Hello Oons, sorry to hear of your mother’s latest diagnosis, however I am intrigued as to why she has been prescribed Pregabalin as a medication to treat it. Polymyalgia rheumaticia is an auto immune condition and the pain we experience is caused by inflammation. To help reduce the pain we need a drug that can help reduce the inflammation and as far as I know only steriods can do this, hence the good practice prescribed medication is Prednisone or some other brand or steroid. I’m interested to know if pregabalin has eased her pain, albeit with dreadful side effects. If her pain has reduced considerably i’d Have to question if the diagnosis is correct. If on the other hand the drugs have had litttle or no effect then i’d Have to question if she has been given the correct medication. Sorry I can’t offer more insight but others will help. Regards, Tina.

We r actually just talking about the possibility that they may have miss diagnosed her condition, the medication seems to be subscribed to fibromyalgi patients . She was diagnosed by two doctors , both saying it was pmr . Now I'm not so sure . Thank you Tina for ur advice .

Hi Oons, Can you verify a couple of things please? Pregablin is commonly used to deal with pain from Fibromyalgia but is given in doses of around 200mg, it seems 25mg would be too low to treat anything?  If your Mum is actually taking 25mg of Prenisolone that would sound about right for PMR. If you can check her meds, that would help clarity smile

Thank you for your advice 😊 You've been very helpful . It makes sense that the diagnosis might be wrong considering the meds she's been given .

    Dear Oons,

Yes, it does sound a bit confusing. If you could clarify things would be a great help. I have been prescribed Pregabilin in the past BUT that was for Sciatica.( Nerve pain going down R leg.) It helped greatly for the leg pain but no effect on the PMR pain.

    Take Care

If it is polymyalgia rheumatica your mother has then pregabalin is no use at all - that is sometimes used for fibromyalgia (a completely different illness) but even then it doesn't make much difference.

The ONLY drug for managing PMR is prednisolone/prednisone - so someone somewhere has got things very mixed up. The dose you quote is a dose that would be (almost) appropriate for PMR - 15-20mg is the usual starting dose so 25mg is a bit high.

You need to check carefully with your doctor and see what they have put the diagnosis as and whether her tablets really ARE pregabalin.
