my hemorrhoid story

I first saw a doctor about my hemorrhoids in September 2018 after noticing some bleeding during bowel movements. He referred me to the gastroenterologist, who I saw in November 2018, and who told me that I have hemorrhoids but offered nothing to treat them. The bleeding stopped on its own, and after that I didn't see anyone for a year and a half as they were getting progressively worse. Beginning in January 2020 I started bleeding again, and this time it didn't stop. I ended up bleeding every day, my pants filled with blood, and I nearly passed out in March. The next day I went to the emergency room, where they referred me to the surgeon. When I went to the surgeon I had to reschedule my appointment because I was coughing due to asthma and allergies and they weren't taking any risks due to COVID. I had to go back to my GP to have him write a letter to the surgeon that I had asthma and allergies. I went back to the surgeon in April. The surgeon diagnosed me with hemorrhoids again and recommended surgery. After telling me that it would be extremely painful I decided to wait until the summer, because I'm a teacher. I did some research on hemorrhoidectomy and when I went back to him in June I had a lot of questions for him, which he wasn't able to answer, so he referred me to a surgeon at another hospital. I saw the nurse practitioner at that hospital in late June, she diagnosed me with a fissure and prescribed a compound with lidocain, which did absolutely nothing. I went back in July and she recommended Botox. I had the Botox injected in August. I also stopped exercising and started sitting in a kiddie pool in my shower, since I don't have a tub. I sat in an epsom salt bath for 1-2 hours every day. The fissure did end up getting better, but after three more months the hemmorrhoids were much larger and more painful. I almost had a hemorrhoidectomy in November but cancelled 3 days before the operation. I decided to try rubber band ligation instead, and had my first hemorrhoid banded in December. After being told it wouldn't hurt, I experienced a tremendous amount of pain, which was slightly better the second day but didn't stop entirely until the third day. Then on the fourth day it fell off, and bled profusely and was very painful. The bleeding and pain during and after defecation continued for 12 more days, but was less painful than the hemorrhoid had been. I had my second hemorrhoid banded 3 weeks later, which was again very painful, but the pain only lasted for 1 day and I didn't even notice when it fell off. I was feeling much better, but my third internal hemorrhoid is now prolapsing and thrombosing. I went back to the first surgeon I saw for the second banding since he is closer to where I live. I'm going to have him band the third internal hemorrhoid on Thursday. He told me last time that was the last hemorrhoid that he would be able to band.

Sorry for your experience, it sounds awful. What type of banding did they use? The CRH O'Regan banding is the latest and greatest. I had it done 4 times and the pain was nothing of what you went through. I was uncomfortable for about a day, with a little pressure. No pain at all. Unfortunately with Grade 4 hems it didn't work on the larger ones, which brought me to surgery. I am 11 days post-op and feeling better every day. The first week was hell. I hope your next banding works for you!

Thank you for your response. I think it was the other type, I didn't ask. Do you know what the difference is? I have type 2 and 3.

I replied and the moderators didn't allow it due to the fact that I posted a link to the CRH O'Regan system. In any event, do look up the website for info. The difference in the systems is that the CRH system is quick and less painful. Once the Dr. finds the hem to band, the tool is inserted and the band goes on in a matter of seconds, and you are done. I had none of the pain many others talk about with regular banding, and had it done 4 times. I felt pressure for the remainder of the day, but no pain that required Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Since I'm very regular, I had a BM the following morning and was afraid I would do damage somehow, but I was fine. Perhaps a little more discomfort but nothing to complain about. I never did see the hem fall off, but didn't look every day either. I had a few grade 2/3 hems that it worked on, however, also had grade 4 and one very large one that became prolapsed which was the reason I had the surgery. Any type of banding generally doesn't work on grade 4 hems, or those that are prolapsed. Best to have it done while they are still grade 2/3. I've done so much research on all of this that I feel as if I could be a spokesperson 😃
