Hi all I have been suffering night and day with RLS and have tried allsorts so i can try and get a night sleep and now i have turned to drink just to give myself some sleep instead of staying a awake all night.

I recently seen my gp who is trying to help me but now i have 2 problems instead of one problem Drink and Rls.

I have tried to exsplain to the job center how it affects me but they either dont care or dont understand what i am going thru so i just wonder if its  worth it anymore, if it wasnt for my wife and son i would of sorted it out a long time ago but now i feel i have to suffer for the rest of my life with Depression lack of sleep and lack of concerntration and not knowing what the future is going to be.

There are several things you can do and most of them quite lo tec and simple.

The first ; get up , jump in the shower and stand there for 5mins.

Taking a bath will bring the same results but your'll need to sit in it while it drains out completely .

Secondly; keep whole meal bread or Biuscuits in the house ( stop eating denatured white bread) when you feel this sensation starting within the legs eat a slice or try a Biuscuits or two and return to sleep.

if your interested I can explain why RLS is caused and one or two alternatives to the ones above depending on your sex male / female.

I'd stay away from anything that contains gluten (wheat, barley rye) or avenin (oats).

An obvious temptation for an escape from RLS, but one which in the long term will increase your problems. I've recently watched a viable, beautiful young woman die of alcohol poisoning. I over-indulge sometimes, in desperation for sleep, so feel for you.

Sorry you have also Job Centre probs. These minor civil servants are soul-destroying.

I feel for you. RLS must be what bad guys get in the afterlife---we don't deserve it!

Hi Copystuff, I think everyone who has this disease has been where you are at one point. I know standing up at night and leaning against a chair so you won't fall because you are so tired isn't fun and not where you need to be.  For me, I found a psychiatrist who worked  with movement disorders. At the time I was taking Requip, Gabapentin, klonapin and still didn't sleep at night. My Dr. said some ofthe medications can affect people in the opposite way they are supposed to work. So, she has had me cut way down on the klonapin and added a low dosage of Trazadone. And this seems to be helping. I am averaging 5 hours at night. Also the had me eliminate the requip in the morning and I am doing better. BUT, I absolutely must take the requip at the designated time or it is 2 hours of misery before it works.

I really think a specialist in movement disorders could help you. they are hard to find but worth the effort. Hang in there and know that with enought research you will find what you need.

I have suffered with RLS for as long as I can remember, even as a child.  Finally my Doctor put me on Ativan, Lorazapam is the generic.  He told me that it was an old drug.  It works and it's fast acting.  I take it when Im preparing for bed and that's it.  Also, I've tried Requip, It makes me vomit about 20 minutes after I take it EVERYTIME.  NO matter how small a dose I take.

If I'm out of Lorazapam.  I end up in the hot tub reading most of the night.  Also, if you think your restless legs are being cause by a med you've taken, Take some Benadryl, because what you are having is an alergic reaction.. and Benadryl will help.

Try 2 dihydrocodeine about half an hour before your symptoms normally start. My doctor gives them to me on prescription. After an operation I noticed that as soon as I came off painkillers, my RLS started up again. Good luck don't give up.

I used to suffer from rls occasionally from the age of 8, but it disappeared at the age of 16. When i was 49 it re-appeared after I took Maxolon for the side effects of another drug that I was taking at the time. This time it diidn`t disappear. Long after I stopped taking the Maxolon,I`m still being tormented on a regular basis by rls. Only my left leg is usually affected. I don`t want to take medication for it because the side effects are as bad if not worse than rls. I find tonic water helps, but Iv`e read that taking it regularly is bad for you because of the quinine. I`m at a loss as to what to do next.

Hi,I have been drinking tonic water for almost a year every night when I go to bed I drink it.I use to be on Sifrol pills, and I am off it now...the quinine in the Schweppes tonic water is very little and its safe to drink, even my hubby drinks it due to his leg cramps.I also discovered Bragg mother ACV... I take 2 TBS  of ACV and one TBS of Organic blackstrap molasses ,at night when I go to bed...both Tonic and the ACV helps me ,sometimes I drink the ACV or the tonic all depends on my mood...I must say I sleep right through the night and no more pills for me lol you know what if you feel your legs are restless you can also rub the ACV on ...well all these remedies works for me ,hopefully it will work for you ,I am very happy with my RLLegs ...devolve the molasses in Luke warm water, then add the ACV and fill the glass with water....everything if the best hope it will help you too.....🙏🏻

Hello. I have had restless legs for for about 30 years.   It recenly got so bad at night it was in my arms, legs, head, and bowels. Then at xmas caught adenovirus, attacked everything plus bowels and left me with ibs. went to doc who put me on fodmap diet. Best thing that ever happened!. diet depleted all bacteria in gut including bad, which left me feeling rough for couple of weeks. started taking kambucha, and milk kefir, to top up on good bacteria whilst continuing fodmap. free from rls for first time in a long time. RLS can come and go which would suggest ibs bad gut bacteria  or bacteria imbalance is  involved in RLS. Plan on trying water kefir and sauerkraut. Hope this helps.

2 most effective things for me, soaking in a hot bath and using a bean bag as follows:  I make my bean bags with flannel and the removable washable cover with fleece.  8 inches by 20 inches, fill with approximately 6 cups of winter red hard wheat berries (so when laying flat about 1 inch high).  Heat in microwave for 2-3 minutes, take out and move around to mix wheat berries, and heat another 2-3 minutes.  Lie in bed face down with rear end up (looking cute:-), and bag at back of knees, between both legs, touching thighs and calfs.  Instant relief.  The wheat berries will stay warm for up to 30 minutes. Adjust legs to what is comfortable over time.
