Nail Bed Laceration

Hello!

I've clumsily cut through my thumbnail with a knife whilst working. With this on-going pandemic I'm weary of seeking a medical practitioner unless absolutely necessary, and am looking for all your opinions...

Photo provided is approx 24 hours after sustaining injury.

No swelling or hematoma currently present.

Nail is not loose.

Painful only when using thumb or applying pressure to area, but far from debilitating.

Main concern is impeding the regrowth process of the new nail, or setting myself up for an ingrown nail. Does an injury of this calibre require removal of the nail completely to ensure proper healing?

Will the new nail growth naturally push this laceration forward?

Appreciate any responses in advance.

That looks very sore. At the moment nobody will be able to tell you how it will heal but being a very straight clean cut it will probably just grow out like a normal nail. The nail doesnt need removal. Just keep it clean and watch out for any signs of underlying infection like pus or throbbing, and if it become very red and the redness spreads into your hand then you need treatment.

Most doctors would take the option of Just wait and see.
