My story and how I beat globus sensation

Posted , 164 users are following.

I made a promise that if I got better I would share my story on this discussion board in the hope that I may help someone. All the posts on here were a great comfort to me when I was experiencing this awful condition.

It all happened about 8 weeks ago. I was in the theatre and just sat down to begin the show when I ate a sweet normally, took a sip of water normally and afterwards felt like I was having difficulty swallowing. My mouth went super dry and I felt like a had a lump in my throat and my tongue was enlarged (it wasn't). I thought perhaps I was having a reaction to something so before the interval I had to leave and get out of there. I felt complete terror and danger and thought I was going to die. My husband was worried and took me to A&E. I couldnt breathe properly but was not wheezing. I felt like someone was strangling me, standing on my neck and I was in a complete panic that came out of nowhere. Apparently I had a panic attack or severe anxiety episode. Well, I didnt believe this diagnosis because I had over the years suffered from anxiety on and off and bouts of low mood but even when I have faced the most difficult times in my life, never have I had a panic attack so wondered why on such a happy day I would develop this. Anyway the initial attack was only the start of my problems, I was told the symptoms of my choking sensation would go away within a few hours. It didnt. This made it worse and I was not so easily going to put this down to stress as most things seem to be these days. I went to my GP who said I did seem to have some swelling in my neck and ordered me an ultrasound. As I couldn't wait 3 weeks for the paperwork to come through I saw an ENT consultant privately who put a camera up my nose and down my throat and said everyhing looked perfect and likely to be globus sensation which is common when experiencing panic attacks and anxiety. This only gave me some comfort because I was still feeling these awful symptoms. After the 4th week I had scan and this showed nothing. My thyroid was perfect, which I suspected may be the issue due to my high thyroid antibodies, although I knew I had normal thyroid function. This was also some comfort. I was suffering, and it was really really getting me down. Having to get up every day and go to work was so hard and I was so anxious I was not sleeping or eating well. I thought I would have it forever. After a while I started to think, well this isn't going to kill me as time has proven, its not getting worse or better so I need to start trying things to see if anything helps. I also had a strange crawling sensation in my neck not on top of my skin but underneath - hard to explain. Also when I put chin to chest I felt like the part between my neck and chin was swollen. I tried breathing exercises, hot water bottles, hot baths, drinking red wine, taking NSAI's, drinking loads of water, trying to eat better, sleep better, watching funny films but nothing worked. I then found a couple of websites online suggesting a very simple neck exercise to do many times throughout the day and specifically for globus sufferers. I started to do this and over a week the symptoms started to ease and has got better and better to the point that its only 5% there. The most important part is to make sure your shoulders are always down and pushed back as far as you can. No hunched shoulders or it won't work. Then carefully, with mouth closed, ease your neck back as far as it can go, all the time looking up to the ceiling. You should be able to feel yourself stretching your neck. It may make you cough a little. Then roll your head a little to left and right and centre. It probably won't work the first go. you have to do it many times a day over a week or so.

My GP said that panic attacks can cause a lot of problems in the neck, real tension and muscles, and other structures and a horrid sensation of a lump in your neck. I have to understand now that this is the cause.

Apologies for the long post but it's a long story.

I hope it helps someone.

Good luck to you all and take care of yourselves.

x

So a quick update from me..

Last night I ate late.. Around 10pm. I had rice and curry sauce from the Chinese with vinegar. I slept propped up and this morning when I woke up in stead of continuously trying to swallow mucous down and keep drinking water to get it down I just did a few swallows then stopped myself and have carried on like that so far this morning and it hasn't been so bad. At one point I coughed and it felt burny in a sense. I can still feel some mucous there but trying to ignore it.

I have had the odd spasm where I've gone to swallow and it's like my throat is saying nope I'm not ready and I've also tried not to swallow and my throat is saying yes I need to.. My throat needs a reset button I think!

I can feel a funny tickling in my throat but I'm putting that down to mucous or maybe I need a good cough.

Hopefully we can figure this all out one day (sooner rather than later) and be able to put a complete end to it.

Oh and the clicking/suction feeling I get is right where the back of my mouth meets my throat. I think it's where I swallow too much air as I'm swallowing as I always burp very soon after!

Looking back to last time I had this it lasted 3-4months and as I'm not properly even a week in that sounds so far off!

Probably the vinegar helped. You may have low acid. Try takin 2 tsp apple cider vinegar in half cup wtr drink. See if it helps..

How are you doing charo and deon? I'm hoping globus is getting better for you 😊

      Hi Katie,

Thanks for asking! I'm doing alright. Globus isn't ruling my life anymore although I do swallow a lot, and every time think THIS may be the swallow that swallows it all down. The clicking in my throat is very present also.

But comparing it to a couple months ago, it's much better. I never thought I'd be able to live through a day thinking about anything other than my globus. Actually, today isn't that great, but again, compared to before, I'm happy.

Did you ever get your hiatal hernia test done?

      Hello Katie

I have been feeling better with the globus but Very careful of what I eat

Avoiding any starchy foods or foods that create inflammation

My diet consists of eggs, nothing spicy, nothing fry, lots of olive oil, raw vegetables every day to help inflammation, nothing after 5 pm except for non carbs soft foods like aged cheese of good quality in small amounts.

It really sucks but I had to give up my potatoes that I love ??

But also avoiding artificial sweeteners or diet soda

Pretty much living a clean life

When I go out I always order fish 🐟 or shrimp but not fry

I love fry but I don't want to temp it. 😂

      How you doing?

Ahh that's so good! I'm the same, better than when it first started but never gone for me. I do sometimes forget though for a bit, today I feel phlegmy and when I try and clear it's quite scratchy.

Still on holiday but home soon so will book with gastroenterologist 😬 I'll let you know how it goes! I hope you continue to improve 😊

That's brilliant!! Light at the end of the tunnel!!

I'm still on holiday so diet not as good as when I'm at home 🍻🍔

I also eat pretty much like you, I don't eat gluten or sugar.

I still have it but once I'm more strict I hope it will improve too!!! Diet and stress definitely effects it 😒

Great to hear you're doing well 😊

      Katie an charo,

Went to ENT again. He said all looked pretty good. Again said those little lumpy things around my epiglotis is lower tonsils enlarged. Truly blev this is a part of my problem as well as the acid and globus. Charo, I did salad today and watermelon, did good, but then ate a regular meal of beef and noodles and beans and potatoes, acid flared up tonight..but Katie, he said didn't look real bad in throat, so I told him I did acv he said that's fine, that that is homeopathic and no problem using it. I never told him I got off the meds..lol...sooo, so far what I'm going thru I can deal with. He wants 2 c me again in 3 months...jeesh..I'm thinking...Why????

    • Posted

Hi Terrie, that's really good to hear!! Glad about the ACV 😊

Mine is definitely stomach related as I don't have tonsils!

My acid still comes daily but has calmed down since coming off lansoprazole, globus has flared up a little bit recently 😒

Do ENT not recommend gastroenterologist to see if you have hiatus hernia or anything?

      Glad all looked good 😊

Yea, my globus acting up as well..yesterday afternoon and this morning. 4gt my acv this mornin so clearing throat often. No he didn't recommend tht. I think I'm just settling dwn 2 the fact to just deal with what iv got the best way I can..tired of going to drs. with no answers.. I don't think acid coming from tonsils, but acid is affecting the tonsils with a raw feeling and enlarged..lower level around epiglotis..so....I'm just dealing..wink have around great day. 9:15 here..a.m.

Hiya, mine not good at the moment, I've been a bit stressed so not breathing properly and I think that effects it 😒

I would think the acid is coming from your stomach and irritates your tonsils.

Like you I'm fed up with Drs, just know I won't rest until they've looked into my tummy, just got to pluck up the courage to go again as it scares me!!

You know Katir, I totally understand the fear, but I was thinking just yesterday how I was so full of fear and anxiety thinking the worse for well over a year, then I finally got results from going to dr that I can live with. I just knew in my heart I had a serious disease and it would wake me up in total fear and torment. But now, I regret not just bucking my fear and getting cked out sooner. I could have eliminated all that stress that plagued me mercilessly...so what I'm saying, Just do it. Get it over with. The outcome can't be any worse than what's imagined...I too have breathing difficulties with this. You have the same symptoms as others, so once you know for sure, peace...I too am fed up with dr. And will prob cancel next appt. It's just a hey how r ya visit. So go again, get all results then that is half the battle over with, just a Lil advice from one whose been there..

      Terrie

I'm glad that your throat is not that bad and see what happens when you ate potatoes and noodles?

The problem starts because you feeding the bacteria so it multiply in millions.

Is so hard though but I've been substituting my cravings for carbs with Aged cheese 🧀

Make sure it says "Aged" though

Try it for me today and let me know how it worked out.

      Love to hear it !

      Ahhh

Don't forget the organic extra virgin olive oil

      One teaspoon before meals

It kills the bacteria in your throat and lubricates your throat so the food slides easily

You will feel a burning sensation in your throat at first , that means is doing its job of killing bacteria and so the inflammation goes down.

      Good luck !

Hiya, that's a feeling I know only too well! I have thought that every symptom I've had for the last 20 years is something I'm dying from, most of the times it's anxiety related.

I still can't believe that your throat can just do this without it being something else 😬 I even worry though if it's just a hiatus hernia as I don't want to be on medication and eventually it would need operating on which petrifies me, I do believe the unknown and Drs visits and test cause more anxiety than it should though!!

Some days are better than others with this as I'm sure you know! Having a bad day 😒 Just want to feel normal and not have to worry all the time!

I know, it is hard to blev but acid is very destructive..I was never a stressed until finding the knot in my neck. When I had the mri done, the day after tinnitis started. Drove me crazy. The stress level I had fearing what the knot in neck was just hit the ceiling. I couldn't sleep, eating? Well I can always eat..hahaha..but I was beside myself for over a year as different symptoms kept hitting and I blev ed it was andll related..I feel like now I can breathe a Lil while until the next one hits..it's almost like ya wait on the next symptom to come and scare ya again. But I pray that never happens for either of us..it will get better katie..Really gonna strt praying hard for us both and others on this site..I pray each of us find a solution that works..wink

Stress is also awful what it can do, amazing how powerful the brain is.

I've started taking digestive enzymes now I'm off the omeprazole to see if it helps the acid, will keep you posted, I've got to the stage again that this feeling is driving me mad again, keep throat clearing, I was more relaxed on holiday so didn't bother me as much.

Let's hope we can all get off this globus site soon 😂

im petrified of having a hiatus hernia and needing an op so really hope this isn't the case 😬

Its funny how powerful our brains are, I only have to walk pass the bathroom and I'm desperate for the loo, even if I've only been half an hour before, how mad is that 🤣 Need my brain resetting I think!

      Have a good day 😊

Omgosh, I am he same exact way about the bathroom..I always go if I pass one just in case. Bladder not the greatest..when traveling, everytime e have to stop and in between I hit it. I know where every rest area is on I75..unreal...the brain is an amazing thing..I read where tinnitis is caused by the brain filling in the empty space where one lists small amt of hearing.
    • Posted

      Loses small amt of hearing..
    • Posted

Haha!! We are so similar!! I know where all the loos are too when I'm out! Always thought it's because I've had 4 kids but we can drive all the way from UK to spain and I don't need the loo much, because I can't see them from the road 😂😂 it's all the brains fault I have these symptoms!!

Tinnitus must be awful though 😞 I only get it momentarily but that is usually if out in shops and I read that's caused by anxiety 🙄
