Definitely don't put plaster or anything like that on it. It needs to breathe to heal correctly. It looks like the infection killed some of your nail. Until it can fully grow out, it will be visible. If there's still signs of infection, you may need antibiotics, so keep an eye on it.

If that redness at the base of your nail starts to creep up the finger towards your hand then you may need oral antibiotics.

No, dont try cutting the base of the nail that could introduce more infection, just trim the top of the nail as normal and wait for it to grow out .

The base of the nail may start to catch on clothes etc so if that is the case just cover with a light plaster but try to leave it as much open to the air as possible.

thank you i have a antibiotic cream which i am putting on 3 times a day, i wish the dr had given me the oral antibiotics in the beginning and it might not have got this bad πŸ˜•

i think i will have to cover it for work so it wont catch and then just let it air when i am at home

its going to take a long time to get back to normal isnt it

It depends on how fast your nails grow. I'd take Biotin in the meantime to increase how fast they grow, if you're not allergic. Always ask your doctor or just a pharmacist. Ten thousand mcg of Biotin should be sufficient. I take 20,000 mcg, but I have a lot of medical issues that require a higher dose. It will likely take a minimum of 6 months to fully grow out. It could take longer though. You may always have a small deformity at the base IF it's changed the tissue of the nail bed. So, please watch carefully for any redness, swelling, heat or color changes. That way you can get on antibiotics before more cosmetic damage is done.

Otherwise, it's just going to look odd for a while. As it grows out, it'll probably start to look more like a hole in the middle of your nail bed. Don't let it freak you out. Nails are basically made of hair, keratin, etc. They protect the skin underneath. So, despite looking a little scary, a hole won't be as scary as it looks. If the hole is large, they may have you cover it for protection during work, if needed.
