Mystery Knee Popping

My two year old daughter has a mystery popping knee since birth. Its only in one knee. Its very loud (but not like a knuckle crack) much louder like a snapping noise. You can physically see her knee change shape and deform. Its like the bone that joins the knee or something in the knee is moveing side to side. It doesnt cause her any pain however it occasionally gives way when walking or running. It happens daily however seems to happen more when she is upset and crying and tenses her leg or when she moves her foot sometimes.

Does anyone have any ideas what this could be?

You should take your daughter to a paediatric orthopaedic specialist. Her bones are growing and you want to check if this is something that can self-correct or if she will need any sort of treatment. Hope she will be ok. Young children can be so worrisome when they can't express themselves properly. At least, as you say, she's not in pain. Good luck.

She needs to see the orthopedic doctor. I had the same thing with my knee twisting in place. Seemed that I had a torn inside ligament. Inside meaning the inseam of the leg side. It took a whole year for me to convince the doctors of it. I had so much metal in my leg that no test would show this issue. Other than me screaming (sort of) at them saying trust me on this. With so much twisting (it took a year to convince the doctors of the problem) it wore out the knee so it had to be replaced. I asked the doctor.... "so how was that ligament?" He said "It wasn't doing anything for you".

That was the 2nd fake knee for that leg. I had a double knee replacement back in 2007. I broke my femur falling on grass in the yard in 2017. They put a rod in. That's when I started having the ligament problems. That doctor did not check around for other injuries from when I fell. Seemed my ligament wasn't connected. I told him when I was in ER right after the fall, that my knee had hit the ground and i was concerned that something let go at that time. My femur was broken across the bone. Also I had just had thumb arthoplasty 4 days earlier and didn't want to hit my soft cast into the ground when I fell so I opted to let the knee hit the ground first. (BIG MISTAKE).

Please take her to the doctor. Could be a ligament, could be a defect in the knee somehow since she's so small, or she injured it when you had your head turned away. I hope she gets all better.

It could be her kneecap dislocating. When I was in hospital last year with my first TKR there was a 17 year old who had just had surgery for this problem that she'd had all her life. You need a proper diagnosis though, so see a doctor now. It's too important to ignore.
