My journey with glue ear

I am a 61 year old female with a short history of ear pain treated by antibiotics. Last July I had too much sun and was sick (vomitting) immediately after I had tinnitus and a feeling of fullness in one ear with deafness.  This lasted, and several trips to the doctors the  diagnosis was Eustachian Tube Dysfunction. Was referred to specialist.  Had hearing test and Doctor agreed had considerable hearing loss to the one ear.  He has said I need an MRI scan which I am waiting for and see him again in January.  He suggested Optovent which I had already tried. or an ear popper which I bought from Boots paid £90! this has not worked, but other people gave good feedback on the Boots website. He suggested a grommit and hearing aid.  The GP has since said grommit is not so good long term, and keep on with the valsalva man. and popper.  I would be grateful if anyone else who has had grommit could give me advice I would so like to get rid of this feeling of being underwater in my ear. Now have a cold and have taken Sudafed which seems to be helping.

    Hi Susan

my name is Nadine I had very simpler problems with my eras very frustrating I went to a ear nose throat specialist and he said that he would put grummits in my ears which went ahaed on the 10 of jan this year it worked in my right ear within that week but my left ear took about 2 or 3 weeks for my hearing to start to sound a bit better I was given ear drops and aniobotics for 10 day which I will tell you they hurt me like hell felt like my head was going to bust you have to keep your ears dry the hole time you have the grommets which I used blue tac it was the best thing to seal the ear I've now only 10 days ago had them removed which they are feeling a wee lop sided still but my ent surgen said that would happen for about a month I had to have hearing tests to start with every month for 4 then at 6 months then at 8 and now I have to have one one the 10th of December to see if they have done there job which I'm feeling like they have but I guess I really won't know until next month. It's only a 20 minute under a Genral anasthetic to have them put in and to have them taken out. Some people are very lucky where they will fall out between the 6 to 9 month mark but I wasnt 1 of those lucky people how ever best of luck with your ears I hope you get some relief soon

Thank you for replying, are you similar age to me, I am 6l at the moment I have the ETD in only one ear.  The specialist said he could do one side under local anasthetic, not seeing him until end of January.  I have a cold and am taking sudafed the Doctor said take for 7 days maybe that will dry it up.  I hope your hearing has improved when you have the hearing test.  How long did you have terrible pain when you had grommit fitted.

I'm 38 I had trubble hearing for a few year but didn't notic it cause I used to work with old people and didn't relise how much I was yelling at everybody around me there was no pain when the Gromits went in it was just when I had to put the drop in that my head felt like my head was going to blow cause the drops go in though the opening of the grommit into your ear drum and I'm not going to sit here and say no it doesn't hurt cause it does because I was asleep when I came out of theatre there was no pain at all it was just the drops that got me my mum even call the surgeons rooms and said what's gone wrong and they said that the pain from the drops were normal.  When the ent took out the packing in my ears it hurt only for a minute or two but no pain just still feeling a little of blance but I'm only on 14days after and he told me to be aware for the month so it's all good but keep in the loop on how your going take care xx
