My story and how I beat globus sensation

I made a promise that if I got better I would share my story on this discussion board in the hope that I may help someone. All the posts on here were a great comfort to me when I was experiencing this awful condition.

It all happened about 8 weeks ago. I was in the theatre and just sat down to begin the show when I ate a sweet normally, took a sip of water normally and afterwards felt like I was having difficulty swallowing. My mouth went super dry and I felt like a had a lump in my throat and my tongue was enlarged (it wasn't). I thought perhaps I was having a reaction to something so before the interval I had to leave and get out of there. I felt complete terror and danger and thought I was going to die. My husband was worried and took me to A&E. I couldnt breathe properly but was not wheezing. I felt like someone was strangling me, standing on my neck and I was in a complete panic that came out of nowhere. Apparently I had a panic attack or severe anxiety episode. Well, I didnt believe this diagnosis because I had over the years suffered from anxiety on and off and bouts of low mood but even when I have faced the most difficult times in my life, never have I had a panic attack so wondered why on such a happy day I would develop this. Anyway the initial attack was only the start of my problems, I was told the symptoms of my choking sensation would go away within a few hours. It didnt. This made it worse and I was not so easily going to put this down to stress as most things seem to be these days. I went to my GP who said I did seem to have some swelling in my neck and ordered me an ultrasound. As I couldn't wait 3 weeks for the paperwork to come through I saw an ENT consultant privately who put a camera up my nose and down my throat and said everyhing looked perfect and likely to be globus sensation which is common when experiencing panic attacks and anxiety. This only gave me some comfort because I was still feeling these awful symptoms. After the 4th week I had scan and this showed nothing. My thyroid was perfect, which I suspected may be the issue due to my high thyroid antibodies, although I knew I had normal thyroid function. This was also some comfort. I was suffering, and it was really really getting me down. Having to get up every day and go to work was so hard and I was so anxious I was not sleeping or eating well. I thought I would have it forever. After a while I started to think, well this isn't going to kill me as time has proven, its not getting worse or better so I need to start trying things to see if anything helps. I also had a strange crawling sensation in my neck not on top of my skin but underneath - hard to explain. Also when I put chin to chest I felt like the part between my neck and chin was swollen. I tried breathing exercises, hot water bottles, hot baths, drinking red wine, taking NSAI's, drinking loads of water, trying to eat better, sleep better, watching funny films but nothing worked. I then found a couple of websites online suggesting a very simple neck exercise to do many times throughout the day and specifically for globus sufferers. I started to do this and over a week the symptoms started to ease and has got better and better to the point that its only 5% there. The most important part is to make sure your shoulders are always down and pushed back as far as you can. No hunched shoulders or it won't work. Then carefully, with mouth closed, ease your neck back as far as it can go, all the time looking up to the ceiling. You should be able to feel yourself stretching your neck. It may make you cough a little. Then roll your head a little to left and right and centre. It probably won't work the first go. you have to do it many times a day over a week or so.

My GP said that panic attacks can cause a lot of problems in the neck, real tension and muscles, and other structures and a horrid sensation of a lump in your neck. I have to understand now that this is the cause.

Apologies for the long post but it's a long story.

I hope it helps someone.

Good luck to you all and take care of yourselves.

x

    Hi Chippy

Thanks for the details on what you eat...

Oh no food after 5pm, and aged cheese, that is interesting.

The alcohol seems bit promising.... may give it a try....

I am a bit confused is Globus similar to Acid reflux, clearer I can see they are connected... but one is more stress related.   Was reading a forum on that too, and they said acidophilus helped them.  They got off all the other medications.

I like the sound of the wine bit too 😂 I've always drunk beer and have had to give up so if wine helps I may give it a go 🤣🤣

Your diet sounds great charo, I do the same, a protein shake in the morning, I just find I'm constantly thinking what I can have to eat and with 4 kids it's driving me mad! Just want to eat anything!!

Hello, all!  I've been suffering from globus sensation for about 3 years now and it is honestly awful. I've had a barium swallow study, throat study, and x-rays but there seems to be no physical explanation which led my doctor to just generalize the condition as globus sensation. I'm currently at a very important point in my life and this condition has made me far more depressed, resulted in a lack of productivity, and overall despair about the future. I'm currently on some anti-anxiety medication that my doctor prescribed to possibly alleviate some of the pressure in my throat but it hasn't done anything. The sensation is basically what everyone has been saying; a lump in the throat, tightness around my neck like someone is trying to strangle me. The thing is this sensation persists throughout the day and night so I get no relief! At this point, I'm really desperate and open to any solutions so if anyone might be able to give me a few helpful solutions that would mean the world to me.

    Thank you!

Hi Caitlin, poor you, 3 years is such a long time, I’ve only had 8 months and it’s taken over my life, it’s thoroughly depressing.

How did yours start? A stressful event?

Mine started after suffering from stress 😒

Do you get acid with it? I suffer from acid daily now, I never used to, I’m waiting to get an endoscopy done, have you had one?

I was told once I realised nothing is wrong then it would disappear 🙄 well clearly I still believe something is wrong as mine just gets worse!

Have you tried the neck exercises?

I’m sorry to hear you are having such an awful time.

      Hi katie16755

Well, I had a scan on my neck and thyroid on Monday and everything is good, I have a small thyroid apparently! So I went to the doctors today and asked him if he'd ever heard of globus sensation ,he said no, but he did listen to me and went and spoke to another doctor ,I actually got them to Google it, he has put globus in my notes and gave me some acid reflux tablets .I have been doing the neck exercises about 3 times a day for the last 4 or 5 days and have got a massive improvement from it about 90% better ! Which I can definitely live with, to be honest when I was told that everything was OK and there was nothing sinister that was all that mattered to me ,I'm glad I Googled globus now but I won't be googling anything to do with health again cus like you lot have said, it scares the Crap out of you! 😁 x

Hi meg, that’s really good to know, that sounds really positive!!

I really aught to stick with the neck exercises but I think because I suffer from acid, that is what’s causing my globus feeling in the first place.

If you don’t suffer from acid I wouldn’t take anything for it, my gastroenterologist said when you go on them and then come off them you can get awful rebound acid ( I did!)

When my globus first started I wasn’t getting acid but then it developed once I started worrying more!!

Yes, no googling!!! So pleased you are improving 😊

Hello, guys! I really put it short and direct as same as you i'm also suffering from globus sensation, which i knew after several visits to ENT specialist for 3 months. Anyway, the problem with me is that along with sensation there is some build-up saliva back in my throat which i talked about to doctor. but, he took that easy & told me it's nothing. i know i'm gonna defeat globus in some period of time. however, I'm quite uneasy about the build-up saliva & maybe it's the real cause behind anxiety, GERD,,,,,that you knw. so, any guys here who knows about this thing? Really, It would be great relief. Thank you!

I also  suffered for two years with Globus sensation. I had Nissen surgery thinking acid reflux was the cause.  Globus only got worse. ENT had no answers either as all my tests were normal.  I finally went to the chiropractor. He asked me many questions, adjusted my neck, and I had immediate relief. Eight hours later I was completely symptom free!! He said there are nerves in the neck that affect the muscles in your throat.  Thank God! After 2 years I am well!

I suffer with my neck anyway but I’ve been to osteopath and no relief so I’m my case I think it’s definitely acid as it’s daily 😒 great for you though!! 😊
