My Holep experience

Here is an overview of my Hoelp surgery.... I am a 52yr old male..Tampa, FL, .BPH for my entire life. Frequency and urgency for most of my life. Kept getting worse. Last year everything stopped and had to get foley cath 3 different times. Last one had to stay in the whole month before Holep surgery. BPH biopsy showed no cancer just a huge prostate. Holep surgery on Jan.02,2019. Prostate size was 75 grams, DR. removed 45 grams. Surgery went well. My Dr, leaves cath in longer than most. Cath removed on Jan 09, 6 days later. Today is 10 days after Holep surgery and 4 days after removal of cath. Stats,,, after cath removed.... High frequency to urinate, about every 45 minutes.... Starts with 1 or 2 drops of blood then a hard normal stream. Pain level is about a 6 from start to finish then have an radiating pain inside for 2 minutes. Then pain stops and I feel normal until next time I pee. Only 4 days out after cath removal but pain seems to be less everyday. I have had 0% urine leakage from day 1. Possibly due to my age? I am lucky there. Just pain every time I pee. Every once in a while I get a pain twinge inside but only lasts for 1 second, healing inside I would guess. I have not ejaculated yet probably way to soon? But I have "tested the waters". Only 3 days out I know I can get 100% rigid. But it hurts and spots of blood on the tip. I will hold off as long as I can because I know it will hurt the first time but I know now it is still going to work. Not known yet if I will have retrograde orgasms but I prepared if they are. Hope this helps anyone new to Holep. I am looking for your experience the first few weeks after surgery. I go back to work in 2 weeks and have a high physical job. I hope most of the pain and frequency are gone by then. Feel free to ask any questions for input and help. I am not shy as you can see. God bless.

Is the pain internally in your prostate or in your urethra that suffers a lot of trauma during the procedure? It is like a sponge and absorbs blood during the procedure.

As Ken said 75 grm is not that big.

The best way I can describe the recovery period is that it is a feeling of a light pressure pain when you pee. There was a lot of trauma done to the urethra have a cath in for a month prior to surgery.

Glad that things have improved. Life will soon be back to normal.

Time for an update. It is now 18 days since the catch came out and 24 days after the holep surgery. The first week is definitely the worst. Day by day everything gets better. Frequency and urgency are getting better everyday. It takes a while to get the bladder back in shape. And the pain is minimal now. It feels like a little pressure when I pee now. And lessens every day. Erections are close to normal. Everything comes out normal so I will say I got lucky and do NOT have retograde orgasms. Ejaculations were a bit painful at first, but this too gets better everyday. The hollowed out prostate and urethra are in healing mode now. I go back to work in 2 days and feel very good. I have a high physical job and feel I am ready to go back. So far I am very glad I went with Holep.

      Todd

Very happy that everything is working out for you. It does help to have a good doctor when you have this procedure.

      Happy Healing.............Ken

Be Careful when you go out and dress warm. This weather in Florida you never know. One day warm and the next cold. Weird for this time of the year.

For such major trauma to the prostate, sounds like you are doing really good. Another week or two and you will probably be good. Thanks for the update.

thanks for the update Todd. You mentioned you don't have RE. Was the uro trying to save ejac or did you just get lucky? I have to assume volume is less since the operation basically cores the prostate, is that correct?

My dr./surgeon said I would have retro after the surgery. He didn't try to save anything and I was prepared for this. Doing my research retrograde ejaculation will be a side effect 80% of the time. So I am part of the 20% that don't have it after Holep. So yes, I got lucky. As far as volume I will say it is still about 80% of what it was before surgery. Lucky again. I am only 25 days since surgery. Only thing I have noticed is that if I am full rigid for a very long period then maybe not much comes out and is a bit painful. I am in the first part of prostate and urethra healing so I have full belief that everything will be totally normal after the full healing period. Lucky again. But maybe lucky is due to my age being only 52? I am glad I can give everyone insight to Holep. It is now the gold standard in the USA if medication doesn't work for you and your symptoms worsen. Trust me, I don't miss having to wear and work with the cath leg bag for an entire month before the procedure.

      Good afternoon

Hey there. I have done some research on this. It seam that some doctors do this procedure different. Some of them cord out the prostate and only leave the shell. It's like a orange. The orange is gone and you only have the skin.

But the doctor that did Todd's only got rid of 45% of the prostate. He most likely avoided the good stuff and only removed the tissue that was causing the problem. There have been other men that had it done that way and they did not end up with retro. Maybe this is another question. Which way to they do that surgery.

That is why you need a good and caring doctor. Some doctor only care about getting you to go better and then if you have a problem with anything else they throw you a pill. This can be avoided if the doctor knows what he is doing.

      Take care...Ken
