My Reflux Hell!!

I just wanted to let everyone know about my story and just how ill this reflux can make you feel. I gave birth to my second child and 4 months after began to feel tired and drained, general lack of appetite, shortness of breath, chronic rhinitis and sinus pain and an odd feeling down my upper left!

i began getting pains in my stomach, and my weight began to drop. It was difficult to say what was related to post baby weight loss and what was abnormal. I felt dreadful. Then i started suffering with a lump in my throat and difficulty swallowing. Food was getting stuck in my throat and I felt utterly dreadful.

After many visits to my Gp, who suggested I had post natal depression, followed by anxiety. Then the sickness began. I couldn't eat, felt nausea 24 hours a day! It was hell.

Despite my protests that I was happy it was just the feeling of lousiness everyday that was wearing me down, I ended up been put on diazepam tablets first. They over prescribed the dose, I couldn't get out of bed for weeks! I didn't actually know they were valium, and that they should not just be stopped. I stopped them and ended up in hospital for a week. I was vomitting daily. I had an endoscopy in hospital which I had begged for as I was feeling so ill. It showed nothing! They tried 12 different anti-sickness drugs to stop my vomitting....non of which worked! By this time, I had lost 2 stone in weight and was convinced I had cancer. All the blood works I had done showed nothing, apart from low calcium?

They sent me home from hospital and told me to take some more diazapam, I was horrified! I was so weak I could hardly walk from the weight loss and sickness.

I continued to be sick every day for four months, I laid in bed too weak to move around. I felt so utterly dreadful i cannot explain!

Finally, out of sympathy for me, my GP sent me to an ENT specialist to apparently 'prove' to me that there was nothing wrong with my throat and the difficulty in swallowing i was experiencing was 'all in my head'

I recall his 2 line letter to the ENT specialist. \"this woman is suffering from anxiety please reassure her there is nothing wrong with her throat\" He smirked at me, numbed my throat and shoved a camera down it. As a precaution he sent me for a barium swallow!

This swallow was the key to my diagnosis....the minute they laid me back on the bed...my whole stomach contents came straight back up on their screens. I was diagnosed with Gross Reflux and am now waiting to see the Consultant. I paid privately for the following:-

Ultrasound scan of stomach and pelvis

Colonoscopy

Ultrasound of Throat

Chest X Ray

I was put on diazapam, anti depressents (in the end I volunteered to see a pyschiatric nurse just to prove to them I wasn't suffering from PNDepression, Anxiety and anything else!)

I had a week in hospital where blood tests and endoscopy showed normal..therefore I was sent home suffering from anxiety - because their little minds could not stretch past test normal test results!

I actually began to doubt myself in the end, despite my screams that there was SOMETHING WRONG!

I am on 600mg Ranitidine daily and have Pharmeceutical Gaviscon. It helps but i'm still suffering! I also take Fortisip nutritional drinks daily to ensure vitamins are absorbed more readily. My GP hasn't apologised, but now at least he can't blame PND or Anxiety!

I sleep with my bed head raised 6 inches, and eat small regular meals. I drink copious amounts of bottled water only! I have more of an appetite now, haven't been sick for 3 months. I still get nausea, chest pain and problems with my throat and swallowing. I think back to how bad I felt and I can now manage in comparison.

Don't underestimate how bad this dreadful Reflux can make you feel. I was convinced i was going to die I was so weak and poorly!

Hi there, I know it has been eight years since you posted on the site but I’m wondering if you still check in from time to time. Would love to know how you are doing now? I am in the beginning stages of this journey. Was hospitalized in November  with severe Gerd symptoms. I was scoped and everything was normal Except for mild reactive gastritis. I also had a CT scan which came back normal. I am suffering the way you were suffering. Nausea horrible reflux have lost 15 pounds in two months. No appetite, always full, life is on hold.

You might request a gastric emptying study given your systems that you are experiencing.

Thank God I bumped into this discussion,I have been suffering for a while now and its easier to deal with knowing that Im not alone in this battle.I thought I was going to die and become very anxious when ever the symptoms strike, which makes it worse. My doctor told me 4 years back that I had acid reflux but I did not believe him cz I thought I had a heart problem cz I was overweight n experienced shortness of breath and chest pain.Everytime I got sick,I would just eat healthier and exercised and the symptoms would dissapear.Last year late december the symptoms got worse, shortness of breath after eating processed food, burning throat, feeling nauseous every now and then and I thought my life was ending.I have since changed what I eat,I exercise more often, eat small portions and I feel a bit better,my doctor told me to keep on losing weight n eat healthy then I will be fine.

I know how u feel. I had my gastric band taken out cause I nearly lost my throat. Gastric reflux/hiatus hernia. Im on the highest dose of esomeprazole. Normally fine but  every now n then i suffer badly. Cough acid, breathe acid, burp acid, and feel real poorly, heads woosy, body weak,  tummy stings. Back to docs i go

That experience sounds awful. I had chronic sinus and recurrent chest infections I was so worried about it my dr sent me to respiratory specialist convinved I had chronic bronchitis or Bronchiectasis, but the CT scan showed healthy lungs. It did show the LES lid was very diluted and wide open therefore allowing acid to escape into my throat, sinus and lungs. I'm now taking Esomeprazole and Gaviscon but I think I might going to ask to change to Ranitidine as I hear it's safer. I'm also worried about the Gaviscon as I don't think it's meant for long term use.

its a horrible condition I often feel nauseous and have burning back pain between my shoulders, I get a cough after I eat and am constantly blocked up.

i am seeing my specialist and contemplating have a Linx procedure (google it).

i had impedance test and endoscopy but those were okay. My throat hasn't been effected yet although I do get gunky feeling and icky taste a lot.

i find sipping warm boiled water helps especially when eating.

    Hi,

I am also a GERD patient for 4-5 years I think and I always go back to my Gastro doctor many times in a year. I have experienced all the symptoms related to this disease and have taken different kinds of medicine such as Omeprazole, Pariet, Dexilant from once a day to 2x a day. That's on and off depending on the occurrence of my GERD. Sometimes I also experience panic attacks and tingling in my left arm or right arm. My gastro said that it's because of anxiety. It makes sense because whenever my GERD flares up, I panic and think of a lot of things like having a serious disease or if this doesn't have any cure at all, stuffs like that. I got tired actually and recently I realized that this disease is mainly triggered by STRESS!! I'll stress that out, it's all about Stress friends.  I realized that back last December 2017, when my GERD flared up for a couple of months and I was about to do a PH test  procedure (research it online )which will cost me a large amount of money. It was suggested by my Gastro since the medicines are not working for me. Since there was no available equipment yet that time, I had to wait and I had the opportunity to go out of town with some friends. We stayed there for 3 days and it was literally relaxing and enjoying. I got nothing to think about. My GERD did not flare up that time. Then when we went back home and got to work, my GERD flared up again. I have food restrictions and I follow it mind you. I do not eat spicy food, anything with tomato, dairy or with wheat. I noticed that the difference was that I was stressed at work.

Whenever I feel stressed, symptoms of acid reflux and belching occurs. As I mentioned, GERD can also cause panic attacks due to anxiety. My gastro suggested to get a small brown bag, put the opening in front of your mouth while holding it and start breathing in and out. The air should not come out as you need to breathe in the carbon dioxide. After noticing a few days, I also decided to check for yoga exercises online to calm my body and do some breathing exercises together with it. And it was EFFECTIVE!  I noticed that when I calm myself and do some simple yoga and breathing exercises (deep breathe in and breath out a couple of times), the GERD symptoms go away.  It was amazing. Since then, I did not have GERD symptoms anymore and I'm not taking any medicine for it. Thank God! smile

Try it and notice the difference. Do some breathing exercise (you may use the brown bag exercise) until you are finally calm and your symptoms will go away. smile

PS. Continue to avoid food restrictions like spicy food and milk and tomato.

I hope that this helps you somehow. Let me know if it works for you too.

      Hi Michael,

im so sorry youre going through this righr now. Have you been referred to a gastroenterologist? You should ask your Doctor to order a Barium Swallow test, they would be able to see your digestive tract as you swallow something to see if something is going on there. And you should ask for a gastroscopy so that they take can a look at your esophagus and stomach.

keep us posted, hope you get answers soon.

Most Doctors will tell you that its anxiety when they dont have answers. Be your own advocate and fight for the tests if need be. You shouldnt have to suffer. ill be thinking of you.
