My story and how I beat globus sensation
Posted , 164 users are following.
I made a promise that if I got better I would share my story on this discussion board in the hope that I may help someone. All the posts on here were a great comfort to me when I was experiencing this awful condition.
It all happened about 8 weeks ago. I was in the theatre and just sat down to begin the show when I ate a sweet normally, took a sip of water normally and afterwards felt like I was having difficulty swallowing. My mouth went super dry and I felt like a had a lump in my throat and my tongue was enlarged (it wasn't). I thought perhaps I was having a reaction to something so before the interval I had to leave and get out of there. I felt complete terror and danger and thought I was going to die. My husband was worried and took me to A&E. I couldnt breathe properly but was not wheezing. I felt like someone was strangling me, standing on my neck and I was in a complete panic that came out of nowhere. Apparently I had a panic attack or severe anxiety episode. Well, I didnt believe this diagnosis because I had over the years suffered from anxiety on and off and bouts of low mood but even when I have faced the most difficult times in my life, never have I had a panic attack so wondered why on such a happy day I would develop this. Anyway the initial attack was only the start of my problems, I was told the symptoms of my choking sensation would go away within a few hours. It didnt. This made it worse and I was not so easily going to put this down to stress as most things seem to be these days. I went to my GP who said I did seem to have some swelling in my neck and ordered me an ultrasound. As I couldn't wait 3 weeks for the paperwork to come through I saw an ENT consultant privately who put a camera up my nose and down my throat and said everyhing looked perfect and likely to be globus sensation which is common when experiencing panic attacks and anxiety. This only gave me some comfort because I was still feeling these awful symptoms. After the 4th week I had scan and this showed nothing. My thyroid was perfect, which I suspected may be the issue due to my high thyroid antibodies, although I knew I had normal thyroid function. This was also some comfort. I was suffering, and it was really really getting me down. Having to get up every day and go to work was so hard and I was so anxious I was not sleeping or eating well. I thought I would have it forever. After a while I started to think, well this isn't going to kill me as time has proven, its not getting worse or better so I need to start trying things to see if anything helps. I also had a strange crawling sensation in my neck not on top of my skin but underneath - hard to explain. Also when I put chin to chest I felt like the part between my neck and chin was swollen. I tried breathing exercises, hot water bottles, hot baths, drinking red wine, taking NSAI's, drinking loads of water, trying to eat better, sleep better, watching funny films but nothing worked. I then found a couple of websites online suggesting a very simple neck exercise to do many times throughout the day and specifically for globus sufferers. I started to do this and over a week the symptoms started to ease and has got better and better to the point that its only 5% there. The most important part is to make sure your shoulders are always down and pushed back as far as you can. No hunched shoulders or it won't work. Then carefully, with mouth closed, ease your neck back as far as it can go, all the time looking up to the ceiling. You should be able to feel yourself stretching your neck. It may make you cough a little. Then roll your head a little to left and right and centre. It probably won't work the first go. you have to do it many times a day over a week or so.
My GP said that panic attacks can cause a lot of problems in the neck, real tension and muscles, and other structures and a horrid sensation of a lump in your neck. I have to understand now that this is the cause.
Apologies for the long post but it's a long story.
I hope it helps someone.
Good luck to you all and take care of yourselves.

Hi Zee....
I have had this symptom now for like 6 months plus, it started exactly like the one person who started this whole subject on this page. I have gone through, ENT specialists, allergy specialist etc, and even had a camera down my stomach... they have put it down to Haitus Hernia, but I don't know if that has any link to Globus... I am on Omeprazoles too, and am loosing hair as one of the side affects, feel dizzy. I have lost so much weight as I can't eat what I used to, and food is limited. I don't eat fried foods, spicy food, have only had water as a drink for the last 6 months. I don't know if potatoes are the culprit or tomatoes, or the yeast in bread, that bring on this sensation of something stuck in the throat. I have tried Yoga classes to keep me calm etc. Nothing is really working and this has taken away what I have really enjoyed doing in the past, socialising, having a social drink, eating, singing etc. Have lost so much weight as well, not that I was fat to start with. Feel lethargic at times.
Not sure if i can take Antihisthamines with Omeprazoles too, or whether I can just take it randomly even though it is not an allergy....

Hi there, I like you have had this awful thing around 5/6 months, like charosaysbanything that feeds bacteria sugar, carbohydrates etc, basically anything processed, I've given up beer ( which I loved!) I still have no improvement as of yet, I'm seeing a gastroenterologist in the next few weeks and I do suspect that it is a hiatus hernia that is causing my problems, I've been on lansoprazole which I didn't like so I'm not on anything now until I know what it is, sorry I can't be of anything positive!

Hi charo, I'm waiting for a stomach ultrasound and to see the gastroenterologist, I can't remember now did you have an endoscopy? I'm so worried that this acid is damaging my oesophagus 😬 What bacteria did they say that you had? I will ask gastroenterologist when I see them, are you better now?

Quick question, did you keep burping all the time and have acid on and off throughout the day? I don't seem to go one day without it, really getting me down now 😒

Hi Katie
I did have an endoscopy and colonoscopy. No hernia , pólips or ulcers .
The breath test is the one that detected the bacteria overgrowth. Is not bad bacteria but just to much of it.

I wish I had because I accumulated a lot of gas on my stomach
Lots of muccus on my throat .

Hi charo, ahh that's good to know no hernia etc! I'm still sure I've got one!
Did you get acid on a daily basis? I forget if I've asked you 🤣🤣
Ahh that's interesting as I take a lot of probiotics and prebiotics, maybe I've overdone them 😬!! Did you often feel quite full/ uncomfortable in your tummy area?

Hi Katie
I don't think I have acid no more since I avoided all the crap I was eating before
😂
I was doing probiotics and creek yogurt as well
I had to stop even though I love yogurt
Yes
My stomach gets really full when I eat something that I should not have eating and stays for a long time .
I wish I had a fast digestion
😂

It's gutting as I eat so healthily anyway but something is obviously causing it, I looked at the sibo diet and although I thought I was being really healthy it said no seaweed ( I have seaweed capsules) flax, I eat every day! Slippery elm, I've used everyday too!! So will stop all that now too.
So should I stop all probiotics and kefir etc, every thing that feeds your good bacteria? Crazy all this, wish I could just rewind 6 months and not have all this!!!
I'm really pleased you're doing so well 😊
charo88321 katie16755

Stop all that immediately
Yes , Kefir too
Some healthy things make things worst . Is definitely what we are putting in our mouths what is causing the problem because if you don't eat or drink you don't get the globus sensation right?
katie16755 charo88321

Unfortunately I have problems all day, I wake up with the globus and it gets worse as the day goes on.
I will try the sibo diet and no prebiotics etc and see what happens!

Hi Terrie,
I think you're right, I've eaten healthily and taken lots of supplements for so many years I thought I was being healthy 😞 Maybe I have overloaded my system, whenever I've had blood tests for vitamins etc I've always been in the optimum levels apart from ferritin, I thought I was doing so well but obviously not 🙄 I will stop all for a couple of weeks and see if any difference.
I'm starting to loose weight now with all this which isn't great as I dont have much to loose.
I'm waiting for an appointment but should all be in the next few weeks, they're doing an ultrasound of stomach too.
I'm glad your acid is improving 😊

Hey Katie
I have been taking probiotics too for the past 4 days, and I think it feels worse now.... so many mixed messages...I really don't know what to do.

I've taken them for years, some really strong ones thinking I was helping my body!!
There are so many mixed comments, I guess everyone is different and the globus and acid could be caused by different things, all rather stressful really 😒

Hi Katie
Yes some swear by probiotics etc... I really don't know anymore.
The thing with this symtom is everything it happens we try to put it down to the last thing we ate, or something new we have tried.. I think it's a terrible ailment. If you just have a bad shoulder or something, you take pain killers and get on with life, least you can eat and drink what you want and have a social life etc..
This food restriction is a bother...
Thanks for all your replies

My whole incident started eating a casava.. (a form of root potato)... so was not sure if this started this whole acid reflux thing, or hiatus hernia, or allergy whatever it is...
Not having fries, or wedges is driving me nuts

Apparently potatoes feed the bacteria so charo said to give up and see if it helps.
I doubt it would have caused a hernia, just don't know anymore!!
Mine all started shouting at the children in the half term 🤔 But I had also lifted a heavy mattress so could have caused a hernia! Hopefully we will get some answers soon!

Oh dear.... lifting heavy things could cause the hernia?
Has stopping potatoes helped?
I just had a kit kat after months.... don't feel great... but don't feel great after eating anything anyway, so this is worth it... lol
Anyway have a great day....

I've only just started avoiding potatoes so not sure yet!
My dr said lifting wouldn't cause a hiatus hernia, only other hernia, not sure I believe that 🙄
I'm glad you enjoyed your kit Kat 😋
Have a great day too minus the globus and acid 😊

Yes lifting anything heavy even in exercise can cause hiatus hernia as there is pressure from stomach up into throat,, also trying to clear mucus from throat by sucking up may also cause one,

Hi Kate
You may not cus I had the same symptoms when I didn't I have 2 endoscopies
i am learning myself to just eat and it will go down not really paying much attention to the sibo as a lot of those foods are off limits when you have a stomach problem, mine is originally down to a trauma or lots of sadness/stress time will heal
No op for me as it's 3cm over 4 may cause a problem chew a chewing gum after eating it helps a bit
Had a great life until deaths/wills siblings arguing (greed !!!!) it's taken its toll and they know they did this to me stress sticks but one has to let it go and am hoping the speech therapy will help me
i am not as bad as was and heh just had creamed potato with gravy (I know I know) and mother in laws west indian macaroni cheese (picked the onions out tho) it's gone down and that's that tomorrow's another day
Oh and a vodka coke !!!!
Bye for now

Morning,
I'm confused 🤣 With the endoscopy did they see a hiatus hernia? If it's not that big, under 4 cm they don't operate? Sorry I don't know much about it all other than it petrifies me!!
Was your oesophagus ok? It worries me all this acid has caused cancer of the oesophagus 😬
Oh dear, I'm sorry to hear that, well stress really is an awful thing and so sad it's happened when a death was involved 😞
Mine all started with stress and this globus has kept the stress going! It's ongoing stress and worry now 😒
Your dinner and drink sounds delicious!!

Me too! For the last 20 years I've had weird symptoms and chronic fatigue syndrome so really concentrated on my health through diet etc, I now get yet another symptom so feel like giving up, so fed up of acid and globus.
I feel mine below my Adam's apple which is why I think it's more a problem in my oesophagus 😬 Brain running away with me again 🤣

Hi Katie
They will see the hernia straight away and will tell so ask them I think they gave me a form with it written sown on also the can see any inflammation at the top of the stomach a will take a sample it doesnt hurt i was awake to see if you may a bug eg h pylori i had that many years ago took the 3 week medication and have never been right since it wiped my system out so is recommended to taka probiotics 2 hours away from the medicine, i didnt do or know that !!!! they told me my oesophagus was inflamed due to reflux/hernia, some people have 10cm hernia and live with the same symptoms so dont worry they told me it would settle in 2 months but it hasn't and am hoping the noni juice will help me, people say to rotate things you take every few weeks, had the barium swallow and it showed a slight delayed swallow so the food just moves slowly and ride the last swallow out it will pass, sip or drink water and then chew a gum for a few minutes to get the crumbs and saliva going (orbit sugar free is good it has xylitol in it which is antibac sugar and tricks any germs to grab on to it and kills them) If you have dry mouth/throat ask the doctor for some pastilles they also have xylitol but are a bit gummy for me
I hate sneezing while eating and have been told to hold my nose closed when I feel it coming and that helps me a bit try to relax your throat and face when swallowing try not to speak while eating as this irritates the throat and food as it it on its way down
Doctor told me to think of what I ate 3 meals ago if have an upset stomach !!!!!! What every day ha ha
Bye for now

Hi Susan,
When they said it will settle down, divthey mean the hernia? Can it mend itself?
I've been tested for H pylori, it was negative, my son had it when he was 8, made him really unwell.
I keep getting sharp pain just below left rib so I'd imagine that's where hernia is, did your barium swallow show the hernia?
I'll have to be put to sleep, it scares me too much!
Did they test the oesophagus for Barrett's oesophagus? That scares me, just so fed up this has all happened 😡

The orbit gum is the long flat sticks with no hard coating as there is on the normal tablet size gums

Hi Katie
The hernia is your stomach protruding upwards thru the muscle and just needs to drop back down and your muscle should keep it there so yes i think it can be cured, the pain is in the same place as yours my doctor pressed on it years ago and said it was nothing so that may be a muscle knot maybe from coughing or exercise I dont know, have you tried the exercise to relax the hernia where you breath in and on the out breath push in the middle of rib cage and drag down repeat as necessary ???
They didn;t test for barrett's oesophagus as they would take a sample, my sister in law has a hernia and she takes peppermint capsules, along with the ppi's (they have bad long term use side effects tho and now has arthiritis so a few months or so should be fine but doc said they mask your stomach and you don't get the nutrients from your food and oral spray multivits are good 30 seconds and they are absorbed get mine on ebay but am lapsy at taking them)
you will be fine doing it awake you know i did it twice they do numb your throat first

Gosh you're brave!!! My husband said it's the worst thing he had done!! Made him claustrophobic!! I was fine with the nose one but not sure I can handle the throat! I'll panic!
I wonder if an ultrasound will show a hernia 🤔
Ahh yes my nutritionist said they're not good to take long term!!
I use the DLux multivitamin spray 😀
I keep meaning to do the exercises then get bored!!
I've read if your diaphragm is weak it can cause a hernia, well I don't breath properly so really need to concentrate on that!!
Have a lovely evening

When you get all this dealt with, hopefully alot of yr stress will be minimized. .stress plays such a huge role I'm sure..my brother has a hernia. He's had it for yrs. He won't get surgery because drs want him to lose some weight first. He actually wears a vest all the time because u can c it protruding out of his shirt..but he just keeps going cuz he can't lose the weight. .he a big guy. Tall too..so hernias must not be real serious I guess ex c ept for uncomfortable and painful..he doesn't seem.to be in a lot of pain tho..

Hi Terrie, I agree, stress is not good, for many years now stress has played a huge part in most of my symptoms, I need to get a grip 🤣
From what I've read a lot of people have hernias and never know, for me the unknown then all the testing causes a huge amount of stress!
I hope you are ok

Hi Katie
I dont know if the ultrasound will show it I know that the opening to the stomach is where we have that pain, god food has to go so far down to reach your stomach no wonder sensitive people start panicking
You have 4 kids you say I have 3 so you know pain, you can if you want do the endoscopy without sedation count to 5 slowly in your mind and the camera will be down but only you can decide, you will not choke and you can breath thru your mouth and nose which surprised me cus I was so congested, they hold your hand all the way thru (I didn't want to be sedated and ate half an hour afterwards)
Yes it is all about the breathing, look up mindfulness, people have good results after doing this breathing relaxing 15 mins per day
My brother has the same as terries and when he coughs you can feel a big bulge its a sliding one, he is slim, does paving/flagging for work (they weigh a tonne) eats big doesnt really chew his food much coughs and swallows it back down and it's gone, does get runny nose but ti doesnt bother him, why us well it's all we think about cus it hurts and noone around me can understand that, do you maybe think that we spend so much of the first part of the day drinking liquids that when we eat we have gone too long without chewing and the muscle spasm starts cus I take too long eating and my jaw is worn out by the end
Take care

Some things I've read say it does show on ultrasound but like you I doubt it will.
i would rather not have anaesthetic as I suffer from POTs and my heart rate can be affected with anaesthetic but I'm petrified of having it done.
I personally think I think too much and worry too much about it, it's on my mind all day.
i actually don't seem to have a problem eating, I do have a smoothie first thing but then eat normally for the rest of the day.
my throat is always more dry come the evening and globus is more noticeable but I guess stress and tiredness don't help.
ive done breathing exercises before ( I went on a buteyko course) it really helped with all my symptoms so I know I should start again but I find I'm worrying too much to properly relax if that makes sense!
Im off for a bath so will try and relax then! Hope you've had a good day

Katie, I truly understand the not being able to calm. Such a horrible feeling. Been to where I actually strt shaking uncontrollably and couldn't stop. All because an abnormal mammogram which turned out 2 b nothing but fibroid cysts..I know the fear and stress an not being able to relax no matter how hard ya try..Iv had cancer in the past. So I guess this is where my fear comes from
Such a horrible, horrible thing. My district gets irritated with me because I fear health issues, not many understand, but I know the fear is real and can't be helped..hang in there..I do understand...

Ahh Terrie, I'm sorry to hear you had cancer 😞 Well that would definitely explain your fears, I get that with the mammograms, I've had one lump removed and that was very scary, I was only 33 I then have had recently another scare, it seems when you have these symptoms arise which I've had over the last 20 years starting age 17 one weird thing after another you then feel fearful of your health and think the worst, I completely understand.
For me the stress causes a lot of my symptoms but a very hard cycle to break. Now having the globus I'm back in the fear zone again!!

Hey I read this on another forum. Thought of you...may be worth trying.
Blowing up balloons - A simple relief for acid reflux.
Posted about 10 hours ago
Five years ago, I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia after having suffered from acid reflux or GERD for a long time. Nexium was prescribed and it helped a little but the reflux persisted until I started blowing up balloons after reading about the benefits on the internet. There was immediate relief and this practice strengthened my diaphragm so now the condition rarely troubles me. It took a while to refine my technique until i was satisfied with the outcome. Needless to say, this practice has now become a valued and useful part of my lifestyle.
Here's how it works for me. Several times a day (at least twice) I partially blow up a balloon without undue exertion - three steady puffs are enough - then carefully let it deflate (by taking the balloon out of my mouth and using my fingers as a valve) while my lungs refill The trick is, during the slow release of air from the balloon, to not take deliberate breaths but just allow the lungs to fill naturally with air (ie do not deep breathe.) This is important - no hyperventilating. Repeat this sequence it will become quite effortless, very calming and, eventually, second nature.
I enjoy this activity for perhaps 20 minutes each session - usually at bedtimes but often in the middle of the day on a sun lounge - always lying down and listening to music or so it becomes a kind of meditation. That sense of relaxation is a most welcome feeling as is my much improved lung capacity. However the vital outcome is that (provided my diet is sensible) the reflux or GERD is no longer a problem (and my Nexium tablets remain in their packet). Plus there are literally dozens of other benefits achieved by this simple breath control exercise - lower blood pressure and increased mental acuity being two.
Blowing up balloons certainly works for me. (And I'm now 73, expecting to live well into old age, my future untroubled by the acid reflux of my past!) I hope it gives you relief also.

Ahh wow! Worth a try! Will have to buy some balloons, it's all about the breathing and strengthening that diaphragm!! I have something called a breath slim and I think that would probably do the same thing, may have to take it out of the cupboard!!

Yea, and I saw on a lingual tonsil site that even when gettin tonsils out, you can still have lingual tonsils..read up in forum, alot of them have pain all the time. Glad I dont. No, no weight loss...I'm am trying to eat healthier tho so hoping I can lose a few pds. I'd like to lose about 15 lbs..so hoping I can do that. Are you losing weight because you can't hardly eat due to the acid,? Or are you losing weight yet still eating?
Try not to worry Katie. I truly believe you are carrying so much stress that is relating to most of yr issues..if I hurt like you eating, I wouldn't be eating much either..Iv read on other forums and wow, ppl are in bad shape out there..I feel for everyone with this crap..

I was really naughty tonight and had a gluten free, home made pizza, jacket potato and salad, was yummy but low and behold an hour later gaviscon was needed 😒
I'm not in pain when eating it's just the acid after, drives me mad, I reckon I've lost weight due to cutting out the carbs and the beer, not tonight!!

Hi Katie
Good luck for tomorrow ask for the result are you going for sedation ?? If you don't he will talk to you all the way thru, I knocked an hour off the fast period due to the form filling blood pressure checks and waiting time I also swished mouth with water just to keep it moist they said it was ok even while waiting
You ate salad last night I used to eat loads but it kills my stomach as does peppers or black pepper in fact loads of things do too many to list< I eat sooo slow and think that all the chewing contribute to burping wind, jaw pain, I will chug some water and suck some mints but even mint can be a throat irritant heh ho
All the best

Hi Susan, that's really kind thanks, it's just the ultrasound tomorrow then seeing gastroenterologist next Thursday, I will definitely want to be sedated as I'm petrified, feel so nervous all this waiting!!
Oh yes, I ate salad but only cucumber and lettuce, can't do tomatoes or peppers now, so annoying 😒
I hope you are doing well?
Will keep in touch when I get any results 😊

You can have all these symptoms without a hernia it;s the reflux damage but they will see a hernia when the endoscopy is done I didnt have a hernia on my first endoscopy but I did on the second 8 years later, I used to drink cider before the first one and it wreaked havoc with my stomach

completely understand, I’m the only health freak in the family, always eat healthily, take supplements but always the one who suffers weird symptoms, maybe it’s time to be bad 🤣🤣 I am the one however who worries too much and suffering anxiety!!

I guess I’ll need a barium swallow or endoscopy 😬 I hope we can all recover fully soon 🙏

Yea me too. I have a large family and none of them have anything ongoing ..it's all me..the deviated septum, throat issues, acid reflux, globus, tinnitis, and many more issue as well. I took a list into my doctor's office and the nurse took the list out for a moment and I know she was showing everyone out there my list. I bet I had 10 things on that thing. But it's just weird stuff that's going on with me. I just don't understand why it had to be me that has everything wrong. But praise God none of it seems to be death related. Guess tinnitis is the worse thing iv got going on. Panic tries to set in with tht..Sometimes I wonder about trying to be healthy..

Oh dear Terrie 😞 Well if it helps I could also write a list but could probably manage 15 symptoms of weirdness!!
I'm getting really worried as just loosing more and more weight, I'm too light anyway so this just adds more anxiety, all I've really changed is the no alcohol so getting worried that all this globus and acid is really that there is something wrong 😩

Katie, try not to worry unduly. Iv read on other forums of others losing weight as well. I think that's just another symptom with acid. So unless they tell ya ro worry, try not to do that. You will be fine Katie..Once you get all yr tests, you will feel so much better. You will c. And if u do have a hernia, I'm sure that is part to blame for the weight loss as well. So do like I do, when u find yourself thinking the worse, say, not Goin to worry until I know I got something to worry about..just say it and mean it..YOU will be fine Katie. I know it!!! Lifting up prayers for your peace..Rest well..

Bless you! Thank Terrie 😊 I'm reading into things too much, I wear a fitness tracker and my resting Heart rate as been rising everyday, so that and the weight loss I keep thinking something bad is happening, just wish I could relax in my brain!!
I need to get all these tests out the way then deal with it.
Thank you 😊

Hi Katie
You will lose weight if you aren't getting enough calories and are a busy mum I an trying to eat more and strawberry meritene drink is like a half meal and its nice, also acv is well known to cause weight loss and also when people diet or are ill the stomach shrinks so can't eat as much before feeling full, I try not to drink while eating its hard
Take care

I think you're right Susan, I've been really busy recently as in the process of moving so probably haven't been eating enough, I think also stopping the alcohol should have caused some weight loss!
I never drink at the same time as eating, just eating a big curry so that will help but not the acid 😬😩
Hope you're well 😊

Thats great, do you have shoulder pain if you do things such as chopping veg will make you worse I go to morrisons sometimes and get one of those big fresh cooked daily family meals ready prepped veg shove in the oven and good to go, Also the doc said that the smell or prep of food can make me produce lots of saliva before I even eat !! A lot of the problem is trying to switch off the what is going to happen when I have eaten this so I tell myself it will pass, my friend told me to get a calming stone and talk to it when anxious like shirley valentine ha ha Do you ever notice that if somebody cooks for you it goes down better ????

Hiya, I don't seem to suffer shoulder pain, I generally always cook from fresh but I had read that about the smells of cooking etc, gets your digestive enzymes active ready to help you digest food, if I'm Honest I don't very often have people cook for me 🤣
My food goes down fine but it's the acid I get after, strangely I didn't have after my curry and I very rarely get in the night 🤔 Will be interesting to see what gastroenterologist says on Thursday!
Have a good day
