Good afternoon all. I want to wish you all a ** Happy Father's Day ** Was with my 2 sons this morning. My daughter-in-law made breakfast for us all and now they had to work I'm just going rest at home. I know we talk a lot about different procedures and what would be best. So I said let's get off the procedure for now and I look up Natural Medicine for the Prostate. There are about 10 that I have come across. I was just wondering if any of you guys have tried any of them. There are only a few that give you some good information and they have had trails on them. Not as much as the procedures but I guess there not much money in them. The first one is Pygeum ( African Plum Extract ) It can be used to treat BPH and Prostate cancer. It can help with inflammation, pain, kidney disease. And a few others. It also said to increase sexual desire.. Number 2 is Cernilton ( Rye Grass Pollen ) This one was the only one that said that it reduce the over all size of the prostate. Last is Lycopene. This is in many of the red vegetables that you can get. Eating these thing will help with your prostate and also will help with heart disease and also prostate cancer. There are other thing out that but I have never heard of the first 2 we have talk about other's. Just wondering if these things would work and if they would help men not have as many surgery. Well one more day going back to my daughter's to watch the kids while they go on vacation. I will have fun with them. Well I guess only god knows. I wish you all good health and a long life Ken

At the urging of my son, a year or so ago, I stopped doxazosin and tried pygeum. Within a few days my symptoms were worse. I stuck with it for 2 weeks and then went back to doxazosin. My symptoms cleared up in a couple days. Here's a quote from a survey of studies done from 1996 to 2000: "The literature on P. africanum for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia is limited by the short duration of studies and the variability in study design, the use of phytotherapeutic preparations, and the types of reported outcomes. However, the evidence suggests that P. africanum modestly, but significantly, improves urologic symptoms and flow measures. Further research is needed using standardized preparations of P. africanum to determine its long-term effectiveness and ability to prevent complications associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia."
The problem with supplements, being unregulated by the FDA, is you really have no idea what you're getting. That said, some supplements apparently work for some people and if they do, more power to them. FWIW, when I asked my urologist about supplements, he wouldn't talk about them and claimed he could lose his license if he did.

Thank you Lee. I think I read that when I was looking it up. It is good to know. They kind of side tract and say it work but who really knows. You don't know what is really in it. Take care My doctor does not talk about supplements. He only tells me If you want to try it go ahead but be careful.... Ken

That's the same position my doctor took. He wouldn't discuss them but essentially said it's your body, you can do what you want. Given the lack of rigorous clinical trial data on supplements and the fact that they are unregulated, I view that as the responsible position. And if one is on other medication, there's no way to know if a supplement will interact with it.
