Nasal deviation anyone?

Posted , 3 users are following.

After years of sinus headaches, I finally got a camera up my nose and the result they said was a deviated nasal septum on the left, which made sense as that is where my tooth pain and eye pain comes from. They also mentioned enlarged turbinates and infection from the congestion.

I'm on a waiting list for an op, two years now, however was wondering if anyone has had this and if it made a difference?

Any other tips to beat this awful condition?

Thanks

I have a mild deviated septum, and i was also told tha i have enlarged turbinates which the ent said r enlarged because of allergens. I do suffer also and have been for a couple of years. As of now i have tried to stay clear of surgery, one reason is the ent could not assure me that it would allievate any of my conditions. He put it this way, it could work it could stay the same r get worst(infection) which he could fix with a round of antibotics. Secondly the headaches, he did not know if the surgery would have any affect. So he could not even give me a 50/50 success rate on the surgery.

Right now i am just going with natural things and med's and hoping for the best.

Hi, thanks for that. I know what you mean, surgery doesn't sound that popular, I think I just want to try anything.

The turbinates were enlarged due to allergens? That's interested, I was first diagnosed with non allergic rhinitis so I guess something is making the congestion and then the deviated septum is causing the pain. Do you know what allergens it might be? I did try all the sprays to help with congestion but nothing worked.

It's awful that there's no cure.

I'd also be interested to know as I've got the deviated septum due to brken nose last year in an accident. Ever since I have had sinus probs, pressure over the nose, post nasal drip, awful aches in head and face. It is also the terrible fatigue that bothers me although I have other illnesses which may contribute.

My GP said nothing can be done except managing symptoms but I have tried all the home and otc remedies, lifestyle changes etc. now so I'm going back this week to push for tests, as this is hard to live with along with my other health conditions and I want to be sure of the reason.

I've been taking oregano oil caps which has helped a bit at first but has not lasted long.

And done the washouts with saline and other stuff. But I don't actually have a blocked or runny nose really.

One of my daughters had a broken nose as well (sports injury in her case) and had the diverted septum operated on which helped a while but then the deviation seemed to come back over time. So this makes me think the GP had a point about surgery not being always successful but I do need the dx confirmed for peace of mind as the cause of symptoms like headaches should not be just assumed, I'm sure.

That said, I know the op can work for other people and I'm sure you will be better for it if they have recommended this. Did you also have a CT scan as well as the camera? I really would like to avoid any more CTs if I can, due to the high radiation but they say this is the gold standard for sinus investigations.

    Take care.

Thanks for the reply, it must be awful being told you just have to manage it and secretly I think that's what I will have to do - if the surgery was that effective it would be more popular.

I've had a couple of CT scans but the camera was the best to explain it, otherwise it sounded like I was just moaning about my headaches for nothing.

Your headaches started after you broke your nose? That does sound like the septum caused these?

It's awful. At least we care not alone but just wish there was a cure .

    How are you doing now?

Hope some of the replies are helping.

I have seen GP again but no joy getting a referral, still saying no point, nothing will help blah, blah. I am thinking it is maybe time to get a new GP? Or otherwise I will be paying out for private consult again, already done this for a different condition, which has been dragging out as well. I'm no hypochondriac but it is just futile getting the current GP practice to do anything nowadays. I'm trying to rebuild my life after some bad times and honestly, it is such an uphill journey. Sorry for rant!

I hope you do find good results if stay with surgery. Take care.

Oh no, I don't understand why they're not doing anything?

If your sinus problems started after the nose break then they should surely realise that the deviation / spur needs removing - did you get the camera up the nose to confirm this?

No, nothing. When it happened, I went to A & E for first aid treatment, all they did was patch me up and sent me home. I also broke my front teeth and had mild concussion.  I am really thinking of changing GP now as it should not be so complicated just to get referred.

It is a rubbish condition isn't it?!

      Change drs for sure.

I saw a new one today and he was very sympathetic, I told him all about the pain, especially when it's teeth and that it's the bane of my life!

He gave me a new med for the pain, stronger than codeine which I take everyday.

But more importantly he was livid that I've been on the waiting list for an op for do long, as if you have a septal spur that's the only thing that could help, surgery.

I'm finding out about private too but want to know if it will be worth it!

I will do as it is not the first time of being fobbed off, they rarely even bother to examine you now.

Sounds good to find one that listens. We can always get a consultation privately, even if we go for an op NHS, it can speed things up and another opinion is no bad thing. I do not regret having a private opinion on my gallstones issues, well worth it. I hope your pain relief can help - pain in the teeth can be unbearable.
