Nausea.....

hi everyone.....I've been doing fairly well tapering (thank God considering all the new things I've got goin on!)
Anyway, I was at 8.5mg for about 3 weeks and doing well.
about 3-4 days ago, I went down to 7.5mg and man what a difference! not with joints, but SO much nausea!!
Last night I was literally throwing up every 45m or so.
haven't done so today, but I'm SO sick to my stomach.
has anyone else had this problem or any suggestions?
could sure use the advise.
all this trying to move to Texas, and the new med problems that have crept up....I don't need this right now! thx Lynda

Hi Lynda,
For myself I would never lower the dose when I have big things happening. I hope you feel better soon

Hi Lynda, it happened to me when I lowered from 8 to 7 1/2. I was nauseated and felt sick. The reduction did not go well. I am STILL on 8 and afraid to lower and have the same experience.
Maybe lowering 1 mg might be too much when you are below 10 mg. Lowering 1/2 mg might work better. Worth a try.

hi I am going to try to get to 7.5 pred but been hanging of for the reasons you are going through

It could be coincidence - having PMR and being on pred doesn't excuse you from other illnesses. If it continues do check with your doctor. And it will be interesting to see if it happens with your next reduction. Some people do find it hard to adjust to the next dose and nausea is one effect people have mentioned but it is quite unusual.

hello Lynda, ive been very slowly decreasing the pred by .5 . its possible the jump from 8.5 to 7.5 is too much.
the good folks on this forum have stressed we shouldn't try to reduce too quickly. Its a very slow journey, i know!
I'm at the point of taking a quarter of 1mg!!! and my fingers are crossed that my rhyumy was wrong when she told me two and a half years ago that i might never get off Pred!!! thanks to EileenH who wrote and asked if she " had a crystal ball", that gave me hope that maybe my rhyumy just might be wrong. i would be so happy to prove her wrong, but I'm not betting on it!
Good luck with everything Lynda

Hi Lynda, (ex-california girl 😃 )
Maybe you can try to go back to 8.5 for a few days and see if nausea goes away and then taper down in smaller increments ( 0.5mg) instead of full 1 mg.

I have discovered I am vulnerable to sickness bugs since Pred, especially catching them from grandchildren. The advice given was to increase dosage by .5mgs for two to three days when the nausea stopped, then go back to the usual dosage. When not on Pred the adrenals produce more cortisone to help fight infection - in creasing Pred performs the same function. Hope this helps and the best of luck lovely Lynda 😃

I personally tried to go down a full mg. once and in 2 days I could hardly walk & was in agony with my shoulders ,wrists, hips, pelvis,& sides of legs. I would never go down a full mg. again. I go down 1/4 at a time & give my body time to adjust to a lower dose slowly . Your body tells you loud & clear when you went down too fast ,even if your symptoms are different from mine. Best wishes & try 1/4 tapering at a time.

Your post has just scared the bejeebers out of me Lynda. I do hope nausea has nothing to do with tapering. I was so pleased with myself as I was just starting to drop down to 5mg. Then Sat night I had a horrible nauseous bout , unbearable chest pains in the heart area, and I had to have my first ambulance ride. A heart attack was eventually ruled out, but no cause for the over the top, gut reaction was discovered, or the chest pains. I am going to push for further tests to find out what may be wrong as I do not want to go through that again. I would never have associated my problem with the pred drop though. It does sound rare and could be purely coincidental. I certainly hope it has nothing to do with nausea or I will be a nervous wreck every time I decrease.
Unfortunately I can feel my PMR flaring up after the event. That is why I actually came on here today, to remind myself what to do in a flare up. Any quick hints would be appreciated. Should I rest or should I carry on ?

Dearest flutterbie.....I'm so glad you posted your concerns (and even more glad it wasn't a heart attack!
let me try to put your mind at rest.
yes, I've had horrible nausea for almost a week.....I mean REALLY bad!
and it's possible that some of it may have had to do with tapering down.
But for the record, this has probably been one of the most stressful years (especially month) of my life.
I'm in the process of moving to Texas to live close to my youngest daughter and my 2 grandsons.
I was born and raised in California, so this is a BIG deal!
But truth be told, it's LONG overdue. I should have done it years ago.
without going into too much info, my oldest daughter (whom I've supported for 20yrs), has a terrible drug problem. it's not constant, but often enough to make my life miserable. lol....she's supposed to be my caretaker.....what a joke.
Anyway, the last year my health has really spiraled down, to the point I'm facing a bone marrow biopsy to see if I've got leukemia/lymphoma.
I'm scared to death.
The point I'm trying to make is that it wouldn't surprise me one bit if a large chunk of my health problems are stress related.
And so my final "preaching" to you will be......take. deep breath and try like hell to surround yourself with good, loving, caring things and people!
HUGS AND LOVE TO YOU!

Thank you so much for that lovely reply to me and I do hope all goes well for you on your new journey. It sounds like a grand new adventure ahead of you, once you are resettled, and I do hope all goes smoothly for you with the move. Take care of yourself now and enjoy those two grandsons and your daughter. Thankyou. Big hugs to you too.

You might find this interesting in that case - there it crept up on the patient but for you it may have been the sudden change in dose, albeit small, caused the whole system to rock enough to cause the symptoms:
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17111738
And it is also possible that that drop has taken you to a level that isn't quite enough to manage the inflammation. If it were me I'd go back to the last dose and leave the drop for a few weeks, then try again. Do you drop in one go or use something like the DSNS approach and just challenge your body with the new lower dose one day at a time at first?
