Naproxen for lower back pain and shooting leg pain?

Posted , 8 users are following.

I twisted the right side of my back in the gym which has led to severe pain in my lower back (right at the bottom of the spine) and shooting pains down my right leg. It actually hurts more to sit down than stand up.

The Doctor diagnosed a muscle spasm and gave me 500mg Naproxen.

After taking 3 in two days all I feel is sickness and no pain relief at all!

Are they meant to reduce the inflammation / pain gradually?

At the moment I'm taking Neurofen with them so I can walk!

I'm very disappointed in your doctor. Did you tell him/her that you had pain radiating down you leg? He should have given you some muscle relaxers at least. Unfortunately it sounds like you have a pinched nerve and until you get that corrected it may stay that way, I would ask for muscle relaxers and also put ice on your back. Some people will tell you heat, but I feel that this early in the problem ice will help with the inflamation. If you don't get relief in the next month I would suggest you see a physical therapist. You don't necessarily have to wait that long, I just think if it were me, I would want to give this therapy some time to see if it would work before I spent money on a PT, but it's your call. And that last sentence made it sound like I don't think much of PT's and that is not the case. I think they can do awsome work. So please utilize a PT if you find that you can't get this pain under control.

I herniated my L5/S1 3 months ago and was on Diclofenic and Diazapam for a while and moved to Naproxen and Co-Dydramol after a week.

It it took me 6 weeks to get rid of th heavy Sciatica with stretch based physiotherapy.

I have now flatlined on recovery and also sitting is practically impossible. To the extent, I'm standing at work and lying down as soon as I get home.

Have just added another physio and a postural alignment specialist to my team in the hope that this will help

    all the best !

With all the medicine your doctor has put you on he is still not put you on an actual muscle relaxer. Diazepam is a benzo it is not a muscle relaxer. I know a lot of doctors like to use it that way but it is not a true muscle relaxer. I like Zanaflex the only problem with it is I can't work on it you can't function on it take it and go to bed. But it does a heck of a job. So what I do is I take Baclofen during the day and then Zanaflex at bedtime. Or if I'm really hurting and I could be home I will take a Zanaflex I just plan on not going out after I take them. I'm really sorry to hear that three months of physical therapy hasn't fixed the problem but unfortunately that is not a surprise. With your kind of injury it's likely that take a lot more than that and you may never get to the point where totally without paying. And it's far as sitting welcome to my world. I bought myself three cushions. There's special very thick cushions. They're wonderful. I have one for my car and in my house. The one for my car I take with me to restaurants or other places I go to. I've also been known to use the cushions that you get for kitchen chairs. Thick ones of those work pretty good too. I'm sorry I don't have any other suggestions for you. It might be time for you to search for a pain management doctor. It's my understanding that Gabapentin is good for that type of pain. But I've also heard bad things about Gabapentin. What I've heard is that it affects the memory. I personally have not used it I don't have any radiating pain well it doesn't make it all the way down my leg just a little ways. Good luck on your pain journey.

I had sciatica years ago form a auto accident suffered many years . Then heard about an injection from a papaya enzyme helped the disolve tissue leaking from the disc on the nerve in the back causing sciatica. It's not done anymore .

However some people are findinging relied from Etanercept injections also on this forum also do search and on utube.ask you spine specialist what right for you.

I sincerely hope you are sorted by now as this is an older thread but can I just say you shouldn't ever take Neurofen or any other antiimmlamatory with Naproxen.  You should be alternating with something like co codomal and as others have said, a muscle relaxant.  I hope you have found relief.  I stumbled on this thread as I am in the throes of back pain though mine strangely is lumbar/ upper back.

Have you consulted your doctor before taking Neurofen because before starting any medication you should consult your doctor because there can several bad effects of medicine on your health.

And for your muscle spasm consult your doctor about Soma muscle relaxer because it really helps to control muscle pains effectively. But then again you should be prescribed for it.
