My Terrible Cyst Story

Hello everyone! If you're viewing this post, you yourself are probably in an exeme amount of pain, or someone you know is. If so, let me just say that I am extremely sorry for everything you've had to endure. I know. It sucks.

?Anyways lets just get to the story. Around a year ago, I was a seemingly healthy thirteen year old girl (fourteen now), when all of the sudden I had this terrible, undescribable pain in my lower right quadrant. I had jumped on our trampoline, and all of the sudden, a sharp pain hit me. I thought it had just been the dairy that I had earlier, considering the fact that I'm allergic to it. That night I spent a good hour or two in the bathroom hunched over the bathtub, praying. It was the worst pain I've ever felt in my life. Suddenly, after what seemed to be a life time, the pain went away. I was relieved, and instantly fell asleep. I dont remember every little detail, but from that point on every day, at least four to five times a day, I'd have terrible pain spells, each lasting around an hour. I had no idea what was happening, neither did my family. We thought it was a stomach bug, or pain from the antibiotics I had taken for strep throat. I continued to live in pain for the next few weeks, without explanation.

?Finally after a few weeks, I knew for sure it wasn't a bug, or some dumb pill. I told my mother calmly that she was to drive me to the hospital. Well, my mom did not not want to pay the $500 fee for going into the hospital, so we got it checked out at our local urgent care. They did some tests on me, and said everything came bak normal, but that they would feel safer if I was sent into the hospital to get my appendix checked. We went over to the hosital, and they got me hooked up. Here is where I'm going to rant. This part will come in play later.

?The hospital claimd that they had done "every test under the sun", and that everything was normal. They sent me home the same day, with the only explanation being a "stomach bug". However, I continued to have pain. Every day, four or five times a day of hour long periods of hell. About two weeks after the first visit, I was using the restroom, when all of the sudden, the pain hit me. Worse than any other time. All hell broke loose. I started crying, I was nauseated, sweating and in terrible pain. I limped to my bed, and started rocking back and forth. I remember that was probably the worst night of my life. My mom stayed up with me the whole night. I tried every position, every remedy. Nothing. It was at about four A.M when my mom got too tired to stay up with me and hobbled back bed. The stress of her leaving me got me so worked up that finally, after eight hours of feeling like I was going to hurl, I finally threw up. The pain was so bad, that it actually made me throw up. That was it for me. I begged my mom to take me to the hospital once again. She kept telling me that they did everything, but I knew that they didn't. I pushed her out the door, and we headed to the hospital once again. They wheeled me in with a wheel chair, and brought me in. The doctor came in completely calm and was looking through my files. And the one thinge said to me was:

"You're fine".

?Um, Excuse me? I am throwing up in front of you, complaining of terrible lower quadrant pain, and not to mention, I AM A FEMALE WITH FEMALE PARTS THAT SHOULD BE LOOKED AT. I swear, I was in and out of that hospital, a second time. I had no hope. I thought that I was dying, that I would never be happy again. For three months I sat in a bed, and didn't leave the house. For three months I wanted to die, because everyone was telling me that this pain was in my head, but I KNEW something was up. I continued with the pain spells, now going on two months. Finally a breaking point occured.

?I don't remember much from this. I think my brain might be blocking it, or I just wasn't fully there. What I do remember though is that another few weeks after the second hospital visit, I woke up one morning, and INSTANTLY the pain came back. worse than the first time, worse than the second time. On a scale from one to ten, the pain was a billion. I started sweating, and feeling nauceous. Keep mind that I haven't eaten for a few days, so my stomach was empty. I was so desperate for the pain to go away that I took the pain pills on an empty stomach, even though I knew I'd throw up, which I did. My mom was a real trooper. Once again, I begged her to take me to the hospital. And thank god she did, otherwise I probably wouldn't be here.

?This is where everything starts getting choppy. I remember being in the bed, and hearing the words I've been waiting to hear for the past three months. They told us that they had forgot to do a pelvic exam. And this, ladies and gents, is why I'm p*ssed. They knew I was an ovulating female. So why didn't they examine the area where I was having pain? Ovarian cysts are one of the most common reasons why women come into the ER, so why was I overlooked? They brought me into the ultrasound room, and boy, was it terrible. I remember crying because they had to push down where the cyst was, not even the morphine they were giving me touched the pain. From that point on, I don't remember. I was drugged up heavily, exhausted, and scared.I had to stay in the hospital for five days, one of which was the first day of my eighth grade year. I was devastated. They diagnosed it as a 5cm ludial cyst, which would go away on it's own within two to three months. Well folks, guess what? They screwed up again. It wasn't until three months after the final hospital visit that we found out it was actually a 5cm DERMOID cyst. And lucky for me, those require surgery! After the third hospitalvisit, I stopped having the pain spells, I was just sore. I recently found out that each of those pain spells was actually killing the ovary little by little, until eventually it stopped working. It wasn't dead but it was all twisted, and devoured by the cyst.

?I will post my surgery experience in a seperate post, but I just needed to get this out of my mind. It is now almost a year later after the experience, and I still cry thinking about it. I like to think of it on the positive side, that I've eperienced an ovarian cyst the way not a lot of others have. I wish all of my fellow cysters (get it? sisters? cysters?... ok) good luck. Thank you for reading.

Oh you poor baby girl! I just want to hug you! Oh my what you went through!

If there's anything I've learned it's ER Drs. blow past 'female' pain. The women here often are told "You're fine" yet they are writhing in pain and can not function. Yet they're are sent home with "it will resolve itself". REALLY??!!

In young athletic women it often shows up after physical activity because of tearing and twisting of adhesions due to the cysts, scarring or endometrial tissue. Horrible, unthinkable pain.

I wish the Drs. would refer women to a gynecologist instead of dismissing them. It's unusual for a woman as young as you but geeze. Letting you suffer like that and not think of that is inexcusable. Severe consequences can occur from neglect like that.

I'm sure your mother didn't think of it but a simple ultra sound on your first visit would have caught it so much earlier.

I hope your surgical outcome story ends well and you will be a spokes woman to others to seek out gynecological expertise.

I dont understand how Nurses and Drs can discharge you when you presented with such pain and symptons. I had the same experience with you I had to pushed my GP for an ultra sound cause he kept saying it is normal female menopause...? I have learned the important to have medical insurance. Once my health is sorted hopefully in August then I will look into to medical insurance .It will cost me heaps I think as I have two health condition at the moment.

I wishh to read your experienced with your surgery.

    Best wishes

Honestly, why are all of these hospitals screwed up!? The doctors should listen to us, we know something is wrong, and any of the symptoms should not be overlooked. I'm sorry to hear you've had a similar experience, no one deserves to go through anything of the sort. Thank you for replying, it's great to have a community!

I feel for those who just suffer because Dr's say nothing is wrong. ..and later got cancer which could have been avoided if proper test is done.

Another way of reaching out to people is YouTube. ..I watch heaps and it helps me to learn more about cysts etc.

I think the best answer is to have medical insurance if we want proper check immediately. ..

When did you have your operation if you don't mind sharing...

      Best wishes
