont feel as if i need them any where near as much as I did which is fantastic! I can see the light from the end of the tunnel abd a huge difference between yesterday and today.
I wanted readers to know that yes it does hurt initially but the pain does ease and to my surprise 6 days in i'm feeling much better
It is worth doing if you have reoccurring hemorrhoid problems - it does hurt but dont always go off what google says as my experience is different to a lot of those I've read about prior to having surgery..
Good luck with your procedures and just know its worth it.

Hey mate,
Follow Aussie here who had the surgery back in March. My experience was similar, really not as bad as what I'd read online prior to having it done. I was even back riding my bicycle 2 weeks after the surgery!
Life without hems is awesome though, and would recommend the surgery to all!
Cheers.

Hey Pezz,
I was well and truly prepared for the worst, that's what motivated me to write this post.. i added that i am from Australia as most of what i read was US or UK based which i figured may have something to do with my speedy recovery.. i wanted to give hope to others looking for hope regarding this surgery. I cant wait till I'm fully healed but am very much on my way there. It's great to see another fellow Aussie bringing hope to others awaiting this operation

Thanks! That's why I made my topic of banding. I reallly didn't find anyone who had that experience and I wanted to share mine. It is surgery so you must expect it to hurt but as all things, it takes time to heal. Please keep highlighting your experience since you're optimisitic. Everyone needs that hope.

Hey Dee, thanks for sharing that. I'm very close to scheduling my surgery and it's nice to hear positive stories. Did you have a traditional or stapled hemerroidhectomy?

Last night (the same night as i wrote this post) i opened my bowels and it wasnt too bad but for a good 3.5 hours after i was literally screaming in pain as my sphincter felt like it had a pinched nerve in it - it was the worst pain i've endured yet but i still dont regret having the surgery, i just thought i'd share this as i've read about having pain after a bowel movement before but didnt realise the pain could be that intense. I hope i dont scare anyone off!

Of course I'm scared of the pain because I've had a fissure before that was extremely painful and uncomfortable. I think having that will increase my pain tolerance. How long did you have to wait for surgery? I've been waiting since Feb and honestly I wish I did something sooner. This is unbearable and makes like not worth it.

I didnt await long at all but my surgeon is very good and seems to get things done fast. He'd seen what state my hemorrhoids were in from past surgeries to band them, i am on day 8 post op and i am more or less pain free and going to the toilet isn't as scary as i thought it would be at the stage. I am glad its done and told my husband just before i'd definitely do it again knowing what relief I'm going to have after i'm healed. Good luck, just remember that every day in recovery is one less day you need to heal.

I'm on day 8 post op and opening my bowels is back to good, i think it was just a pinched nerve the other night, am glad the worst is over and i can go to the toilet without cringing. I honestly would do this again if i had severe issues again which i hope i dont! Every day in recovery is another day down that i get better and head towards my full recovery. I urge anyone googling not to look at the horror stories as this experience hasnt been as bad as i initially read. My experience has been more positive then negative for what it is - i've had plenty of sirgeries and yes this one is one of the most intense pain wise but for me lasted only a short time. I can sit on my bottom and can get comfortable on my usual pre op sleeping side which i couldnt do on day 1&2.. my thiughts on this surgery was along the lines of 'just do it' and i did & am glad i didnt put it off any longer. Just tell the anaethatist what your worries are pain wise and they will talk you through what to expect and what their job is to keep your pain at a minimum.. good luck!!
