My life only really started after my hip replacement

:D My hip replacement followed a long history. Sufferred osteomyelitis at 14 months in 1944 in occupied Holland, with lack of medication due to war, received radiation [X-ray?] treatment causing its own complications. Underdeveloped pelvis on RH side. Bi-lateral pelvic joint reconstruction surgery in 1950 leaving badly shortened R leg. Total hip replacement in South Africa where I now live, August 2001 due to osteoarthritic development. Leg length corrected fully! At age 58 became completely mobile for the very first time! Returned to full time work at six weeks and am still able to lead a painfree active life.

Hi,just read your thread and I am really pleased to hear all has gone well for you. The reason for \"trawling \" the forums is simple,I am due to have the first of bi-lateral THR on 7th April and I need a little more background and reading a lot of the US forums it seemed a lot of doom and gloom and civil law suits for \"squeaky hips\" etc.

Mine is due to Osteo arthritis at the relatively \"young\" age of 51. The original intent was to do a Bi-lateral on the same day, but, call me a wuss I don't care, I wasn't physically or mentally prepared for it. back in November I was a fit ,well and healthy guy ouit riding ,walking and shooting and hawking on a regular basis. A few twinges in my hips and a few disturbed nights sleep later a trip to my GP was needed. By the time I came out of her office 10 minutes later, without the slack handful of pills i thought i would come away with, I was telling my wife \"she said I have got what sounds like advanced OA and may need a Hip replacement!\" She didn't believe it either. 2 weeks and 2 appointments later and it was diagnosed as both hips and both needing THR.

A lot of people are dismissive of the NHS but I can't fault them so far.

Hope you continue to enjoy your new found freedom.

    Best wishes Brian

:D I'm back ! Just a quick note to add to the above. Had my THR carried out ,after a cancellation by the hospital,on 10th April, mobilised out of bed the 11th,out of bed for exercise on the 12th ,+ meals, washing etc,13th made my way to the hospital shop for a paper, discharged home on the 14th.

Took everything a little further each day,now walking without aids in the home, still carry crutches \"hovering above the ground\" outside for as far as possible, about half mile. but generally do about 2- 2.5 miles per day now.

Slight discomfort most of the time and i mean slight, had worse off a bruise, few nights after surgery were uncomfortable but sleep fine now.

To anyone reading this,if you are thinking of having it done. GO FOR IT !

Best wishes to all Brian T :D

Hi all, its so good to read your experiences as i had my hip replaced at the end of June. only being 42 it was a bit of a shock to find i had to have it done and was absolutely terrified, apart from never having been in hospital ,i was also scared that this was the \"beginning of the end\" but from start to finish the NHS were brilliant, totally fantastic, cant fault them at all. I need to have my other hip replaced fairly soon and there is a part of me that is actually looking forward to it so i can get a pain free life back for the first time in about 5 years!

    Hey,

I'm 24 and i just got a total hip replaced.... how long do you have to live with these hip precautions and roughly when does the pain go? it's been 9 days.. Does anyone have tips for sleeping. I always like sleeping on my side.. can't sleep much.. especially with so many worries (crossing over etc,,,). Plus i find myself dragging my leg not picking it up (when trying to walk) how do i overcome that one!
