My mum has had two seizures in one day, worried?

Basically, my mum suffers from generalised epilepsy, which means that she will have tonic-clonic seizures, which is very scary to watch, I did cry earlier on when she was coming around from the seizure, it scares me so much and it's stress that triggers her seizures? My dad is an alcoholic which doesn't help much, in my eyes, it's very stressful living with my mum and dad and I'm sure my younger sister feels the same, we can't get her into health services as she will not accept the help, she has depression and also generalised anxiety disorder, which I now think I have as well. What should I do to help her? She was seizure free since March 2014

Hi Jonathan, until your mum agrees to get help and she accepts that her epilepsy is a problem there's nothing you can do. You sound like a very caring son and I hope that one day she realises how fortunate she is having you to look out for her. Stress is the worse trigger for all epileptics, try talking with your dad too, ask him to get help with his drink problem. Alcoholism is self inflicted, where as your mum's problem is not.

Jonathan, I think the first thing you need to do is get help for yourself. Go and explain to the doctor exactly how you are feeling. I'm not sure how old you are so could you get another relative or close friend to go with you for support.

Even though your parents clearly don't want to help themselves, it might be that they don't know where to start. Your mum can be given medication to help control her seizures and her depression.

Your dad is more difficult because he has to recognise he has a problem.

If you go to the doctor, mention this too and I'm sure they will be able to help.

Good luck my love and remember there is always someone to help. X

Hi there. You must live in England since you "mum". I live in the USA and have had seizures all of my life. I will tell you that I am 74. I have had all kinds. My husband and I have been married for 53 years and puts up with it. He just watches and makes sure I do not fall or hurt myself. I usually feel them coming on. So if he is mowing the yard I try and stay in a safe place. Unless she has them one after another there is not much you can do. Just make sure she is safe. If she starts having them one after another be sure and take her to the hospital. This can cause death. Make a doctor's appointment for her and take her there since she is starting to have them again. My medicine wears off after awhile and it needs to be changed again. When I was younger my mother and father were after each other all the time and he drank a lot. It made me so nervous and I know that is why I had them so bad when I was young. I know you love you mother and I seem to think you are young. You have to remember that you have a life to live again so if you are old enough to be on your own, go for it. It will help you in more ways than you can think. If I knew the age of your mother I might even tell her to get out, go to work, get out among people. Remember this is a person who has had seizures all her life and at times I wish I was dead.  I often feel that strange feeling coming across me that ....well, do not know how to explain it, but it is like I am in your world but you are not in my world. It is horrible!! But out and around people really help. It takes your mind off of all the problems you have.  I do hope this helps in some way. My name is Nancy. Good luck.
