My op was cancelled :(

I sat in the pre-op ward yesterday from 7am to 5pm when the surgeon came through and told me my op had had to be cancelled. I went into a sort of shock. Apparently a scrub nurse had dropped the last remaining sterilised pack of instruments on the theatre floor - I was last to go in - and there were no more. The surgeon was so apologetic. It wasn't his fault but I felt like going out shopping the next morning for a voodoo doll. He said he could do a cemented hip (?) but he never liked to do that kind of op for anyone under 80.

This morning his secretary phoned to ask if I could go in a week on Saturday and I'd be first on the list. I'm reasonably happy again now and trying to not hold my breath....

    Dear Sarah

I'm so sorry to hear the bad news.  That must have been such a disappointment after waiting all day for it to happen.   Good that he did not foist a cemented hip on you though.   Not too long to wait and being first on the list is some sort of security.

    All the best, Richard

Hi sarah, at least that is not too much of a wait. I am 10 days after surgery presently. I scent begin to tell you how great it is now, not having what felt like the bone rubbing together in my hip with every small movement. I had severe knee swelling, with pain constantly, and again it's all gone. Hang in there, it's frustrating, and I would be the first to be balling, if I would have been you that day after waiting for so long. Good luck for your op.

Yes I’ve got that bone knocking on another bone all the time when I walk. It’s a horrid noise isn’t it! Glad you’re done and dusted now Katleen

How awful you must have been starving waiting all that time. I had a partially cemented hip (ceramic) and Im 61. My other hip was done 3.5 years ago and is uncemented. I think the surgeon makes the decision on what is best. Both surgeons seem to think that the replacement should last at least 25 years.  At least being first on the list will get it over with as soon as possible. Good luck.

Thank you Christine - just praying they don’t change their mind and put me further down! .(

Oh how awful for you, getting all psyched up, and getting let down at the last minute.  At least you will now be first on the list when you go back in.

Good lick, and have a speedy recovery.

    Best wishes

    Graham

Oh Sarah that’s such bad luck! How on earth did they not have a spare set of sterilised instruments?! My op was cancelled the day before and I had to wait 6 weeks for a new date but to be so close to having it done must be really frustrating for you. I hope all goes well for you next time.

    Regards

Hi Annie, I think the reason all the sterile packs were used up was because early on there were 2 very complicated knee operations and maybe they had to use more than they had intended? Maybe each theatre is only given so many per day?
