Monica, I'm very newly diagnosed with PMR & GCA, but I do have a background in the dental field (as an assistant, treatment coordinator and office manager).  I'm pretty sure that if your pain is not caused by actual conditions of your teeth... decay, bite issues, malalignment, abscess, gum disease, etc., a dentist will not be able to help.  I think you will still have to deal with this as a vasculitis symptom.  That has been my experience anyway.  All of my mouth/jaw pain was GCA and not dental connected.  Treating the GCA was what has helped my mouth and jaw pain.

However, I should have suggested a dental check up, just to make sure that you don't have anything truly dental causing your teeth pain!

I have vascuitis  triggered by the extraction of three teeth and been on Pred nisone before Methotrexate  I had one big tooth extracted on Friday and would like to think the cause was removed BUT? It feels as if there are firecrackers set off in my mouth as it goes all over and there is no knowing when the pain will come  - or go! Thanks for you messages - appreciated Monica

Such a clear and complete explanation you gave to Monica.

      I have GCA.

Wish you get the expected outcome on the treatment of your PMR and CGA.

I am GCA and had pain with hot/cold on my teeth starting with high levels of pred. Then I lost all sense of taste. Both are still a side effect at 9 mgs of pred. Your symptoms appear a bit different but side effects from pred vary with everyone. I hope some day to taste again and to have no tooth pain!! Hope things improve for you, Ann11195

I had real dental pain and sensitive teeth when I first started pred. As I reduced it went away though, thank goodness.

I'm finding the same. I never take an injection as I have a high pain threshold. My dentist gave me a prescription for toothpaste for the sensitivity. It helps. I don't think you can buy it over the counter.

There are a couple of Canucks on the forum but none I know of in Alberta - though I don't think you will find any recommendations for dentists in Canada anywhere on a UK-based site I'm afraid.

I too had sensitive teeth - but unilke the others at wasn't to do with the pred as it was there before. Sensodyne was the only toothpaste that made any difference. I had a few years where it was very much better, I'd say gone really, but I've had a flare of the vasculitis/PMR over the last few months and it is uncomfortable to eat icecream again  - not that that is going to stop me...
