Nasal Drip and Nasal obstruction

Posted , 2 users are following.

I have suffered with Nasal obstruction(breathing difficulties)and Nasal Drip(continuous mucus draining down the back of throat)for over 8years and have been prescribed all the usual sprays, anxiety pills, breathing strips, etc.

My latest consultant advises I need an operation to treat a deviated septrum(restricted airway on one side of nose).

I was also told by one consultant that I had collapsed airways due to my age(70) and nothing could be done.

Has anyone had this operation, and if so, did you have relief from nasal drip and improved breathing through the airways.

My quality of life is poor, with low energy during the day and nightime breathing problems that cause me to be awake most of the time.

I am looking to make contact with someone that has had surgery or experiencing the same symptoms as mine.

    Hi,

I don't know much about the specific operation you mention, but, my sister had an op some years back to open the airways for a sinus problem and subsequently was disappointed to find she developed a constant headache as a result. She said she was better off before! Perhaps it's best to investigate any possible side effects first before opting for the op. Also, I have a sinus problem with post nasal drip and I discovered something by chance about a year ago which almost halved the discomfort I was experiencing daily, especially at night when I used to wake up with blocked sinus. I sealed off the air vents on the chimney breast in my bedroom and got immediate relief. They must be sealed thoroughly and likewise, by extension, any other source of dust blowing into the room. As you probably already know, rhinitis is an associated problem and dust can aggravate this. Please let me know if you try this and it benefits you.

Thanks Gerry. I am currently trying to meet someone with the condition and operation. Also having another consultation.

Take on board your advice to check side effects of the operation.

Did read your DIY efforts with the chimney . Are you completely free of

    the Sinusitis and Rhinitis now.

We live in old house with chimneys unused but would have thought you would do sneezing from the dust aspect which I dont, except when moving from warm room into a cold one.

My complaint is also more severe in the winter months which I put down to cooler air which is heavier to breath.

Will post more info when I get it.

    Hi Robin,

I'm currently on a short anti biotic course and spray (Doxycycline caps and Flixotide spray) to try and clear up the remnants. The post nasal drip causes a cough, some days, but my breathing was greatly improved the day I sealed the chimney vents. I never really had much of a sneeze, like you would expect with dust. If youv'e got still open unused fireplaces in your house, then I highly recommend you seal them up, even just the one in your bedroom. When you think about it, the chimney duct harbours a variety of decomposeing matter ( even if it has been professionaly cleaned) which is then blowing constantly into your room. A bit of suitably cut MDF of plywood placed over the fireplace and sealed with silicone temporarilly would give you a chance to guage for yourself...and dont forget any vents. I haven't woken up breathless in the night since I did it. Same for you, I hope.
