My husband has Parkinson's, not officially diagnosed and has to wait 26 weeks to see a neurologist.

My husband has been told by 2 Dr's that he probably has Parkinson's disease and needs to see a neurologist but the hospital has said there is a 26 week waiting list. Any ideas how to hurry that appointment up, can't afford to see one privately.

once your husband is on medication his symptoms will improve they should disappear .. But the medication only works for so long , then they need higher and higher doses , then they change their meds eventually after many years the drugs stop working .. I do mean many years 10 plus .. So not seeing someone for 26 weeks is bad frustrating annoying but starting the meds a little later helps them to work a little longer..
a tip for now ..if your hubby is finding it hard to walk or move ..counting out loud 12345 for some reason helps the signal from the brain to the feet get through and once they start moving they are away ..its a good tip when the meds are not working or you aren't on them yet ..
but positively once he has been on meds a couple of months he will improve.
my mums initial symptoms were shuffling , unable to write, loss of smell , not able to use both arms at the same time to do things ..all these symptoms disappeared totally on meds ...hope this helps

yes he will improve . Once he gets diagnosed subscribe to Parkinsons assosiation they have a website and a monthly magazine with lots of positive info.. Everyone is individual some progress quickly others slowly..the key is to not get stressed that worsens symptoms ... And once he is on meds he may suffer panic attacks and anxiety these are side effects of the drugs , if your hubby realises that's what causes them he will keep calmer and manage them better. One more tip . Once diagnosed find out if there is a parkinsons nurse in your area. Get on there books. They will visit you and monitor you. They have 24 hour help line and they are so experienced especially at adjusting meds ....a real God send...
people with Parkinson's really find it hard to assess themselves to explain how they are affected , always go in with him to see specialists etc..and keep a diary of how his illness affects him . And once he is on meds how his days are ..this is vital to get the dose right so that he feels good most of the day ...your role is so important . My mum sadly died aged 82 of pneumonia caused by a broken femur. She had parkinsons for 10 years she was still walking, with a pusher , she was talking , feeding herself . She had trouble swallowing so her food was soft ....but she enjoyed her food ..She was still enjoying life. She was taking tablets every 3 hours 6 times a day and a patch which was every 24 hours . She was in final stage parkinsons there are 5 stages but because her meds were set right for her she was still active...
hope that helps ... Your right the meds are important ...I hope you get seen quickly and your husband starts to feel better soon
