Nausea, anxiety or IBS???

Hi guys, not sure if anyone has experienced anything like this before. basically approx 6 years ago, i started very randomly with nausea quite constant and gurgling tummy etc. What followed was lots of tests and things to try that i thought would help such as: stool tests for inflammation, h-pylori, blood tests, endoscopy, colonoscopy, hida scan, lactose free diet, gluten free diet, fodmap diet, peppermint, ginger, anti nausea tablets from the doctor. nothing worked. the gastro discharged me with a diagnosis of ongoing IBS which i've had for approx 12 years anyway. I got depressed from feeling poorly all the time, so i was put on antidepressants, within weeks my nausea had gone. So me and my partner thought, it must have been anxiety? eventhough at the time, i didnt feel particularly anxious i dont think?! anyway, it didnt come back until i had a short break from AD's a few years back, so i went back on the AD's and it stopped again. Now i've been off my AD's for 8 weeks and its returned again.

Anyone else suffered similar? Obviously i'm massively swaying to it being anxiety related due to the relief the antidepressants give me from it. I completely stumbled across the 'cure' by accident due to feeling depressed and needing antidepressants all those years ago. very strange.

    Hi Jade

I will soon be speaking to my Dr about this exact issue.

I have noticed my IBS flares up at the most inconvenient times. at first I thought it was bad luck but I realised recently that it was me being anxious that was causing it. I could calm myself down if I concentrated hard enough and the pains would go... at least temporarily.

My brother was the same. He was eventually put on anxiety meds. (similar to ADs) and it helped him a lot.

Yep it's so weird. It's like the antidepressants help settle my stomach and bowels in some way. But unfortunately the ORIGINAL ADs stopped working and then I couldn't find another that suited and eventually gave up and thought I'll tackle my anxiety without them now as I don't see antidepressants as a lifelong solution anyway but they seem to really help with my gut and nausea etc. I think it's a mix of anxiety and IBS. 😦

hi jade, i suffer from something called gastritis that can cause problems with pockets of acid in your stomach, this can cause nausea and occasionally food to hit the back of your throat. i take no antidepressants and refuse to. i take nothing but gaviscon. just gaviscon, it stops the acid causing the burning and puts a lining on your stomach so the acid stops the burning. try asking about this or another ant-acid - there's lots of them available and they stop your stomach hurting. try it? tell me how you get on?

Hi Sam thanks for your comment. It's not gastritis as I've had endoscopy and biopsies etc. Tried gaviscon and PPIs. It's something to do with the link between the antidepressants and the gut feelings. As the gut feelings always go when I'm on antidepressants but come back when I'm not. It leads me to believe that the antidepressants are calming my ibs or calming my anxiety which in turn sorts out my gut issues. So I was wondering if anyone else had the same with the antidepressants basically. Just hoping I don't have to go back onto the antidepressants to feel relief from my gut issues.

i wish you luck jade, i have lots of illnesses and doctors have tried for years to put me on antidepressants without success. i tried them years ago and vowed never again! that's it. i walk, try rescue remedy oils, CBT, mental health charities etc but NOT antidepressants. have you tried any mental health support ? if they're decent enough they'll try to get to the bottom of the anxiety and work out how to manage it, it maybe worth a shot i wish you luck.

Hi Sam, thank you. I'm currently having online CBT via the NHS. I'm not allowed face to face as im not priority. I also do meditation daily and eat well etc. I'm going to start exercising again also. x
