Naltrexone/Nalmefene (Selincro)/The Sinclair Method Hints and Tips

Posted , 64 users are following.

Since many of you are now either using, or considering using, naltrexone or nalmefene (Selincro) as per The Sinclair Method, I recently wrote the following short 'hints and tips' article that provide a guide to working with the medication, therefore helping to ensure the method is as smooth as possible for you.

A second link is also included at the end of the article, specifically for those in the UK.  Hopefully, this will help you navigate requesting a consultation and assessment from the NHS, to see if this medication might be suitable for you.

Many thanks, as always, to Paul Turner for fact-checking this article with me, and also to our moderator for pre-approving the link!

    hi !

I have been on Naltrexone for almost a month now and it is not working for me. i am a daily drinker ; usually a bottle of wine at least at night. I really want to curb my drinking and worried about my health.

I am thinking of getting off Naltrexone . Should I stay on it longer? Is it normal that it would take longer for the Naltrexone to work? if anyone has similar experience , I would be so appreciative to hear what their experience was like with Naltrexone.

    thank you in advance .

The treatment as a whole can take 6-8 months to fully extinguish your urges to drink.

As long as you are taking your naltrexone an hour prior to drinking, and not skipping pills or not waiting the time, then you are good. The science will take care of itself over the coming months. The tablet will do 70% of the work, and the other 30% is you helping it by taking steps to interrupt your drinking after the first drink.

If you are not doing anything to try help it along, then it becomes similar to taking a diet pill but keep on going to McDonalds every night - the pill is doing it's thing, but the habit of eating McDonalds every night needs to be tackled too.

Start to introduce measures to take you out of the habitual bottle a night scenario - alternate with non-alcoholic drinks, eat a mint of a piece of liquorice between drinks etc etc. There is no need to keep drinking a bottle of wine every night, and with the 'thrill of the chase' blocked by the naltrexone, that leaves you with the habitual drinking to tackle.

Stay compliant, actively work with the tablet by making some small changes to the way you drink (ie don't expect the pill to do all the work) and the two will come together to reduce your drinking and then, eventually, extinguish your urges or need to drink altogether.

      Make sense?
