My left eye is irritated when I wear my contacts...

Hello,

So I have been wearing Air Optix contacts for at least 7 years and last year I noticed my left eye was kind having issues like it was a little itchy or dry (it almost felt like a hair was in my eye). It slowly got worse to the point where after a couple of months starting to feel that I couldn’t wear contacts. So I went to my annual eye exam to renew my prescription and the doctor didn’t see anything wrong. So they prescribed me to Biofinity contacts to see if my eye would be more comfortable with that, but that didn’t work, so then I tried the 1-Day Acuvue. Those seem to do better, but my left eye is still having issues. Here’s how it feels:

My upper lid in the center is irritated (feels like it’s dry/itchy, like there’s a piece of hair stuck in my eye). The corner of my eye (closest to my nose) where my tear ducts are it feels the same way. When I go to take my contacts out, my eye becomes extremely itchy where my tear ducts are and it slowly goes away after a few hours. And it’s only the left eye, not the right eye. There isn’t really any redness or swelling, and my eye doesn’t water when it’s irritated either. I have tried tear drops, but that doesn't seem to help.

Sorry for the long explanation, but any help is greatly appreciated.

Camib.......your description sounds exactly how blepharitis describe the condition when it first starts. The meibomian glands in the edge of your eyelid may be drying up or you may have developed a tiny cyst on the very edge of the lid which is rubbing on your eye. Try to take a close look at the edge of your lids just behind the lashline.  It will be minute and like a tiny pearl.

If you can see something like this the the first treatment is to get a cotton bud,dip it into VERY dilute Johnsons baby shampoo and gently rub the edge of the lid to help it to disperse, but dont rub vigourously. Use artificial tears drops and dont wear contacts until this has gone.

    Do some reading on blepharitis.

I actually have tried using the Johnsons baby shampoo and I think it may have helped a little, maybe. It's hard to tell if there is a tiny cyst but it's possible.

If this is the case that you mentioned, is it possible its only irritated when I wear contacts? Because I don't have a problem wearing glasses. And this started a year ago having this irritation feeling

If you can go without contacts for a while then that is a good idea. Your eye may just need some space to heal from whatever is causing the irritation.    You could then try to use contacts again .  That may be all that is needed.

Stay off the contacts for a year and then try again.    It may be that you will not be able to use contacts on a daily basis and can only use them occasionally.
