Mysterious Ankle pain for 1 and a half years with no diagnoses. Continued

In my last post I said I was seeing an orthopedic ankle surgeon. So we drove four hours away for an answer. The doctor is the best in the business in my area and we waited a month to see him.

I was all excited to go. He did a through check of my ankle and checked all my tests that I had had. He sadly told us that he has no idea what is wrong.

No surgey's can be done because he does not see a problem anywhere. And no exploratory surgey can happen because their is no starting point. He apologized and is sending me to thearpy again.

We could tell he felt really bad because I am 14 and in constant worsening pain. He can't even give me different medicine. He is sending me to a different doctors for answers hopefully.

I am becoming discouraged and dispressed. If their is any ideas tell me. Nothing has shown up in MRI's, X-Ray's, Blood work, and steroid injection's don't help. It is nothing with the ligaments, tendons, bones or joints.

I could use ideas, support, and different things to do. I can't keep living like this. Please HELP.

Yes you can keep living. Its times like this we have to think of people worse off than us. There are many. Go to other Drs. Go to a counselor to help you manage ways to get round this. See a counselor asap for support. In the mean time we are all thinking of you . you could ask about alternate therapies like acupuncture. Ask around.

Yes pain management clinic. Ask Dr about it.

Were all here to listen and offer ideas.

Keep your foot up a lot. Get a knee scooter. See how it works for you.

I am so sorry for your pain. Does it help to stay off the ankle? Have you been referred to pain management clinic? I know you want to find cause of pain but you need relief from the pain until then. I am up at 3 AM with pain in my leg from broken ankle. I will pray for you.

Thank you. No I have not been to a pain clinic. It helps al little to stay off the ankle but I am always in constant pain. Some days I cant even walk. I am now earing a special boot when I sleep that keeps my foot from moving and that helps. Thank you for praying.

My husband has the same problem. He's 38 and has been to orthopedists, podiatrists and neurologists. You could try a neurologist, pain management specialist, acupuncture, myofascial massage, PRP therapy(those are stem cell shots). None of that worked for my husband but it's what we wanted to try. He's been in pain for 5 years after an ankle break and all doctors tell

    him there's nothing wrong.

Hi, have you had tests on lumbar back/spine?  A pain mgmt doc, neurologist or ortho spine specialist can diagnose these problems as they do investigative tests for nerve issues in back that cause radiating pain to leg, ankle, feet.  If your not already seeing a pain mgmt specialist (I see your getting steriod injections), I would recommend first as they are more non-invasive and others typically jump to surgery right out of the box.  Which may be what you need, but should always be last resort, especially when dealing with spine.  Just my opinion.

I had ankle surgery due to a break, but feel I am not progressing as should due to front foot pain, inability to bear weight on front of foot.  My ankle seems fine but my foot ... NOT, causing horrible limp and now bad pain in knee, leg & hip as well.  I have many back/disc issues from past so am bringing that up in my appt with OS tomorrow.  Maybe something out of place with all this mess, post op just about 13 weeks now.

I found: Spine dysfunctions associated with foot pain, any dysfunction in the spine that affects the sensitive spinal nerves in your lower back may cause radiating leg pain that extends into your foot.  These conditions commonly include:

    Herniated discs

    Spondylolisthesis

    Lumbar spinal stenosis

Enlargement of the facet joints caused by facet joint arthritis or osteoarthritis (bone spurs)

I have all of the above (yikes) & have had several injections in back over past several years.

Search internet 'CAN ANKLE PAIN BE CAUSED BY SPINE ISSUES' and a bunch of stuff will show up.  See if any relates to you.  You may have already done this but wanted to mention in case not with hopes to help you in your search.  Kindly keep us posted.  My best for answers soon!!

Thank you for support. I have not been put in a pain clinic yet. The steroid injection was quarterzone but it did not help.

Hi Tonya, so sorry that the doctor could not find anything , that is causing your pain. Have they checked for complex regional pain syndrome. Read up on Google and see if your symptoms are the same. It mainly is diagnosed in older people, but has also been diagnosed in teens. Hope you find a answer soon.
