Need a lot of help!! FODMAP, mucus and going multiple times
Posted , 3 users are following.
So currently my ibs is quite bad. Most days at school my stomach hurts and I spend hours on the toilet going multiple times because of broken up stools and lots of mucus.
I'm currently trying a low FODMAP diet and my stomach has stopped hurting as much during the day. My doctor have also given me macilax to help with broken up stools however after a day of taking them I've just had diarrhoea.
So is there any recommendations you have to stop going multiple times and having broken up stools plus is there any way to stop the mucus. I'm also under weight and need help with the low FODMAP diet and gaining weight but I don't want to eat bad foods to gain weight. My age is 15.
Thanks for reading I really appreciate help as ibs is really difficult for me to handle especially with the stress of school.

Are you getting help with the FODMAP diet Has your doctor put you in touch with a dietician? The dietician should be able to say that they have experience with the diet.
This must be a huge problem at school.
How is your weight? How tall are you and how heavy?
Do you cook your own meals?
Has the doctor done a whole lot of tests and found no cause for your stomach problems? IBS is what's left after they have eliminated everything they have a test for.
Keep a food diary and make sure you write down everything you eat or drink.
Have you checked out the FODMAP web sites?
I look forward to hearing from you so keep in touch

It is an enormous problem at school and it makes things very difficult to handle but I'm trying my best.
My height is about 170cm and my weight is normally around 7 stone 11 ish or 48-50 kg.
I don't cook my own meals my parents do that because I don't really get the time to.
I have had a stool sample tested and nothing was found and I had a blood test and nothing major popped up either. Don't judge me but a few months ago I got into the addiction of wiping inside my anus and I have slight OCD and GAD which in reviving cognative behavioural therapy. I could try to stop doing it but I can't because of the fact that the stools are getting broken up and get stuck which annoys me. The paediatrician I saw said it was ibs and the wiping was all psychological and his advice was to just stop wiping but currently because of the stools getting stuck I can't really do that in fear of then leaking out or something.
I am keeping a food diary that I can use to track what I eat but it also tracks my bowel movements and any symptoms as well as medicines I take but I haven't been tracking what I drink.
I have checked a lot of FODMAP websites and have an idea of what to and what not to eat. I also have a FODMAP app on my phone.
Thanks for any help I really appreciate it

Can you ask your doctor again for expert help from a dietician. I am on the FODMAP diet for restless legs and it took about 10 or 12 weeks on the exclusion diet before I really benefitted so hang in there. Other lucky people find relief from day one.
I have found it is so touchy that a small amount of some things sets it off. I was feeling pretty good so I rewarded myself with some milk chocolate. The RLS crept back and it took me a while to realise that the chocky was enought to upset me.
There is a good report on a website which I will put in a separate post. (If a post contains a website the patient, com moderator needs to check it out to be sure its not offensive or advertising so it is a little delayed)
Push your doctor to recomend a dietician or perhaps ask your local council. In Australia some councils have free dieticians but I don't know where you are?
See the next post for a url.

I don't know whether to stop taking the macilax because that's what's causing the diarrhoea but the doctor gave me it to help stop going multiple times because of broken up stools. It hasn't actually helped with that yet and I'm supposed to take them for at least a week so I don't know what to do.
Thanks for the help!

I am not a medical expert so I would have to say stick with your doctor's advice, particularly if he said it might take some time to work. Of course if something gets worse then you have to check with the doc to see what to do.
When is your next appointment?
Do your parents have a list of everything you are allowed to eat on the FODMAP diet?
There are some specialist clinics in the UK. I had a list. I'll see if I can find them.
Good Luck

My parents don't have a list on what I can eat but I do and my mum ordered food last night which has just arrived and I made sure it was food I could eat.
Because of the medicine I had to have a day off school today which I really can't afford to keep doing and the medicine is only making me worse so I think I might stop taking it. He said that I'm supposed to take it for about 7 days and I've been taking it for 3. He said that if I get diarrhoea then reduce the dose but I did that and it didn't help. I think I'm going to stop just to make sure I'm ok for school but I'm going to ring the doctor and take to him about it. I'm off school for Easter next week and won't be going back for two weeks so I could potentially try the medicine again then when it won't affect school.
I would really appreciate it if you could find that list it would be a great help to me.
Thanks

I rang the London Bridge hospital who I think are experts in FODMAP diets.
THey repied
Hi Graham
Unfortunately the hospital does not allow children under 16
You could try the Evelina Hospital for Children?
Perhaps give them a ring today and ask what they can do r suggest for you. You might not be close enough to them but they should know about other clinics and hopefully one of these will be suitable.
Tell us what happens,
Cheers
Graham
