My nails have had discolouration for almost a year, any idea what it is?

I went to the doctors about it and had a fungal test done which came back negative, but she said she had no idea what else it could be. My big toes are the only ones affected, they are also really cold and the tips of my toes went through a painful stage but now feel more normal but the skin is now really smooth.. Has anyone heard of this beforehand?

hi there, looks like the beginning of yellow nail syndrome to me, you have any other symptoms? such as, a cough?, swelling?  Do you get nail bed infections? your pictures look very similiar to a couple of my fingers, but i do have other fingers that are very much worse, humped and thick. I also have a thyroid condition. (that would explain the cold toes and hands)after my nails started to yellow and i had constant nail bed infections nearly a year later i then got the cough, my hands and feet swell by the end of the day been like that for a long time.

Hi, thanks for your reply smile I don't have a cough or swelling and I've never had a nail bed infection either. Would swelling of joints count? Because all my finger and toe joints are prominent.. I have chest pain, shortness of breath and tiredness but I've linked this to my leaky heart valve. I recently had an abnormal liver function test (but they are redoing it to check it wasn't a dodgy test), could this have anything to do with it?

these are my hands pics taken march 2013. they have gotten progressively worse till in november i started to cough up white phlem. my hands and feet have swollen up at the end of the day for years. now i dont wear my rings and have gone up 1 shoe size. i now have the classic nails, shown, if you google yellow nail syndrome exactly what mine look like. i think you might be better to see a endocrine specialist and a skin specialist. good luck.

From the picture I can't see any dark stuff on your right toe. Is it only white fuzzy stuff growing on your right toe? The left toe looks like resulted from a trauma to me... I'm not an expert though

It's on the side of my left toenail. I think the white might be from when I stubbed my toe though I'm not sure..

    Hi there,

There are a number of other threads regarding fungal nail infection, (some of) which contain some useful information - may I suggest that you look these up on this site?

    Hope all goes well
