My kidney is leaking protein.

My kidney is leaking protein (albumin) into urine.

Just got results from a random urine test:

microalbumin 1.8 mg/dL < 2.0

creatinine 70 mg/dL range: 40-278

MALB/CR ratio : 26 range: 0-30

Doc said my kidney is leaking protein into urine. How bad is this ? What should I do ? Eat less protein to lower the microalbumin ? Or eat more protein to replace the leakage ?

BTW, I am 63 and my blood results: BUN 19, Creatinine 1.20, eGRF > 60

Thanks, Hank.

Eat your regular diet, cause if there is kidney will behave the same way.

The doctor should have given your more advice and instructions that just saying leaking protein?

      Thanks rocky,

All doctors I have seen (from the same office) never gave me advices, they just prescribed tests and meds. Did you have leakage before ? How bad ?

Hi Hank, I have 2 suggestions for you to investigate:

    1)  Limit your protein intake

    2)  Consider trying candesartan, it's a blood pressure medication.  Candesartan has the added benefit of reducing protein leakage in some people, which serves to protect the kidney and slow the decline.  It worked for me.  It's not a cure, but it could potentially help you.  Something to talk to your nephrologist about.

Good luck and best wishes to you,

      Thanks Mike,

My doctor suggested lisinopril, probably similar med but I am hesitant. The last time I switched BP med, my BP shot up and my eGRF plummeted.

      Hi Hank,

Understood, but candesartan should assist on both counts, in theory at least.

Low protein, high carb diet. I didn't follow this diet and regret it. I had a lot of protein also. (Kidney transplant 2009, failed now on pd dialysis) I was on losartan 100 mg. Hopefully your protein levels come down
