Hey everyone!
My name is Michelle & Welcome to Part 5 of My Hemorrhoidectomy Journey posts. Please feel free to read parts 1, 2, 3, & 4 to read about what has led me up to this point, why and how. Any questions/comments/feedback/advice is greatly appreciated - thanks in advance!
I had my Hemorrhoidectomy done on April 27, 2017 around noon. During the procedure, my colorectal surgeon removed the big hemorrhoid (excisional hemorrhoidectomy), and banded the other two smaller ones. Today is May 2, 2017, and is still early morning. I'm barely starting Post Operation Day #5 (POD5) today, so am not going to talk about today, will just update on what has been going on prior to today. Here goes...
POD 2:
Saturday, April 29, 2017. My oldest son's birthday, yay Not much happened today. I have been eating mostly jello and soups with a bit of saltine crackers throughout the day. Spent most of the day in bed. Husband was at home all day taking care of house and me while sister in law took kids out to have fun for a while. I have felt the urge to have a bowel movement every now and then, but everytime I go, nothing happens in that aspect. It feels weird to per though. I don't know how to quite explain it...but I feel a bit of pressure in vaginal area, a bit of pain in rectum, and when I pee, it comes out by little bits, not all at the same time. I have been taking hydrocone and stool softener at same time every 6 hrs or so. Pain is always there, but so far manageable and tolerable. No bowel movement all day and bleeding from rectum has been very minimal throughout whole day.
POD 3:
Sunday, April 30, 2017. I began to start eating a bit of solids such as cereal and some pasta with crackers, but also still lots of soup with a bit of veggies and some jello here and there. Spent half of the day in bed. Had several urges again to have a bowel movement, but again, nothing. Every time I would go to bathroom, only would pee and some gas. Have continued to take hydrocodone and stool softener, and pain had been tolerable until the evening hours. During the evening hours, the pain was no longer tolerable despite pain pill. It gradually increased to the point where it felt like my butt was on fire, OMG. So far, the worse! I also began to develop these sudden pain attacks in and around the rectal area. Idk if those are the pain spasms that I've read about from other experiences from this site and other sites? Anyways, they are terrible pain attacks or whatever you want to call them! After a while, I couldn't seem to take it anymore, and my only thought is to calm the pain down, so I got into a hot shower with the help of.my husband, and hooray! Warm water does help a lot! Too bad that as soon as the warm water is off, burning pain gradually begun to return, but at least it helped After hot shower, it was almost time for bed, so took another hydrocone to try to keep pain at tolerable level and thankfully fell asleep soon. No, there was no bowel movement all day, but the pressure/urge did increase, and everytime I tried to see if I could do a bowel movement, I felt like I was about to give birth to a baby..hurt so much, but oh well, that's how today went for me. Also, wanted to point out that I have been having some discharge throughout the day, and bleeding again has been very minimal, almost no bleeding actually. But walking has been very painful today compared to other days.
POD 4:
Monday, May 1, 2017. Not much happened today compared to Sunday, lol.
Woke up, husband got kids ready for school. They left to school. Husband gave me some breakfast, and left lunch ready for me. Mostly soups and crackers again, and a sweet bread with some milk, yummy
No urge during the day to have bowel movement, just more urinating and some passing of gas. Also, I noticed that my banded hems started to fall off. I noticed a horrible, awful smell to those things..sorry tmi After that, I had lots more discharge throughout the day, plus lots of bleeding compared to prior days. I assume it's because the banded hems had started to fall off. At night, I did feel an urge to have bowel movement, but again, nothing happened. Today, I have not taken the hydrocone as much compared to prior days. I took one in the morning, then one before bedtime. Pain has been tolerable most of the day, but still no bowel movement. At this point, well, I haven't had a bowel movement since Thursday morning. The last few urges that I felt b he need to go, I have felt the need to push, so I know it's there and soon ti come, but not too sure if I should push or should I wait for it to try to pass on it's own? Will have to wait and see, but yeah, today was ok for the most part.
Will update in a few days. Will see how the following days go, but I still fear that worse is yet to come since I haven't had a bowel movement yet and getting closer to a week post surgery.
All questions/comments/feedback/suggestions are welcome, thanks in advance and thank you so much for taking your time in reading this. Will post Part 6 most likely later this week. Thanks again, take care & God Bless

Gday Michelle,
Sounds like you're generally doing well. Try to keep mobile, my doctors recommended me to not spend too much time lieing down (However obviously don't hurt yourself!). After my surgery I tried to go for a little walk every day (I started just walking out to the garden) - The fresh air will help!
Howcome you're only eating soups and liquids?
One thing I forgot to mention in my other posts was wipes - In AUS they're called Rectogesic wipes, but they might be called preparation H wipes where you are. These are amazing, kinda like babywipes for your bum. I don't use them anymore but they were great after surgery to gently wipe and keep the area clean.
Keep up the pain killers and laxatives!
Cheers,
Pete.

Pete, hi!! And thanks for checking in
I'm so glad you're doing so well and it even hasn't been that long when you started feeling better after your surgery-wow, amazing!
As for me, I'm no longer just eating soups & liquids, but some other foods as well like fiber cereal, some pasta, a bit of fish, but still staying clear away from things that can constipate such as meats, cheese, ice cream, etc. It's hard to stay away from all the goodies, but it's obviously for the best right now. Unfortunately, I just got constipated..not sure why or what I did wrong. I've even been taking double the stool softeners than pain pills, so don't know what happened, and it has been more painful than usual I will talk more about that in part 6 which I plan to post in a bit.
Thanks for the keeping it mobile tip which I have applied these days. I've been taking small walks around the house most days now, and a couple days ago out to the yard which was very nice.
Thanks again for your feedback - it's always greatly appreciated! Take care

you pain attacks sound scary. I remember when I was standing on the bus one day, my pain got so great that I wanted to cry and just sit down but the bus was packed with people and I couldn't wait to get off the bus and run to a bathroom to cry a little. I'm so worried about having a BM too after surgery. Scares me because of the wound that's there. But maybe it's best you didn't have a BM for a week because it gave the area time to heal without expanding or disturbing it.

DId you have problems urinating after surgery? The night of surgery it was the worst. I would try to pee and nothing would come out. I would constantly have the urge and just as soon as I felt it coming, it would stop. My bladder was so full and I felt like I Was constipated but in urine form. Very uncomfortable. Then today I finally had a BM. 2 days post op and I had that same feeling, I couldn't pee and it was very frustrating. I'm now in a lot of pain since the BM. I can't sit, stand walk or lay down without feeling like my bum is on fire too.
