necrosis of hip from

after having both hips replaced in sept and nov 2012, i still have soreness, pain in hip area; but the question i had if anyone out there had this experience... the dr's said i had avascular necrosis; i thought i had pulled a groin muscle from pulling out a heavy dresser; before that was getting steroid shots in my bursa both hips and remember the dr. (who no longer is with my medical institution) who first gave me the shots, because of constant pain in the bursas, after injecting me put all his weight on his hands and pushed down on my hips one at a time; at the time i thought 'WHAT ON EARTH IS HE DOING"...but kept my mouth shut because i didn't want to anger him and figured he knew what he was doing; but i wonder to this day if he didn't start the fracture on both hips from doing this because the doctors do not know what caused both my hip bones to develop necrosis

I used to work on the science side of implants but read quite a bit of the medical literature and I can't remember a post-op avascular necrosis although quite a few replacements because of avascular necrosis in the head of the femur, usually due to a fracture in the neck of the femur some months or even years before.

I had my first hip replaced March 2012 and it has taken nearly 2 years to reach some normality The scar/side of the thigh is still tender but the hip is functional. I await replacement of the other hip but will change the surgeon and surgery technique to try and shorten recovery time. Recovery time seems to vary according length and nature of incision, the age of the recipient etc. Initial recovery is more rapid and then slows down leaving one to wonder whether normality will ever be achieved.

Very unusual to have this in both hips simultaneously, as it is usually a footballers injury (so usually one sided). I suspect with you it may have been just they way you were born and took this long for it to show up. I'm assuming that you had been suffering for some time pre surgery with hip pain. As with many things your body has had to adjust both to the degeneration pre surgery and to the anatomical changes post surgery. The muscles around your hips must be exhausted!!! constantly trying to accomodate. My suggestion at this point would be to try some hands on therapies like massge therapy and deep tissue massage. I'll bet over the years you have lots of scar tissue in and around those hips. Deep tissue massage breaks that up (a liitle painful but worth it) and lets the blood circulate throughout. If tolerable, you might want to try some pilates or yoga to try to strenghten your weakened muslces around the hips. Do you have water aerobics where you live? That would also be beneficial for strenghthening, but not irritating those hips. Good Luck!!
