My son is 14 months old. He did not pass his 8 month hearing check so was refered to the audiology clinic where he did not pass the test as he did not respond to very low or high tones. When they tested his ear drums they found that one slightly moved and the other one not at all and that there was congestion in both ears. As he has just recovered from chicken pox and a bad cold they have said to leave him for 3 months and then they will retest him. They also said that they think he is too distracted by the toys and maybe has selective hearing! Im not so sure even though there are no obvious signs and he is developing as fast as my little girl did after reading the other comments im now thinking i should maybe get another opinion what do you think?

I think that if he still has blocked ears and trouble hearing you should get his hearing tested again in the winter, some people with glue ear have it worse in the winter and in the summer you might find they cant even notice his bad hearing. A lot of doctors have the opinion of waiting to see if it clears itself because usually it does and they do not want to enter people in for operation necessarily. If your son is having trouble learning to speak and learn then urging this onto the specialists will make them take notice and perhaps give him more tests and get to the bottom of the problem.

Please, speaking from experience, ask for a second opinion. My son turned three in April and has been going to \"school\" since he was 2 1/2. It was obvious he was \"late with speech\" at that age. Teachers couldn't understand him, other kids spoke full sentences,...everyone just said wait. Then the teachers, three months ago, starting calling him a bully and a bad listener. I knew that that wasn't my son. But no fever, no illnesses other than colds and doctors that said wait, he's too young, also no ear tests. My son was smart enough to let me know. Two months ago he started repeating \"what\" and also putting his ear to my mouth to listen bettter (still only on the \"occasion\"..) It was enough for me to stop listening to teachers and doctors and go to a specialist. My son today has a -41% hearing loss. Will be operated w/in two weeks and should/might be able to catch up on his first words and go back to normal hearing within time. I'll never know how long my son has had this, but this age and all the learning skills involved, are too fragile not to be looked at and then by professionels. Knowing now what I'm telling you, his teachers are schocked that they didn't pick up on it. Granted, the material I've read says it's difficult to pick up on, especially by such young children. Do see a specialist. If its all cear, even better! And if it's not it can heal and give your baby what he deserves.

Hi lexje. Im just goin thru what u did with my 3year old son. His carers at creche put him in time out many times for not following orders! I feel so guilty as he couldnt hear them I should have said something. He has learned to communicate with his own family I guess by lip reading and therefore wasnt 'disobedient' at home. My alarm bells started to ring when I was told that he didnt communicate in the creche at all. Not a word. So after many visit to the hosp. i took him to a specialist and he was finally diagnosed. I feel so guilty that people have probably been thinking hes an odd little boy who cant talk probably when really hes such a sweet loving little thing. Hw now has been referred to speech therapy also. Doctors i felt where a little laid back as he has had two perforated eardrums. Can anyone let me know if there has been any social behavioural drawbacks because of this?
