Navicular Pain

Hi Everyone,

This is the first time I have ever written on a forum.

I had a hairline fracture on my navicular bone when I was 19 years old, I am now 28, almost 29 years old.

I have experienced an ache/pain for around 3 years now but most recently I struggle every day, especially first thing in the morning. I get the most awful ache/deep pain right where I broke it. It feels like a bone pain (if that makes sense). Around 3 years ago I decided to take up kickboxing after being attacked one day on the way home from work. I used to go at least twice a week and managed to get to black belt, as you can appreciate this meant that I was kicking pads/people with force. I also took up running; I don’t experience pain whilst running very often it’s usually the next morning when I can’t walk on that foot properly for a few minutes.

I was sent to have an x-ray last week. I could hear the radiologist questioning my x-ray in the background with another member of staff. This resulted in her having to call and forward my x-ray onto a more experienced radiologist (This obviously freaked me out).

After all that it came back that I had a large amount of calcium growth on my old fracture which is what could be seen, and that she asked for a second opinion in case there was a new fracture. I had a look at my x-ray ad was shocked to see a bright white uneven line right across my navicular bone. They basically told me that I have disturbed my old fracture and that there wasn’t anything that could be done to help me.

This is extremely disheartening for me and I dread to think what the pain will be like I the future if I’m limping like an OAP every morning already. I will have to see my GP anyway with the results from the x-ray, should I try push to see a specialist or does the sound like the dreaded Arthur (arthritis)?

Would love a more positive answer

Thank you for taking the time to read my essay!

Aimeé

      I wish I could!

I don't have the X-Ray's but they will be sent to my GP so maybe I could ask for them then?

      Hello,

But I am so happy that I was right and that it wasn't just arthritis. The orthopaedic said I may never have even broken my foot all those years ago as the line is where the bones are fusing.

I'm scared after hearing about the surgery and the risks, but I can't see how the insole will stop the pain.

Hi I had navicular cuneiform arthrodesis (foot fusion) surgery 18 months ago after years with orthopaedic surgeon. I have had numerous insoles both bespoke and off the shelf with no benefit. I have had electro conductivity test, steroid injections, MRI scans all to no avail. My surgeon always used to say he preferred the needle to the knife and I'm back to see him tomorrow and things are little better for me. It struck a chord your comment on first thing in the morning and I actually have more pain sitting/lying down. I also had tendons shortened during the same operation and was due to have same procedure on my other foot but have refused because it has not been very successful. If you need any advice or questions please ask if have been through this process now for over 4 years
