I have been dealing with these bartholin cyst for the past three years and I'm tired. My recent one was on the 29th of July and I now have a word catheter in for drainage. I'm seriousl considering talking to my doctor about just taking the whole gland out but I have two major concerns. One is the blood lost and two is the the down time. I need some advice..have doctor's appointment on the 18th.

    Hi zena,

First of all, I hope your doing ok 😊 I was the same as you after two years I was at my wits end. I'm now four days into having my bartholins drained and the marsupialization done and I have never felt better. I don't know much about the whole gland removal, that was a option I was looking at but I had been begging my doctors for two years to have the op done.

At 33w pregnant they flared up again to the size of a golf ball making it impossible for me to do anything. I had to call a ambulance and was taken to hospital where the surgeon decided enough was enough.

After the op, which only took about 20-30mins I felt immediately relaxed. Throughout the night as the aenesethsia wore off I noticed I had no pain.

I'm now four days out of hospital and I have never felt better. The hideous lumps have gone, I have a little bit of tenderness but overall the pain is completely gone and I'm looking forward to continuing my life without having to worry about this ever again, hopefully. 😊

Before going something as drastic as a gland removal talk to you doctor about the marsupialization first. I went through hell trying to convince doctors and gynos I needed this but I finally got a good surgeon who saw how much pain I was in and fixed it..

Good luck with it, I hope they do something for you.

Hi JettaBugs thanks for the advice. I have had eight cyst/abcess and eight surgeries in a three years time and I have had the marsupislization, two of them and a incision and nothing seems to work, I think I'm just ready for this to be over for good..any advice.

Wow after all that, I understand why you want the gland removal now. I can't offer any advise on that subject but I'm sure there are people here who have had it done and had great success. Don't give up. But if you feel it's the only option left, keep pushing for it. The doctors don't understand the pain your going through.

Hello, I had my right Bartholin gland removed one month ago.  Because a urogynecologist did the surgery, I had no complications.  I too was very worried about blood loss, but I had little.  I wanted to heal quickly and well, so I gave myself a week of not doing much, then I gradually added activity.  I didn't have to take any prescription painkiller after the first day and then was fine taking ibuprofen.  You should have a good result if you go to urogynecologist or a doctor who specializes in "female pelvic medicine."  Many gynecologists do not know how to do this procedure.  I consulted with 5 doctors and my gynecologist was adamant about not getting it done.  I insisted on getting it done because I am 50 and was concerned about cancer.  Please do your research and get various opinions.  Consult with board certified urogynecologists or female pelvic medicine specialists.  It's a minor procedure but it is technically challenging.
