My story about LPR and hope everything will be ok after Nissen fundoplication

I am 25 years old. I had little difficulty speaking after food for as long as i can remember, but it was very unnoticeable from beginning.

After about 2 years ago i had very stressful event. I've got flu and pneumonia after my immune system crashed, or at least that is what i thought. After 1 week flu was gone my cough persisted, since doctors didn't exactly know what was the cause i received antibiotic.

It didn't fix problem it only made it worse. In that time I was visiting my lung specialist every month and he also thought i had infection, but even after another 2 shots of antibiotics it didn't fix problem. I even had digestion related problem in that time, because of antibiotic overdosing.

After around 4 months of coughing he said it might be reflux related. In that time i had no clue what that even was and what it meant.

6 months after heavy coughing i healed eosophagitis so i stopped coughing. But at the same time another huge problem started and that is very very bad voice problem after eating. Everything i eat and drinked cause me to lose voice for 2-5 hours, depends on food.

So my journey begann going to doctor, explaining problems, they just said it is GERD, gave me PPI and goodbye. PPI worked for about 1 week and stopped working. I went to doctor again, said i wanna specialist. So i went to specialist, said it was GERD and gave me PPI again. Frustrated i waited and was eating PPI with huge problems to speak.

After that i did research and start grasping it might be LPR. So i went to ear, nose and mouth specialist 2x times in 2 months on my own budget. He told me it is little bit red in my larynx but it's not LPR related. I was happy, but problems still persisted.

So i didn't give up i went to my doctor and begged for gastroscopy. She finally gave permission and i went there. They found hietal hernia. So i got another pills and diet instructions.

I followed everything with no short term and long term relief. I even got depression on that phase. Nobody understood me why i was so quiet and was hiding in my room all the time, i lost interested going outside, since i didn't have voice. Everyone was already telling me i shouldn't worry and live with it and stopped going to doctor so much.

So i went on my budget to another stomach specialist which mentioned ph-metry. And i went once more to third stomach specialist to convince him, to send me on ph-metry,

AND FINALLY my persistance paid of. They discovered 45x acid events daily. And they also send me to stomach surgery specialist. He told me that i can be very happy i am here because besides voice problem i could get cancer in 15 years on oesophagitis and he suggested Nissen fundoplication.

Right now i am half year away from operation and i am having really high hopes for it. I shared my story, so you don't give up, if you feel alone and everyone is against you and don't understand your health problems. It is on you to take care of yourself, because ignorance of many people (not all) is becoming bigger and bigger (even some doctors). So stay persistant and don't give up 😃.

Also if anybody has his result on Nissen fundoplication, you can pleas share it with me.

Hi Nejc! I hope you're well? your story sounds very painful but it's great news you've finally been able to get some answers and hope!

If I'm not wrong, reading from what you said, your operation will happen soon. I thought I'd share my experience with you to give you some reassurance

I suffered with hiatal hernia and GERD for the last 14 years and was taking medication daily. I finally decided to have the Nissen Fundoplication and Hiatal Hernia repair which took place in November 2020.

I was totally scared as it is a major surgery, there are so many horror stories online and people have different experiences. I'll share my journey with you.

Waking up from surgery, I had lots of pain but was given a lot of morphine so slept well and felt rather ok. I was immediately able to take small sips of water.

The next day, I struggled with a lot of pain in my incision site on the left - from the cut where the tool was located. Quite frankly, I heavily underestimated the incision pain and it was hard to move, sit, lie down and make small movements, but with more medication it was controlled. I had some pain from gas in shoulders but not much. I was in hospital 2 nights.

The first week, I was on strictly liquid diet but had no appetite. Only small amounts and also tiny sips. Drinking too fast or too much was painful. I spent the first week in bed due to the terrible incision pain. I also had some neausea which is normal but it's handy to have some antisickness pills as you shouldn't vomit as it may strain your sutures inside.

My recovery was very quick, as my surgeon said. Main issues where with neausea (which I still have), incision pain and getting back to normal activity. Swollowing at first was painful so be careful when eating - chew small amounts slowly and well. It hurts terribly when food gets stuck in your oesaphogus but it only lasts 1-2mins.

I pretty much started eating normal food around 3 weeks after. I lost a lot of weight though. You can also get some bloating and funny bowel movements which is also fine and will settle.

I no longer have any of my symptoms, take no medication anymore which is amazing. And there have been so many other benefits that I didn't know would happen! Eg my breathing is better.

I am really happy with the result. My advice is, don't listen to horror stories. Also, follow all of the advice from the doctor in relation to recovery (diet, breathing exercise etc). And most importantly, listen to your body. don't lift heavy things, rest when you need and be kind to yourself! It is a major surgery and recovery can be hard.

I'm sure you will be very pleased with your result and I wish you the best of luck!

Try drinking oils. That should soothe the pain on the inside and over time oil helps promote health heart function and brain function and some oils have omega 3 in them such as cod oliver oil. Try drinking yakult drinks also.
