My husband has recently been diagnosed with Cushings syndrome after years of going back and forth to doctors. in 1997 he suffered a breakdown now we wonder was this connected. For the past 6 years as he has slowly got worse he has been passed from one specialist to another. All of them said loose weight and exercise. Much as he wanted to there was no way we could stop the weight pilling on. The same with exercise he couldn't even walk to the gym let alone do anything when he got there. Things came to a head last week when an orthopeadic surgeon said loose weight or there is nothing we can do for your back problem. Hubby explained the problem and was then told it looks like an endocrine problem. Next day back to our long suffering GP he took down a little book and read out all the symptoms. Depression, bloating, tiredness, muscle aches sleep problems warts and all. We almost cried with relief to actually know there was an answer. Now we are waiting for an appointment to see a specialist. We have looked at loads of websites but nearly all are American is there a British chat room somewhere that we could join please. smile

I found out 14/07/06 My health has suffered for years. They don't appear to test for this, due I suppose to its occurances. I stopped smoking September 22 2005 I expected to put on weight but not 3 stone. I had been going to the gym until mid December, then some days even walking was painful. Eventually I went to the Doctor because of fluid retention around my ankles, and he checked my weight and tried to put it down to wieght gain. I told him my diet and he checked my blood pressure. He called the nurse and told her to peform an ECG, which ws ot to bad. He decided to send me for blood tests. Just as I was leaving the surgery (concerned to say the least) he asked for my form back and put on it 24 hour urine test. Thank God for that. I am feeling shaky as to the future, as i know I face further tests to find the cause. Then it will be treatment. I live in hope of a good recovery and look forward to enjoying life, as I have been assurred I will.

I have not found an English support group yet. Maybe we should start our own.

    Good luck

    John

I was diagnosed with Cushings Syndrome in 1991 after over a year of visits to the doctors and rheumatology specialists. I was in my mid twenties at the time and newly married - it was devastating to go through such horrendous body changes - bloated hairy body and the awful mood swings. An initial diagnosis was that I had lupus, however, whilst reading an information booklet on this illness I related my symptoms to those of the side effects of high doses steroids (one of the treatments of lupus). This led to the discovery - eventually - that I had an adrenal adenoma. This was surgically removed in February 1992 and after a few months convalesence and 2 years of calcium supplements (for the osteoporosis) I was completely back to normal. I've since had 2 beautiful children and no further related problems. I wish you well through your treatment and hope that you will be feeling back to normal soon - it's wonderful!

im 22 years old. I developed a large lump on my neck about 3years ago which made me appear to have a hunched back. I saw a doctor but kept being told it was nothing. I suffered with incredible joint pain and eventually someone listened to me and diagnosed me with arthritis and osteoporosis in one hand (which they discovered had several breaks). My health has been getting worse since then, i am constantly ill and in pain. My weight has gone up so much. I have gone from a slim 10 to a 16 in under a year. All i have been told is to exercise and eat healthy, which i already do. I am in my final year of nursing and because of my health i have nearly had to give up it, the one thing i love. I saw another doctor the other day who said he felt it was cushing syndrome. I feel such relief that maybe i will be able to be a normal person again but scared as to what ill have to go through to get to that point. This has got me down so much over the years and reading other peoples experiences has made me feel not quite so alone anymore.
