My story and how I beat globus sensation

Posted , 164 users are following.

I made a promise that if I got better I would share my story on this discussion board in the hope that I may help someone. All the posts on here were a great comfort to me when I was experiencing this awful condition.

It all happened about 8 weeks ago. I was in the theatre and just sat down to begin the show when I ate a sweet normally, took a sip of water normally and afterwards felt like I was having difficulty swallowing. My mouth went super dry and I felt like a had a lump in my throat and my tongue was enlarged (it wasn't). I thought perhaps I was having a reaction to something so before the interval I had to leave and get out of there. I felt complete terror and danger and thought I was going to die. My husband was worried and took me to A&E. I couldnt breathe properly but was not wheezing. I felt like someone was strangling me, standing on my neck and I was in a complete panic that came out of nowhere. Apparently I had a panic attack or severe anxiety episode. Well, I didnt believe this diagnosis because I had over the years suffered from anxiety on and off and bouts of low mood but even when I have faced the most difficult times in my life, never have I had a panic attack so wondered why on such a happy day I would develop this. Anyway the initial attack was only the start of my problems, I was told the symptoms of my choking sensation would go away within a few hours. It didnt. This made it worse and I was not so easily going to put this down to stress as most things seem to be these days. I went to my GP who said I did seem to have some swelling in my neck and ordered me an ultrasound. As I couldn't wait 3 weeks for the paperwork to come through I saw an ENT consultant privately who put a camera up my nose and down my throat and said everyhing looked perfect and likely to be globus sensation which is common when experiencing panic attacks and anxiety. This only gave me some comfort because I was still feeling these awful symptoms. After the 4th week I had scan and this showed nothing. My thyroid was perfect, which I suspected may be the issue due to my high thyroid antibodies, although I knew I had normal thyroid function. This was also some comfort. I was suffering, and it was really really getting me down. Having to get up every day and go to work was so hard and I was so anxious I was not sleeping or eating well. I thought I would have it forever. After a while I started to think, well this isn't going to kill me as time has proven, its not getting worse or better so I need to start trying things to see if anything helps. I also had a strange crawling sensation in my neck not on top of my skin but underneath - hard to explain. Also when I put chin to chest I felt like the part between my neck and chin was swollen. I tried breathing exercises, hot water bottles, hot baths, drinking red wine, taking NSAI's, drinking loads of water, trying to eat better, sleep better, watching funny films but nothing worked. I then found a couple of websites online suggesting a very simple neck exercise to do many times throughout the day and specifically for globus sufferers. I started to do this and over a week the symptoms started to ease and has got better and better to the point that its only 5% there. The most important part is to make sure your shoulders are always down and pushed back as far as you can. No hunched shoulders or it won't work. Then carefully, with mouth closed, ease your neck back as far as it can go, all the time looking up to the ceiling. You should be able to feel yourself stretching your neck. It may make you cough a little. Then roll your head a little to left and right and centre. It probably won't work the first go. you have to do it many times a day over a week or so.

My GP said that panic attacks can cause a lot of problems in the neck, real tension and muscles, and other structures and a horrid sensation of a lump in your neck. I have to understand now that this is the cause.

Apologies for the long post but it's a long story.

I hope it helps someone.

Good luck to you all and take care of yourselves.

Hi chippy. My wife is currently suffering from what I now know as globus sensation. It is getting her very depressed and to make matters worse she is 3 months pregnant. She is suffering a lot. It is not good. I am hoping you get back to me on this. I just have a question on the neck exercises. Just need a bit more detail please. Do you stand up when doing these stretches? So just confirming you stand up and with your shoulders back and down just look up at the ceiling and tilt head to the left a bit? I'm very happy your better. I hope my wife can get better too

I am so glad to find this forum I was starting to think I was going mad! Gone through similar experiences but 3 months on and no further forward despite numerous cameras put where you'd rather they weren't! I don't believe I have relux but have been given for it. Also given medication for Lucas drop which I don't believe I have. Final diagnosis is stress induced 4th appointment booked to see doctor on Friday. So fed up and no sign if let up x

Hi Gail, sorry to hear you are going through this too, it’s a nightmare isn’t it, I’ve had it nearly a year now, still having various tests, just waiting for results on ph monitoring tests which I found hideous!!

I do think mine is caused by reflux as my oesophagul sphincter is slightly loose, I also suffer with stress 🙄 this has made it worse!!

I hope you can find an answer soon, sorry I can’t be of any help

Oh Gail, so sorry to hear you are fighting this too! As you search for answers, I wanted to jump in and share that Terrie's recommendation of getting off acid food and drink and using apple cider vinegar really helped inspire me to redouble my efforts. I started taking the equivalent amount of ACV she suggested, in capsule form and before each meal. This has really been a helpful addition to me and may help you too! My globulus hasn't come back even though my reflux still is an issue and hopefully continues to improve even though it's slow! I agree with Katie too, that anything you can do to relax and reduce your stress will likely help a ton as you search for answers. Know that you can beat it! Good luck!!

I hope you find answers soon too, Katie! 💕 When I was at my absolute worst, it was scary - and so helpful to find this forum and to learn from others including you! You are always so level headed and there are so many good people posting on here. I feel drawn to stay tuned and to help however I can. Even though my globulus hasn't come back, I think about it every day with my seemingly related issues! I'm on the right track but it's a tough track. Not sure if you've tried the ACV Terrie recommended as part of her suggestions but you might find help with the capsules. I agree with her and think that and getting rid of acid food and drink are so worthwhile! Good luck and hugs to you! 🍀💖🙏

It’s hard work to try and stay positive isn’t it but we must as it’s a viscous circle!!

I’m actually reading ‘ the acid watcher diet’ and he doesn’t recommend ACV 😢 he said it releases pepsin in the throat so I’ve had to stop for now, it’s odd as I took ACV for years before I even got this problem.

I’m going to try very hard to concentrate on breathing and meditation.

I have already cut out acid forming food and drink... life is really very boring now 😂

      Take care to you all!

Katie, can I ask what ph tests are as this is a'll very new to me.

      Cheers

    • Posted

Please can I ask where do you buy the ACV tablets from? Also are you still taking reflux medication? I don't suffer with indigestion or heartburn but the consultant said you don't always have those symptoms with silent reflux. Sometimes I have mucous is that common with globus. Sorry for the all the question but I've had so many diagnosis yet none of the doctors seem that concerned, despite the fact I'm finding it quite upsetting. Thank you for listening

    • Edited

If you look up oesophagul 24 hour ph monitoring it will show you, I basically had a tube inserted in to my oesophagus and stomach for 24 hours to see how much acid is coming up.

I do feel phlegm in my throat, I have the feeling that I need to keep clearing it.

You might not have acid at all! It might just be globus caused by stress or anxiety! What are your actual symptoms? Have you had an endoscopy? Sorry if I’ve already asked!!

A lump in my throat and sometimes phlegm only relief is when I sleep or eat and drink. Has the camera down the back of my nose and the consultant said there was nothing worrying everything looked healthy. Next step was endoscope but I saw the next doctor whodidmt believe this was necessary because he believed I had globus. I have been given relux medication was has had no bearing on lump in throat therefore he thinks it isn't caused by reflux he believes it is stress induced. Going back tomorrow to talk about how to reduce stress and see if this works.

Hi Katie! Yes, it is so frustrating! I'm really glad you are getting a handle on the acid/alkaline balance. I had never heard of that with the ACV in the throat, so thank you for sharing! I just had a concern with being careful of my teeth which is why I went to the capsules. I do still take most of the protocol I shared including digestive enzymes and HCI with pepsin at each meal that has protein - 100% of the time (I won't eat anything without them). Everyone is different though, and I'm sure you'll figure out what works best for you. 👍 I completely understand what you're saying about a boring diet. I was living there for quite a while too! For a while even things that weren't actually spicy seemed spicy to me! It was so wild until my body started healing, and took a while of being obsessive with all the details, and now mild things don't have the unbearably spicy taste anymore. I've been reading about people saying sleep on the left side to help acid/silent reflux and others saying sleep on the right. I'm going to change it up tonight and see if that helps

more. 😛 Continuous improvement! Best wishes for speedy healing! 💕

Hi Gail! Absolutely! I buy the only ones I saw that are capsules since I think I digest caps better than tablets. They are from natural factors, and I got them from vitacost. Terrie had mentioned in another post on this thread that she found relief with having a certain amount before each meal. I did the math and that equaled 4 of my caps so that's what I do. I'm not taking prescription since I had heard about the trouble some have with those and wanted to try something more natural first. Totally have to do something to get better and I think there are probably many good routes though! You may ask your dr about the ACV and if it's safe to try with your meds since you'd like to heal and (if you want to) wean off the prescription. My GERD and reflux continue to improve and globulus hasn't come back. 🎉 I'm eating much more broadly now, and continue the protocol while always looking for continued improvement as I keep healing. It is a slow process...🙊 You can research online and to get you started, glutamine, DGL and aloe were some of the other helpful things I found. I'd also take baking soda in water when I had a concern, and every night before bed for a while when needed too! Earth clinic has a GERD protocol that I found very helpful. You could search it online. But, I'll say I don't know if anything interacts with the prescription so definitely ask your dr while you're taking it. Every situation seems to be some different and I'm sure you'll figure out what works well for you. Healing isn't a quick process but getting the globulus to go away is the first step and it's so monumental. The stuff with meals as well as the powdered glutamine in water and baking soda were so helpful in the early stages for me personally, along with drinking a ton of water and being so careful that nothing inflammatory (soda, coffee, spice) crossed my throat. I wish I had know about ACV caps then but I didn't. It's so frustrating and tough at first but you can do it! 👍 Happy healing and please feel free to let me know if you have any questions. Best of luck, Gail! 💕

Ack...I sent a long reply that's waiting to be moderated.🙈

ACV capsules is the only kind I found in capsules, natural factors and I got them online 💕

    • Posted

Let's see here! I've tried to reply twice and both times it says waiting for moderator...! I got the capsules online and there's only one brand I found that has capsules so you'll want to do a google search since maybe I'm not allowed to share the brand or site I found them on. 🙈 I feel like I digest caps better than tablets especially at this point! Not sure if they're ok with your meds since I'm not taking meds, so you might ask your doc. If you have other questions feel free to let me know. I realize it's so frustrating! Wishing you all the best, Gail! 💕

I do have reflux and GERD by the way, and continue to get better and healthier, and the scary globulus has not come back! 🙏 Healing is a slow process but you will get there too!! I've mentioned the GERD protocol at earth clinic in another post and you can search for that online if you think it may help you. I wish I had known about ACV caps when I was at my worst. Some of what I think helped the most then was glutamine in water as it soother my throat, DGL, manuka honey cough drops, and baking soda in water as needed. Best of luck to you! 🍀

Did you say you had an endoscopy to find out the reasons for your acid?

I read that you should sleep on your left but my consultant said the right 🙄

I really don’t want to take medication or have an operation but if my sphincter is loose I don’t teally know what I can do.

Really good you are getting better!! 🌸

    • Posted

Hi Katie! You might want to search this forum for John03683 if you haven't already. I thought I was strengthening my likely-loose judging from symptoms but not verified by endoscopy sphincter with breathing exercise, glutamine and ACV. According to John, there's really only one good method he's found for strengthening it without surgery and it involves a carbonated water exercise. I didn't realize this and I'm glad you brought it up as it could explain why I got a ton better but can't get all the way healed!!! Different people in the thread also discuss pepto bismol for getting some relief from globus, etc!

I'm going for a ton of blood work in the morning as I'm seeing a new holistic dr soon, but am going to pick up carbonated water after that and try John's exercise. It's worth a shot!

Also I read that sleeping on the left Is better for digestive issues but the right puts less pressure on the heart. How about good for digestion and heart? 🙈

Hugs to you! We will get better! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏

    • Edited

Hiya! I did actually see his post about the bicarbonate of water when I first started suffering, not sure I was doing it right, will look it up again! We aren’t meant to have carbonated drinks with reflux so think I gave up on the fizzy water!!

I had m results of my ph studies yesterday, I am having episode of acid but mainly non acid reflux but my oesophagus contractions are not sufficient whatever all that means, it left me all a bit down again, so fed up about it all, just want to cure it naturally but feeling more negative about it all, you sound like a very positive person so I’m sure that’s helping you!! I need to change!!

Yes sleeping.... well I think I’ll alternate between sides and however my body likes to sleep 😂

      Have a great day 🌸

    • Posted

Hi Katie! Yes it is so easy to get discouraged. When I had the globulus I knew I had to stay positive and tried to pray and meditate and be more zen 😉 But it was so tough because the lump was all I could think about. Then, I fought hard to stay positive because even as a positive person it was AWFUL and so top of mind. I know you can relate. Maybe you should hold off on the fizz til you see improvement with the globulus? I think one should come before the other, but you know your body best! I read about pepto bismol on that other forum I mentioned, and about a year ago, Jonathan57679 was telling CCinCal how to use pepto, and she had improvement in the lump in about a day and was amazed. Definitely something to look into it you haven't. I didn't know about pepto when I had mine but put a ton of soothing things down there and intensely to try to make a change. It was all I knew how to do because I was so scared, so I tried everything possible even though most of it is gross. I didn't care 🙊 Now though, I do think ginger and even ginger ale are helpful even though ginger ale has fizz. You're right though, I wasn't thinking about globulus with the fizz, only the loose sphincter exercises. John also says not to use the fizzy water if you have hiatal hernia.

I hadn't heard of that with the oesophagus so I looked it up. Basically, if you think this is correct it seems you want to improve your esophagul motility. By searching natural ways to do this I ended up on  paleohacks and saw a post by giantess. She talks about improving the gut health in order to improve esophagul motility and how it is a process (we are all too familiar that everything is a process at this point). (To be continued)

    • Posted

      Continued!

She says glutamine restores the gut lining and allows an increase in mucus which is helpful for motility!!! She also recommends DGL.

Honestly, I have not been consistent with either of those lately, and wonder why I've plateaued. 😁 The glutamine powder in water was soothing to my throat but I don't like any powder in water and it is annoying so I stopped being intense about it. My mistake!

Giantess says lay off probiotics until you do enough so gut is healed, otherwise it's like building a mansion in a ghetto. Ha. 🙈

She also talks about the importance of gelatin. I've read that before but haven't done anything about it and will add to my list. I think my connective tissues need extra support in general and am healing from an injury so taking collagen but sounds like gelatin is similar but for the gut. Clearly we all need better gut health. It is not just you, so never feel that way when you get news!  💖 Giantess says by having glutamine you can get stomach pains the first few goes but keep going and don't be discouraged, try it for at least a month. She started noticing the first changes in motility and overall gastric improvement in about 3 days. She also says it helped her reflux, and this is a good jarring reminder for me to get back on the glutamine wagon. I'm not sure I noticed anything major in 3 days, but I also started out with smaller doses and let my body adjust. I worked up to about a gram per day total most days, spread out if it's that much, which is what giantess recommends too. Personally, starting out slow is what tends to work better in general in my world!

Hope this helps a little and that you have a great day, Katie!

Hello! Thank you so much! That’s such a lot of information and really helpful!! I thought last night if my oesophagul motility was not great maybe it was a neurological problem, was feeling rather fed up yesterday with it all! That sounds positive that it’s controlled by how the gut is working, is that right? I’ll look it up!

My lump feeling went a month or so ago now so all I’m left with is a feeling of phlegm that needs to be cleared and gurgling in my throat when I swallow!

I did try the fizzy water and I didn’t feel the need to burp, typical!!

My stomach obviously needs to heal, years of rushed eating, not breathing properly ( stress!) and drinking beer 😒

I will definitely try the glutamine!!

I’ve got collagen! I used to take until a friend told me it can contribute to cancer so I stopped!!!

I’m speaking to a nutritionist on Monday who specialises in digestion, we will get there!!! I need my sphincter to tighten up naturally!!!

Thank you so much, you’re very kind 😊

Oh I have actually stopped prebiotics as my problems all seem to start when I went on a really strong one!!!! Now every time I take my normal one my acid gets worse!!

Sorry! What website did you look on as I don’t know what to put in! X
    • Posted

Yes! It's paleohacks. To get back there the easiest way in DuckDuckGo I searched: paleohacks + increase gut motility

Then look in the comments 👍

    • Posted

Wow. I went on a really strong one and had awful issues so I stopped. They say to keep pushing through it and I wasn't about to. So I've been taking a regular one and  going to lay off it for a while and see how it goes!

    • Posted

Oh my, you are singing my song! Years of stress, not breathing properly, rushed eating for sure! Add in my thyroid issue which could be a factor and voila! Yes, you're absolutely right that it's all about the gut, including the motility issues which are probably far too common!

Definitely do your own research on collagen as I've never heard of it being carcinogenic. I take powder mixed in coconut yogurt. You can mix it in water if you use a shaker bottle so it's not lumpy. vital proteins. It is a blue tub.

Yes to glutamine! 😛 I'm so glad your globulus went away! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

That is so awesome and is such a huge step to getting back to feeling better! On breathing, I forget to breathe sometimes and that can't help anything! 🙊

I've never heard of a nutritionist who specializes in digestion. That is awesome! Good luck! Please share if you find anything worthwhile. Rooting for you!! 💥

    • Posted

Oh I’ve got collagen in a green pot, green lakes! I’ll start using again to heal the stomach!

Yes I often forget to breath so I do think years of not using my diaphragm properly has made the sphincter weaker.

      I take slippery elm too.

Just need this period of my life to be gone, it’s been a year now.

I drank the fizzy water again and no burp, what’s going on 🙄

Yes I’ll let you know re nutritionist!!

    • Posted

Found it!!! Thanks so much, will get back on the gelatine( I’ve got the one she recommends!) and I’ll look into l glutamine 😀

I just remembered about, and took, tropical papaya enzymes. They do help after a meal, but I don't know if they're healing or just help with symptoms. Whatever works, right?! 😄

I also take 2 digestive enzymes after my meal, not sure if they’re doing anything! Papaya ones sound good!! 😋

Hi Susan, I do take seaweed capsules would that be the same?

Mine I think must be to do with my acid 😟 I’m speaking to a nutritionist to see if I can get this sorted naturally without needing an op or medication 😐

I used to pop all sorts of supplements but they have fillers in them to bind them together plastic capsules are not good for me either, I try the acv vinegar but i think it makes me worse, have you tried andrews liver salts ??? Also go on earth clinic click on remedies and get iodine up most people are raving about it, what I would really love though is to actually speak to someone with this condition if for nothing else but a supportive calming chat  ???? Hi there, I take seagreens, they don’t have any fillers which is good but not sure how much iodine is in them, I know you can get with added iodine but I worry too much can cause thyroid problems 🤔

So interesting! I have lugols in a drawer at home. I'm really going to have to break that out and see if a little bit makes a difference. I am hypothyroid. I try so many different things on and off and end up forgetting about some of them. 🙈 It's a lot to keep track of as I'm sure you can relate. Thank you for mentioning it!

Ginger ale has caramel in it if its just the normal one from the shop I used to drink it and got mucus like crazy

      Hi Katie

On earth clinic it says the japanese eat average of 14mg iodine in diet per day and that 2 drops of lugols in half a glass water juice is 12.5mg, not very much in seagreens from what I am reading, why dont you try a visit to a chinese practitioner mine didnt prescribe anything might try a different one, oh and quavers crisps go dowm my throat great no probs

    • Edited

I'm from the United States! Where are you from? I've never heard of liver salts before! Interesting that you say that about ACV though I'm sorry to hear that. I got concerned for my teeth too and that's why I take the capsules before each meal instead of the liquid.

You're right, just regular Seagrams. It has caramel color and high fructose corn syrup both. Not healthy drink by any stretch, but it does help settle my stomach. I probably should have baking soda instead of ginger ale realistically!

      Hi Ka

See if you can get the salts they are for nausea and upset stomach, they contain magnesium sulphate, citric acid and sodium hydrogen carbonate you can take it 3 times a day, what about lemonade instead, I am from the uk

      Take care

You can get seagreens with extra iodine, not sure how much, I’ll look into it! Did you say the iodine helps with acid?

Cambridge isn’t near enough to me, if I looked at the right website one of the sessions for a beginner lasts 10-12 hours 😱 think that’s a bit much!!!

I did look at some movement and breathing classes, they have one in Lewis so may look into that 😊

Definitely need to do meditation or yoga, I was watching “100 years younger and it really helps the brain, I need that 🤪

      Hi Katie

On earthclinic somebody said it cured them in 3 days, when you have a reflux problem your body sends extra mucus to protect the oesophagus so thats why we feel the need to clear our throat, my ent told me to try and swallow it, the andrews makes me clear some out tho

      Look at this  !!!!

While apple cider vinegar is perhaps the most popular natural remedy in modern times, ACV can also cause severe side effects like anxiety, heart rhythm abnormalities, dizziness, panic attacks and more.Thousands of our readers have found relief from using apple cider vinegar for conditions such as GERD, arthritis, weight problems, high blood pressure, heartburn, PMS, acne, diarrhea, vomiting. At the same time, every person is different. Earth Clinic readers have reported side effects including an increase in acne, decrease in libido, nausea, dizziness, increase in blood pressure, flu-like symptoms, constipation, diarrhea, sleepiness, and swelling.

To avoid side effects from apple cider vinegar, start with less and increase the dose. It is also best to add only one change at a time to your health regiment so that you can monitor its effect on your body. Everyone is different.

Hi Susan, I saw the gastroenterologist today, he agreed that stress is probably not helping so I am going to do meditation, breathing and exercise as I’m desperate to cure this naturally.

When I see the nutritionist I will ask about being tested for iodine Deficiency, I do have a lot of symptoms of it but then I do to a lot of things 😂

Hi Susan, I feel exactly the same 😒 gastroenterologist said he thinks stress is causing me to feel worse, I’m going to try meditation, breathing and exercise first but I can see I’ll end up on medication 😒

I’m seeing the nutritionist at the end of April so I really hope she can give me some answers, I’m doing a stool test to see if an imbalance of bacteria, in a way I hope there is so at least I’ll know why I keep having acid. Frustrating isn’t it  😒

Hey! I think you're right that the deep, diaphragm breathing is helpful for strengthening. It feels like it's helping even though it's not the magic answer... but clearly nothing is. 🙈
