Myringitis and deafness

hi all, getting a bit worried. Have had an episode of Myringitis and am on treatment with Gentamicin ear drops. Problem began last Monday but I had a sinus problem before that. I am taking anti biotics now for the sinus issue.
Problem is I still can't hear properly in that ear. It is driving me crazy. Off and on still a bit of pain but the hearing issue is the really scary bit of it. I have a droning noise in my ear ....so tinnitus....but very little return of hearing after 5 days of treatment. Anyone else had this type of infection and know what I can expect. Thanks

Hi
6 months ago I had sudden fullness in my right ear after having a congested cold virus and tinnitus also very sensitive to loud noises. Had mri, hearing test, antibiotics, steroids and when to see a ent specialist I have had no improvement and have been told the nerves in my midle ear have been damaged due to the virus and if it hasn't healed by now it's not likely to. Hope this doesn't happen to you 🤐 Tash

Oh dear. Well on my way now to ent. Let's see what they have to say. A week on and feel like I am under water. Ear feels like it needs to pop. Is that how yours feels?

margaret;
Sorry to hear about your issue, but if you had what I had it could take upwards of 9 months till most of your hearing is restored.
Short version. Started out as one night went to bed ok, in middle of night ear pain in one ear and a feeling of fluid build up. Rolled over and went back to sleep. Next morning, both ears sore and 95 % hearing loss. Also had sinus drainage and heavyness in the chest. Next day went to urgent care. Chest infection and dual ear infections. 2 months later, multiple urgent care doctors, mutiple doses of oral antibiotics and even seeing my own Primary care physician I was finally told that my hearing was gone and to except it. I asked for a ENT referral and 2 months later had 90% of my hearing back.
It was never said if it was a BACTERIAL or a FUNGAL Ear infection, but I would believe it was A FUNGAL ear infection, and antibiotics don't work on those. .
If you are seeing an ENT and you have already seen a GP you are doing the right things. Yet if you are not getting the answers you want or feel they are not working in your best interest, see out a different ENT. (Just my opinion).

Ok. Thanks for your input both of you. I haven't had a hearing test yet. I went back to ent yesterday and they said I have to continue droos for 10 more days. Said blisters haven't healed yet. They said I should get my hearing back but let's face it...they don't know for sure. Very fed up with it but living in hope it will come back. They also say drops have totally coated my eardrum and that us one of reasons I can't hear properly. Worried it won't come back.

Hi Sara yes I am happy to tell you my hearing came back fully. I am back to normal...took a time. Much longer than they said. Did you get drops which covered your ear drum ? Think in the end thry were causing the muffled hearing. There was a coating on my ear drum. Eventually worked it's way out.

hi Sara, no I didn't take steroids. I have to say though that I believe sinus issues caused this. I have chronic inflammatory sinus issue (it's all linked to auto immune disease for me, ears always problematic too). So clearing my sinuses helped but I didn't do that with steroid spray. It doesn't work for me. But was given saline nasal spray which worked a treat. Prescribed for me by a good doc it was a sea salt spray. Fantastic. And also had anti biotic treatment. First time I went back it hadn't cleared so had to use the drops for longer. No perforation. But they did a hearing test to establish if there was nerve damage and said no. Said hearing should come back. Seemed to take forever...can' t even remember how long but weeks. So frustrating. Then one day (sorry for gross detail here) felt a 'shifting' inside my ear...thought what is that! A coating of the hardened ear drops came out of my ear. Awful. But god the relief! No more deafness. Did they test your hearing? I am normal now in terms of hearing and dread that ever happening again. My sinus issues are, as I said continuous so I worry it will come back. Horrid and so painful.

See you've had eye inflammation too. Do you have something similar to me?? I've had eye inflammation before too. Auto immune related too.

hi there. Yes the graves is interesting and your symptoms. It is suggestive of something like Lupus to be honest. I have Behcet's syndrome. Similar to Lupus and Sjogren's but distinctive because of specific ulceration which goes with it. The other symptoms all overlap to be honest. I have had the palpitations, eye inflammation, insomnia chronic sinus and ear problems. And more, inflammatory bowel problems. All at the moment are quiet after long treatment I underwent. My most recent problems were pain in my feet and legs which decided to flare up this year. I have been given something called hydroxychloroquine which has settled that and also the sinus issue which is great.
If I were you I'd get an ana blood test done to esr and crp to look specifically at inflammatory markers and possible underlying auto immune issues. It might help. Get a referral to a good specialist who might understand.
and yes always a feeling of fullness in my ears yes. Before the myringitis yes and my hearing went dull and ear started to bleed! Nice. x

My ear was not full prior to the Myringitis but after the bleed happened, and the hearing went dull- I also got a feeling of fullness on that side that sometimes feels worse than other times. Did you experience fullness AFTER the Myringitis as it healed? If so, about when would you say it cleared up? You have been so helpful and I am so thankful.

Yes I know it can be scary but do remember like everything else you can have milder and more aggressive forms of these disorders so bear that in mind. Yes I experienced fullness after the myringitis as it healed. Was a very unnerving condition as it made sounds a bit odd to me as well as being dull and from time to time I'd get a seasick feeling as my hear clicked and cleared and tried to heal. I was very odd. I can't remember the timing to be honest but as much as 6 weeks after the infection before it got back to normal. Maybe longer. I mean weeks. I'd given up hope of getting my hearing back and was just about to ask for another referral to ent when it suddenly came back.
