Mystery bruise on back of hand

Posted , 10 users are following.

last night a large port wine coloured bruise suddenly appeared on the back of my hand. In the middle is a white lump like a ganglion cyst. It was not there one minute and then it was. I did not injure myself.... Is this a possible side effect of Prednisilone?

Pit does not hurt... But the White spot is slightly tender. I did think I had sprained my wrist a couple of days before but the feeling of that has disappeared. This is very disfiguring. Anyone have any idea what it could be?

I'm not an expert. I wonder if it may be the start of shingles. The pred apparently makes us a bit more susceptible if we've had chicken pox or shingles previously. For me it was a very quick trip to the doctor for some anti-viral which stopped it developing further than the first blister.

Then again, it could of course be something totally different.

definitely not shingles... the white bump is too big and too deep under the skin between the bones of my 3rd and 4th finger.

The big 'bruise' is a brownish port wine colour now and the white bump is a little bigger.

Christine, the slightest knock, even those we are unaware of, can result in the most amazing of bruises when on steroids.  The steroids can also thin our skin resulting in easy tearing and bleeding.  I used to get through copious amounts of arnica on my bruises.  If the white bump doesn't reduce in the next couple of days, then get it checked out by your GP.

I get purpura which is bleeding under the skin. Port wine colour. In my case they are usually like long scratches, usually on my lower arms. I don't have any white centres though. They tend to itch rather than hurt.

It COULD be a ruptured capillary - but difficult to say without seeing it. Pred makes capillaries in particular very fragile and that is why we bruise easily.

I have just found the same thing on my hand.  I do not know where or why.  If you find out about yours are any advise please let me know.   Mine is a little sore and my thumb is a little tender.  The white knot I a little hard and the bruise is looking a little better.  Just strange.

I just got something similar yesterday. Did you find out what it was? Did it go away?

mine just dissapeared as mysteriously as it came. I agree that Pred makes skin and vessels etc very frail and tender...even after you stop taking it. I gave it up around Christmas. I am just beggining to be able to move around in bed for the first time in 3 years. Now I have blisters and bed sores on my hips. I am covered in blister plasters hoping it wont get any worse. You cant win with this darn condition. I am sure I contract more injuries in bed asleep than anywhere else.
