Nausea After THP

Hi everyone, I'm having my 2nd hip replacement next week and I only have one major concern.  I was extremely nauseous after surgery and this continued for the next week.  I've been told it could have been the anesthetic (I had a spinal but was completely asleep through the surgery), or the pain meds.  I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue and if they've found any resolution.  I've seen so many people talk about drinking and eating after the surgery.  They wouldn't even let me have tea with milk in it for the 3 days I was in hospital.  I was so annoyedexclaim cryThanks in advance!

I was the same, with my first hip replacement, already knew that morphine for me was a NO NO, but they knew better, I had told them that morphine made me vomit constantly while I was on it, having had it previously.

2nd hip in pre-op I was told they would not be giving me morphine due to sickness problem, instead they gave me fentanol, worked wonders, just like morphine for pain relief, but no vomiting.

Othe than that they can give you maxalon, that stops you vomiting on morphine, but told it was tooo old fashioned, WHAT, if it works why would it matter.

Thank you Lyn.  I'm going to run those ideas past my surgeon as well.  I really hope he listens to me!  I have no idea why it would matter if it works!  My guy seems to be a little old fashioned so maybe he'll go for it!

Hi fiona....I didn't have a spinal I had general anesthesia and didn't have any nausea. Just wanted to ask what day is your surgery? Also to wish you luck. I am not sure how much I will be on. Having my surgery on Friday. Many blessings and hope you feel better soon...Hugs....Barb

Hi Barb.  I'm a week behind you.  Unfortunately I haven't come out of a general anesthetic very well in my past.  My blood pressure drops and I turn into quite the mess so I probably should avoid if possible.  It's so interesting how each of us is so different.

I will be thinking about you and hoping you have a great outcome!  Make sure you let us know how you're doing.

      Hugs to you!  Fiona

I will fiona, and the same for you keep us all posted. Yes, know what you mean about blood pressure dropping. Mine did also, and in fact still havent' been on all of my BP meds since that surgery. They can't do a spinal on me though because of multi-level spinal stenosis.....so I have no choice....wishing you well.....quite a few of us going in for our second hip the next week or so....Hang in there.....Barb

I was nauseous twice after my bilateral knee replacement last year but I think it was from the pain meds rather than from the epidural I had. And I gained 10 pounds in 3 days in the hospital but it was surely from the IV's because I didn't eat much. My sodium level crashed so they pumped me full if IV's.  Next month I'm having a hip replacement but my same surgeon is saying I must have general anesthesia for this. Not sure why he is pushing for general for the hip when he pushed so strongly for the epidural for the knees?

That's interesting as my surgeon told me he'd have done whatever I wanted but said that he could tell in the recovery room who had what type of anesthetic.  He clearly favours the spinal.  I'd deffinitely ask why.

I've known my surgeon for years and we've always kidded around, but this conversation he was adamant with no discussion about it. The anesthesiologist is part of his permanent surgical team so I'm not sure how much I'll be able to push or probe him. I'm wondering if I had bad shakes from the epidural like I had from the spinal for my c-section? Or would the Propofol sedative have prevented the shakes? I have a colonoscopy this week so maybe I'll ask this anesthesiologist a lot of questions...

Hi Fiona -- I had lots of nausea in the hospital on the first two days -- I went home on the third day and was fine.  I just threw up everything I ate multiple times......even when I didn't eat!  But it didn't last long.....by the time I was home, I was fine.  Good luck with it!  (P.S.  I tried to think of it more as a weight loss plan so it didn't bother me so much!)

Thanks Leslie!  I would have loved it if the weight had stayed off but unfortunately I must have made up for lost time!  If it happens again will try harder this time.

The food was awful at the hospital and I ate little. I am without appetite and very nauseated since leaving hospital yesterday, two days after hip replacement. My husband suggests that I am ketotic from not having enough sugar. Took Zofran s few minutes ago. On Colace as early as two days before surgery but no results yet. Stopped pain meds almost 23 hours ago. Doing well otherwise. Any hints?
